THE TAKE

Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow hosts its first game of the season on Wednesday when Aris TT Bank comes to the Russian capital. Both teams started their season's on the right foot last week as CSKA scored a 64-74 win at Eldo Napoli and Aris topped Fenerbahce Ulker 66-58. CSKA has virtually the same squad as last season, and it has showed as the players clicked against Napoli. Trajan Langdon led four players in double figures in points with 22, while Final Four MVP Theo Papaloukas added 14. Aris returned to the Euroleague after a long absence with a convincing win. Mike Wilkinson led the way with 16, Jeremiah Massey came up big inside with 13 rebounds and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf marked his Euroleague debut with 11 points in 19 minutes. But starting shooting guard Alex Scales, who scored 14, was injured and will miss this week's game. Neither Scales nor injured center Giannis Giannoulis travelled to Moscow. CSKA has its own injury problems, too, as center Thomas Van den Spiegel will not be able to help his team in this game. Scales' absence leaves a hole in the visitors' backcourt, which Abdul-Rauf will try to fill. CSKA's depth at guard will allow it to attack Abdul-Rauf, who may not be in full game shape yet, leaving swingman Spiros Panteliadis to step in. Point guard Terrel Castle and Georgios Kalaitzis will also need to step up. CSKA's J.R. Holden, David Vanterpool and Papaloukas are a balanced trio, with young Anton Ponkrashov waiting for his chance on the bench. CSKA also has a size advantage inside, where it has two players who are 2.12 meters or taller – David Andersen and Aleksey Savrasenko. Kevin Fletcher at 2.06m is Aris's tallest senior player and he saw less than five minutes on the floor last week. Wilkinson and Massey will need to be at their toughest to keep Aris on the boards against a bigger side. CSKA has won six straight Euroleague games at home since it fell to another Greek club, Panathinaikos, in January. It won't be easy for a short-handed Aris squad to walk into Moscow and win, but with veterans like Giorgios Sigalas and Kalaitzis, Aris won't go down without a fight.

Quotes Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"It will certainly be an interesting game, especially with Aris coming off a victory over Fenerbace. For sure they will get 100 percent effort from their talent. They don't like to speed up the game, so we must be ready to play in the half court. Because of that, we'll have to rebound and defend well in order to create fastbreak opportunities. Last year we lost our first home game of the Euroleague season, so we know it won't be easy and that we have to be ready."
MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"Undoubtedly, it's the most difficult task on the road in the regular season. CSKA Moscow is the current Euroleague champion, having participated in four Final Fours in a row and having beat an NBA team in the preseason. Their roster contains incredible players like Papaloukas, Holden, Langdon and Andersen under the instructions of the Italian teacher Ettore Messina. Even if we had no absences, this game would be extremely difficult for us. Gioannis Giannoulis underwent a knee surgery and will be sidelined more than a month and Alex Scales will miss the game in Moscow. Moreover, Kalaitzis and Castle have minor injuries but I hope they can help us. I really believe in my team, working together to improve ourselves, and we will all travel to Russia with no fear. I am sure that my team will learn a lot of things through this game against CSKA."

Players

PAPALOUKAS, THEODOROS
CSKA Moscow
"Aris is a good team for us to open at home against. We're a better team, but we'll have to go out on the floor and prove that. They are going to come in here looking for a win. We should win the game, but we need to stay focused and concentrate on playing well. We lost our Euroleague home opener last year, but I don't expect to repeat that this year. We've played a lot more games together and have much more experience since then."
ABDUL-RAUF, MAHMOUD
Aris TT Bank
"Nobody would fly to Moscow unless we believed that we were able to beat CSKA on the road. The most important thing is how we play in the whole game and give our energy on the court. I am used to being concerned only with our improvement and getting rid of any thoughts of the potential of the opponent. CSKA Moscow is an incredible team. They can run and shoot the ball very quickly through a well-known player like J.R Holden but I think that their main concern is to focus on the defense. I wish we had all our guys healthy, but everything is possible in basketball."
Matjaz Smodis - CSKA Moscow Euroleague defending champion CSKA dominated its first home game of the season as it held off visiting Aris TT Bank 83-68 in Group C on Wednesday. CSKA improved to 2-0 in the group standings while Aris dropped to 1-1. It was the first official game between two historic European clubs since 1989. CSKA started the evening by honoring retired captain Sergei Panov in a pre-game ceremony. He retired over the summer after helping CSKA win its first Euroleague title in 35 years as well as 12 Russian League titles. His former teammate Matjaz Smodis led the winners with 19 points, including 12 in a first quarter that gave the champs early leads. Theodoros Papaloukas and J.R. Holden each had 13 points for CSKA. Papaloukas shot 6 for 6 and dished 6 assists, while Holden made the key shot as Aris tried to rally late. Mike Wilkinson and Savas Iliadis each had 14 points for Aris.

Aris opted to use a small starting five with Giorgos Sigalas at power forward guarding Smodis. David Vanterpool opened the scoring with a left-handed driving layup, but a free throw by Wilkinson and a long jumper by Iliadis gave Aris its first lead, 2-3. Smodis answered from downtown, but apart from him, both teams struggled to score at this point. Smodis scored around the basket, then Spyros Panteliadis made free throws to get Aris within 7-5. Vanterpool took over now with a triple from the right wing as CSKA ran its offense through Smodis. Serapinas hit a three-pointer in response for Aris, and Jeremiah Massey came off the bench to nail a two-pointer to keep Aris in the game at 12-10. CSKA went right baack to Smodis, who followed a triple with a long jumper, but Iliadis got back two baskets for Aris. Holden did the same in penetration, however, to give CSKA a 21-14 edge. Wilkinson and a red-hot Smodis exchanged shots, and even after Iliadis found a driving layup, Holden beat the buzzer with a fastbreak basket for a 25-18 CSKA lead after 10 minutes.

Savas Iliadis - Aris TT BankPapaloukas beat the Aris zone defense with a three-pointer to give CSKA its first double-digit lead, 28-18, to open the second quarter. Massey answered around the basket but Holden hit one from downtown coming off a screen and Papaloukas followed with an acrobatic layup for a 33-20 CSKA margin. Aris called timeout to fix its offense and Iliadis returned to nail a long jumper to which Terrell Castle added an off-balance three-point play, pulling the guests within 35-25. CSKA struck back, however, as Langdon hit a free throw and Smodis added a jump hook to keep CSKA ahead, 38-25. Aleksey Savrasenko stepped up with consecutive baskets that stopped Aris's comeback attempts. Papaloukas shined with a driving layup and then fed Anton Ponkrashov for a fastbreak basket, good for a 17-point CSKA lead at 46-29. Sigalas fired in a three-pointer, which highlighted a 0-5 Aris run, but Ponkrashov scored again to preserve a 48-34 CSKA edge at the half.

Sigalas banked in a three-pointer right after the break but CSKA kept rolling anyway. Vanterpool was all over on defense, making back-to-back steals as Smodis scored in the low post and Holden on a fastbreak to make it 52-37. Wilkinson hit a jump hook that Vanterpool matched with a layup. Aris struggled against CSKA's trademark man-to-man defense, which didn't allow any open shots and forced the guests into long possessions. Meanwhile, Holden fed Smodis for a a fastbreak dunk, good for a 56-39 CSKA lead. Wilkinson tried to change things with a baseline jumper but he didn't find much help. Ponkrashov hit 4 straight free throws and Papaloukas added consecutive fastbreak layups, forcing an Aris timeout at 64-46. Kevin Fletcher buried one from downtown but Savrasenko and Ponkrashov answered for a 67-49 CSKA margin after 30 minutes.

Wilkinson tried to ignite an Aris comeback with free throws, but CSKA kept dominating the game with outstanding defense. Meanwhile, Papaloukas fed David Andersen for consecutive power layups, the second coming with an additional free throw. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf hit a jumper for Aris, but Andrei Vorontsevich shined with a layup-plus-free throw to make it a 20-point game, 75-55. Aris finally improved its offense, as Iliadis stepped up with a three-point play, Abdul-Rauf added one from downtown and Castle hit free throws to get guests as close as 75-63 midway through the final period. After a CSKA timeout, Wilkinson put back an offensive rebound and Abdul-Rauf bombed from downtown to cap a 1-13 run that pulled Aris within 8 points, 76-68, with 2:30 to go. Then, however, Holden buried a fallaway jumper off an inbounds play while Papaloukas drove off a pick-and-roll for a basket. Aris did not recover after that, and CSKA sealed its first home win of the season.

MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"We had good minutes and bad minutes. I was pleased with some players, like Iliadis. CSKA is a team that we can learn from. It is a teamthat went to three straight Euroleague finals before winning, because it had patience. Despite the loss, I feel proud. I belive that with a complete roster we can advance."

Players

SAVRASENKO, ALEKSEY
CSKA Moscow
"We really wanted to come out tonight and show our home fans a good game. We came out and executed what our coach had instructed us to do, and that was to shut them down on defense. The game got close in the fourth quarter, but we never lost control. I got to meet the Aris big men tonight for the first time on the court, which was interesting, because I had only seen them on tape."
VANTERPOOL, DAVID
CSKA Moscow
"They played a tough game and showed us that we have to play hard for 40 minutes. They managed to cut the lead to 10 points in the fourth quarter. You really have to give them credit for how they fought. We lost our first Euroleague home game last season, and that's something we talked about before the game. We didn't want a repeat of that."
SERAPINAS, SIMONAS
Aris TT Bank
"This game is a good roadmark for us. It's the second game that we've made this effort and lost. We faced perhaps the best team in Europe and it was a good chance to test ourselves. But we're left with a bitter feeling, because we know we can do more."
SIGALAS, GIORGOS
Aris TT Bank
"Call me crazy, but I think we could have won this game. We'll need to study the video, see our mistakes and learn from them."
