THE TAKE

Two teams seemingly headed in opposite directions square off on Wednesday in Group A as Tau Ceramica hosts Climamio Bologna at Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria, Spain. Tau (3-1) has won three straight games since starting the season with an opening night defeat at Olympiacos and is always a favorite at home, where it boasts a 19-game winning streak. Climamio (0-4), on the other hand, has seen its worst start in over a decade prompt a coaching change. Ergin Ataman took over for Fabrizio Frates following last week's 86-90 home loss to RheinEnergie Cologne, which left Climamio as the Euroleague's only winless team. The game marks the third straight season that these two teams have met, with the home team having won each game until now. All-Euroleague power forward Luis Scola caused Climamio headaches last season with his play in the paint, averaging 16.5 points and 6 rebounds in 30 minutes. James Thomas will have the responsibility of containing Tau's low-post threats, which also include Tiago Splitter and Mirza Teletovic. Climamio's biggest problem has been at point guard, where starter Tyus Edney has been out with an injury. Steffen Hamann (3.7 apg.) has taken over, but he'll have a tough job on both ends of the floor this week against Tau's deep guard rotation, which features Igor Rakocevic (15.5 ppg.), Pabli Prigioni (4.2 apg., 2.5 spg.) and Serkan Erdogan. Further complicating matters is the fact that Climamio ace Marco Belinelli (10.5 ppg.), who has been fighting through injuries himself, will have to battle Tau's Fred House (9.5 ppg., 6 rpg., 3 spg.), one of the top perimeter defenders in the league. Climamio will look to get points from its forwards, Preston Shumpert (15 ppg.) and David Bluthenthal (16.2 ppg.), who scored a career-high 29 last week. Shumpert could also see defensive duty on Zoran Planinic (13.2 ppg., 5.7 apg.), who's quickly becoming a player to fear in the Tau attack. Tau is always the favorite at home, but coach Velimir Perasovic must be wary of the talented Climamio lineup, which could give that extra 10% that makes the difference under its new coach.

Quotes Head Coaches

PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Tau Ceramica
"I think we have kept improving since we lost to Seville in our domestic competition. We improved our deffensive effort and we found the style we were looking for. We will face a team composed of great players. They changed coaches recently, and I think that they will give an answer much better than many people expect from them. They are good team that faces one of the last opportunities to avoid an early elimination. They built a team with big names - Bluthenthal, Edney, Shumpert, Mancinelli, Belinelli - so they count on a lot of good players who only had a bad start. The new coach is well-known in European competitions and has plenty experience, so I think their game will improve for sure. If we relax and think that Climamio is not a dangerous contender, we will get hit hard. I hope we all agree that they are a good team. Maybe we could get an advantage because of our inside players, but we must prove it on court."
ATAMAN, ERGIN

"The game against Tau Vitoria will be the first for me on the Fortitudo bench. But it will be important particularly for the players. I just had two practice with the team and it takes a little bit longer to assemble a new chemistry. My teams always played with control on on offense and focus on defense. As I always say, defense starts from a balanced offense. In the games of Climamio so far, I saw too many forced shot, not much ball circulation – and that’s not the way I like. We need points inside the key and the guards driving to the rim. Anyway, we will fly to Vitoria to play at our maximum."

"I think things are fine now, our team is going well. We won two important games last week against Efes Pilsen in the Euroleague and against Akasvayu Girona in Spain. We have two games this week that could look easier than the last ones we had, but we don't think it's going to be an easy task. We prepared this game in the same way as we did before Efes Pilsen. Climamio didn't start good, they are going through problems lately, but that doesn't mean they don't have good players. They are a team with good players that are not playing good at the moment, but they changed coaches and they can explode at any moment. I hope it won't happen in our game."
THOMAS, JAMES
Climamio Bologna
"Euroleague basketball is tough. It is the first time for me and I’m getting experience game after game. I understood that you can lose against anybody and you have to play strong every night. We definitely want to start winning. I can’t really explain why we started 0-4. I am sure we are a good team. Now we have a new head coach, we’ll see if it will be different. My teammates know Tau Ceramica more than I do, but I know they are a strong team that is doing great in the Spanish League, too. It will be difficult but we want to give it a try."
Pablo Prigioni - Tau Ceramica Tau Ceramica moved into a tie for first place in Group A with a 90-80 win over Climamio Bologna on Wednesday night at Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria, Spain. Tau won its fourth straight game to improve to 4-1, joining Olympiacos, which fell at Efes Pilsen earlier in the evening. Climamio, playing for the first time under new coach Ergin Ataman, remained the lone winless team in the competition. Luis Scola led Tau with a season-high 26 points, while Pablo Prigioni had 15 points and 7 assists, Serkan Erdogan and Igor Rakocevic scored 13 each and Tiago Splitter finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. David Bluthenthal led Climamio with 24 points and 8 boards, Preston Shumpert added 14, Marco Belinelli 13 and James Thomas had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Climamio kept it close for much of the first half, but Prigioni and Splitter combined for all the points during a 14-5 run that extended Tau's lead 46-30 at halftime. The hosts then remained in control throughout the second half as the lead reached 20 points until Climamio closed the gap in the closing minutes.

Both teams started out cold, playing slow basketball with Thomas the only player to score in the first four minutes of the game. The Climamio center hit a free throw and later threw down a power dunk to give Climamio an early 0-3 lead. Tau continued to miss-fire, allowing Bluthenthal to increase the margin to 0-5 with a bank shot. The hosts' drought came to an end as Scola took the court midway through the first quarter. The star power forward scored on his first attempt and more points were on the way. With Scola on the floor, the hosts started running and Climamio started shaking. Rakocevic followed a three-pointer with a pair of free throws to give Tau its first lead at 11-9. Erdogan kept Tau rocking and increased the margin to 16-11 with 5 points in a row to close the first period.

David Bluthenthal - Climamio BolognaTau remained hot in the beginning of the second quarter, as Prigioni sent an amazing assist to Scola from out of bounds and followed that with another dish to Erdogan for a fastbreak triple. Even though Ataman tried slowing Tau down with a quick timeout, things didn't change a lot for the visitors, despite of a couple of three-pointers by Shumpert and Steffen Hamman. Climamio's soft defense allowed Tau to keep a comfortable margin from that point on, even though the hosts weren't focused on deffense either. Climamio remained within striking distance thanks to it's rebounding power until Prigioni and Splitter combined for all the points during a 14-5 run that extended Tau's lead 46-30 at halftime.

Things dind't change after intermission, as Climamio's shooting woes continued, especially for Belinelli, who headed the bench after 24 minutes having made just 2-of-8 field goals. Tau was able to keep building its cushion and the first 20-point lead came thanks to fastbreak layup by Zoran Planinic in the middle of the period. Climamio reacted towards the end of the quarter, with Shumpert, Thomas and Bluthenthal getting the visitors within 61-48. But Climamio's hopes soon vanished after Rakocevic and Erdogan came through with a pair of three point plays to reach the end of the period with a comfortable 68-50 lead.

Back-to-back Bluthenthal triples from the same spot gave the visitors new life and reduced the gap again to 69-56 early in the period. Climamio stayed close for a few minutes, but Tau soon raised the difference to 19 points again after several Climamio turnovers. The next few minutes served only for the fans' enjoyment, as it was already clear which team was going to be the winner. As such, the defenses relaxed a bit more as all players tried to give the crowd some plays to remember. That kind of non-pressure basketball benefited Climamio, which managed to save some face in the last few minutes and return to Bologna with a less painful 10-point defeat.

Head Coaches

PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Tau Ceramica
“We won this game, but I don't feel as happy as I was after the last ones we played here. We didn't play good deffense, although Climamio managed to score only 11 points in the opening period. We improved a bit in the second one, but we kept committing the same mistakes during the second half, and that's why I cannot be happy as a coach tonight. Sometimes players' legs don't work as expected, they try because they want, but I think today the reasons were that they couldn't. Maybe we lacked better concentration. If we play so cold in the beginning abroad, we will fall behind by 30 points for sure.”
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Climamio Bologna
“I think Tau played much better than us. We have different problems. It was not easy for our players tonight because the team changed coaches recently and I only had one practice with them. Now we need to change the philosophy of the team. This kind of a game was especially difficult for us, as our starting point guard is injured and our backups are still too young to play games at this level. We had a big problem trying to control the pace of the game and to set our offense, because Tau pressed the ball very hard all game. They didn't let our players make our offense. Eighteen turnovers are too many and I think it was the key of the game. That's why Tau won the game very easy.”

Players

SPLITTER, TIAGO
Tau Ceramica
“We started not so good on deffense, as we did in the last games. They started missing a lot of shots too, so we only needed to improve our offense step by step to take a lead and increase it later. We tried to keep a comfortable margin after that, but they managed to score more in the last quarter and put us in trouble. Fortunately, it was no time for the comeback. We struggled a bit because they played with four perimeter players, so we tried to take advantage of that on offense and play smart in deffense. I know it's quite difficult to win every game, so we only focus on the next one.”
MANCINELLI, STEFANO
Climamio Bologna
“It was hard game here tonight, but I think it's ok for us. We lost only by 10 points, which I think is good in our situation. Now the team must think about winning our next game in domestic competition to start improving. Our next game in the Euroleague is against Efes Pilsen and we'll try to get our first win of this season. Although we are with zero wins so far, five teams go to the next round and some of them are only two games ahead, so I think everything is still open and that we will have chances to qualify for Top 16.”
