THE TAKE

A pair of Group A teams on different tracks so far meet up in Dusseldorf, Germany on Wednesday when RheinEnergie takes on Olympiacos. Group A co-leader Olympiacos (5-1) hopes to get another victory to keep fighting with Tau Ceramica for the first place. Meanwhile, RheinEnergie (2-4) needs to win at home rather desperately, as five of its last seven games after Wednesday will come on the road. Olympiacos is the best rebounding team in the competition (39.1 rpg.) and ranks second in scoring (89.7 ppg.), while RheinEnergie has the best two-point shooting percentage (60%) but also the worst steal-per-turnover ratio so far. Above all, RheinEnergie will try to slow the Reds' electric backcourt duo, Scoonie Penn (13.2 ppg., 3.5 apg.) and Alex Acker (16 ppg., 8 rpg.), the only player to rank among the Euroleague's top 10 players in both points and rebounds so far. Penn will test his skills against Demond Mallet (10 ppg.), while Acker will try to stop Marcus Faison (17.5 ppg.), the fourth top scorer in the competition even when he comes off the RheinEnergie bench. Sharp shooter Henry Domercant (15.2 ppg.), forward Panos Vasilopoulos (6.7 ppg.) and backup guard Manolis Papamakarios (3 ppg.) round out a solid Olympiacos backcourt that will be without veteran point man Damir Mulaomerovic (2.5 ppg.), who stayed back in Athens with an injury. RheinEnergie will look to guard Mlajden Sljivancanin (2.8 ppg.) and do-it-all forward Immanuel McElroy (8.3 ppg.), who will try to stop Acker in this game. The battle in the paint will be equally important, even when Sofoklis Schortsianitis is once again doubtful for this game. Andrija Zizic (17.7 ppg., 68% FG) has been playing the best basketball of his career lately, while Giannis Bouroussis (2.8 ppg.) has seen his playing time extended with Baby Shaq sidelined. Zizic will go against center Marcin Gortat (10.3 ppg.), while Bouroussis and Ryan Stack (5.8 ppg.) will have to take care of rebounding ace Ronnie Burrell (11.7 ppg., 6.3 rpg.). Expect nothing but an exciting game in which the team that dominates the tempo and plays its brand of basketball will have the most chances to win.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"I wouldn’t say Olympiacos is the best team in our group. But they are definitely one the favorites. Every player on their team has the ability to change the outcome of a game. The main thing for us will be slowing down the rhythm of the game, because they are a very good running team with good shooters. If we start running up and down with them, we have no chance. Coach Gershon has put his stamp on this team, like he did with Maccabi before. I have a lot of respect for him: he is a living legend and one of the best coaches ever. I remember one statement he made to me during my last season as a player, when he jokingly said something like: 'Sasa, stop playing already, I need some more rival coaches. It's starting to get boring winning all the time'."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"Before the Greek League game against Olympiada Patras, I said that there are no easy games, and I was right. We needed to sweat to accomplish that win. On Wednesday we need to sweat even more if we want to smile again. For us, it will be very important to see our fans in Germany, since their voices give us extra power and we need it especially in the road games. RheinEnergie is a Euroleague newcomer and a win over Olympiacos would be great success for them. It is obvious that they will try to establish their game and choose a slow tempo, but we showed at Patra that we can win these games as well. Nevertheless, it will be better if we manage to establish our own tempo."

Players

MALLET, DEMOND
RheinEnergie
"These guys on Olympiacos have big names in Europe. They are very good players - but so am I. I feel that we can play with them, and me personally, I’m looking forward to going against guys like Scoonie Penn or Alex Acker. They have a lot of experience, and their coach has obviously won titles in this league before. After our loss to Le Mans, I would say we’re down, but we’re not out. We lost to a very, very beatable team, and I didn’t particularly shoot very well, with shots going in-and-out. It happens, I’m human, I’m no machine. But I’ll bounce back. We just have to get our wins against other teams now."
BOUROUSIS, IOANNIS
Olympiacos
"We don't know many things about RheinEnergie: just what we saw on video. What we know is that we have a better team, but if we don't compete with a clear mind and concentration in Germany, we can pay for it dearly. We want our sixth win in the Euroleague, but at the same time we are looking for a good performance, which has been missing lately. As for myself, I do nothing more than the coach is asking from me. Whether I play two minutes or more, what I am trying to do is help my team and give my best effort."
James Penn and Pini Gershon - Olympiacos Olympiacos Piraeus retained its share of the Group A lead with an 81-88 win over RheinEnergie Cologne on Wednesday night in Dusseldorf, Germany. Scoonie Penn led the Reds with 22 points and 6 assists as Olympiacos improved to 6-1, the same record as Tau Ceramica, which topped Le Mans 76-79. The two sides meet next week in Vitoria, Spain in a clash for first place. Meanwhile, RheinEnergie dropped to 2-5 and needs a comeback in the second half of the regular season to become the second German team to advance to the Top 16. Alex Acker, Andrija Zizic and Ioannis Bourousis scored 16 each for Olympiacos. Marcin Gortat led RheinEnergie with 17 points and 3 blocked shots, Mladjen Sljivancanin added 15 and Ronnie Burrell 13 for the hosts, who outrebounded the Reds by 33-24. Olympiacos led almost all the way and kept a 74-84 lead with 2 minutes to go. RheinEnergie used a 7-0 run to get within 81-84 in the final seconds, but Henry Domercant and Penn sealed the win from the free-throw line.

The game got off to an offensive slug fest. It was the Penn and Zizic show for Olympiacos early on, as the big man scored 10 straight points after Penn had opened with a runner in the lane. Cologne got 5 quick points from Janar Talts, after Immanuel McElroy hit a layup for the first basket of the game. Two free throws by Penn were followed by a three from Marcus Faison to tie it at 14-14. Penn found Bourousis for an open look from the three-point line, as the first Piraeus player not named either Penn or Zizic scored. Cologne could not miss from outside, as Burrell and Gortat hit mid-range jumpers and Faison, Demond Mallet and guard Sljivancanin hit threes. But Olympiacos kept up the pace with 4 points each from Acker and Penn. Panagiotis Vasiloupos ended the opening period with a triple that made it 29-32.

Marcin Gortat - RheinEnergieAfter Mallet drilled a three pointer to even the score at 32-32 at the start of the second quarter, both teams cooled down from the field. With the defenses tightening up, most of the scoring came at the free throw line: RheinEnergie scored 10 points at the line, but would not make a field goal until the final minute of the quarter when Sljivancanin fired in a three. Piraeus went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe and got two baskets inside from Bourousis, the last one giving Olympiacos a 45-51 lead in the final minute of the quarter. But with the clock running out, Nadjfeji found McElroy under the basket for a layup and the halftime score of 47-51.

Olympiacos started to pull away at the start of the third quarter, as a Bourousis layup and a Zizic jumper sparked a 6-0 spurt that gave the Reds a 10-point lead. Penn had all the answers for the visitors, as he twice restored a double-digit advantage after RheinEnergie showed signs of coming back. After a McElroy layup, Mallet drilled a three as Cologne got within 58-63, but this time Domercant answered with a slam and back-to-back Nikos Barlos baskets upped the lead to 11. Burrell scored three the hard way, but Domercant's triple ended the third quarter with Piraeus on top 61-72.

Burrell tried to ignit RheinEnergie's comeback with a jumper, but a red-hot Penn stepped up with back-to-back layups, which made it a 12-point game. Even though Sljivancanin fired one in from downtown, it would be the game's only points in more than 2 minutes. Acker nailed a jumper to increase the Reds' margin to 67-78 midway through the final period. Free throws by Gortat and a layup from Nadjfeji gave RheinEnergie some hope at 71-78. Acker came through again with a layup, but more foul shots by Gortat and Faison got the hosts within 74-80 with 2 minutes to go. Olympiacos did not lose control, however, as Zizic made free throws and the ever-present Acker added another basket. Even with that, Sljvancanin and Burrell fueled a 7-0 RheinEnergie run, which Nadjfeji capped with a layup, to get the hosts within 81-84 with 16 seconds to go. However Domercant and Penn hit the key free throws, which allowed the Reds leave Germany with yet another road win.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"Even though we lost, I am kind of satisfied with the outcome. This was one of our better games in the Euroleague. Our turnovers cost us, you can’t lose the ball that often if you expect to beat Olympiakos. There still are a lot of games to be played, but with so many away games ahead of us, it will be hard to advance to the next round. But after the way we played tonight, I feel very confident in my players."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"Even though I never think that we might lose before a game, I knew Cologne was a good team with very coachable players. I knew the game would have a high score, because they shoot a high percentage from the field. At halftime, I told my players I might have made a mistake: I had told them not to foul, to make sure they only get one foul per quarter. Due to that, we didn’t play aggressively. In the second half, we played better defense, because we had more aggression."

Players

GORTAT, MARCIN
RheinEnergie
"At the beginning of the game, everybody was hot from the field. We very motivated, we really wanted to win this game, and after our win in our domestic league, we had a lot of confidence. Olympiakos is a very experienced team, and that is exactly what has been our biggest weakness so far in this league: experience. We only have one guy on the team who played at this level before in Demon Mallet. The rest of us, we are a young team. So we got really close to winning, took a wrong shot in a critical situation, and they went on a run to win the game."
ACKER, ALEX
Olympiacos
"We expected this game to go down to the wire. Cologne played their hearts out. It was the first time for us that we saw this team, I was especially impressed with Marcus Faison. The game was close at the half, and coach told us in the locker room: Jump them before they can jump you! So we did. In the fourth quarter, I felt my team needed me to step up, and I did. I always say, the fourth quarter is MY quarter."
