THE TAKE

First place in Group C will be on the line Thursday when AXA FC Barcelona hosts defending Euroleague champion Panathinaikos at the Palau Blaugrana. Panathinaikos enters the game atop the group standings and tied for the best record in the league at 9-1, but Barcelona has just one win less. Accordingly, a win by more than 10 points can propel Barcelona over the Greens into the top spot in the group. That’s because Panathinaikos defeated Barcelona 76-66 behind another brilliant all-around performance from last season’s Final Four MVP, Dimitris Diamantidis, who came through with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocked shots. The game is a homecoming of sorts for another of Panathinaikos star guards, Sarunas Jasikevicius, who spent three seasons with Barcelona and still owns a home there. Saras, a crowd favorite at Barca back in the day, helped the club lift the 2003 Euroleague title as well as two Spanish championships and two King’s Cups during his stay. Panathinaikos big man Andrija Zizic has also played for Barca. The game features two of the deepest and most talented backcourts in the Euroleague today. Jaka Lakovic, himself a former Panathinaikos player, leads an impressive cast for the home team that includes Pepe Sanchez, Gianluca Basile and even swingman Alex Acker, who started at shooting guard last week as forward Ersan Ilyasova cracked the starting five. Diamantidis and Saras are joined by Sani Becirovic and Vassilis Spanoulis. One of the only weaknesses that Barcelona can try to exploit is Panathinaikos’s weak rebounding. The Greek champs are last in the leaue on the offensive glass and second bottom overall. The Barcelona froncourt, with the Euroleague’s all-time No. 2 rebounder, Denis Marconato, plus Mario Kasun at center and Fran Vazquez and Jordi Trias at power forward, has the depth to battle guys like Mike Batiste, Andrija Zizic, Kostas Tsartsaris and Demos Dikoudis on the glass. Small forward Kennedy Winston is typically an X-factor for Panathinaikos due to his athleticism, but that could be canceled out by Acker. Barcelona is perfect at home this season and has pocketed six straight Euroleague wins since losing to the Greens, but it is hard to even consider someone else to be the favorite against Panathinaikos. That alone makes this a thriller from the very start, which is likely to come down to the closing minutes. Although Saras may not guard Lakovic, look to those two to play the critical roles if the game does stay close. Whichever player can lift his team higher, whether by scoring, creating for others or simply via leadership and motivation, should also celebrate the win after 40 minutes.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
AXA FC Barcelona
"We know for sure that Panathinaikos is one of the best teams in the Euroleague. They have a lot of quality players and are able to beat anyone, anywhere. Their corps of outside players is simply wonderful and they can win any match by themselves. They are a team that always plays with offense in mind. They have an outstanding ball rotation and are always looking for an extra pass. But we are undefeated at home this season and we want to keep that streak."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"We are facing a very serious team and the game is really important for both Barcelona and Panathinaikos. They have high quality at all five positions and they play very well, especially on their home court. I expect from my players to play concentrated and to be very aggressive in defense. During our preparation, we had to overcome some obstacles, but I am sure that my players will be ready to fight to win one more Euroleague battle."

Players

KASUN, MARIO
AXA FC Barcelona
"We need to win this match if we want to get the first spot in our group. Back in Athens, we had an option to win the game, but we lacked some kind of will. We don't want this to happen again. I'm sure we will beat them with the help of our fans. Panathinaikos is a team that is very difficult to play against, because they play with four perimeter players and only one in the paint. Moreover, their outside players like to play in the low post, especially Diamantidis. We need to play hard on defense and not allow them to play their game."
DIAMANTIDIS, DIMITRIS
Panathinaikos
"Barcelona is a very good team and with no doubt the game is expected to be very tough. The fact that they haven't lost at home in the Euroleague or the ACB gives us motivation to compete with all our strength and try to win over there. We want to beat all the teams at home or on the road and that keeps us focused in the practices. The first place of our group is definitely important for us, while we expect to play even better in the future. We know our weaknesses and we are trying to reduce them in order to be more competitive and get closer to our goals."
Kostas Tsartsaris - Panathinaikos Panathinaikos took a major step to become the Group C champion by edging AXA FC Barcelona 55-56 in Spain on Thursday. Panathinaikos leads Group C with the best record in the entire competition, 10-1. Meanwhile, Barcelona ties with archrivals Real Madrid for the second place at 8-3. Madrid hosts Barcelona next week in a highly-anticipated showdown. Kostas Tsartsaris paced the winners with 20 points on 5-for-9 three-pointers and 8 rebounds, but Vassilis Spanoulis became the game hero with the go-ahead three-pointer with 31.8 seconds remaining. Roger Grimau had 17 points on 6-for-7 two-pointers and 7 rebounds for Barcelona, that used a 14-0 run to get its only double-digit margin, 29-18, late in the second quarter. Dimitris Diamantidis brought Panathinaikos within 31-23 at halftime, while Demos Dikoudis and Nikos Hatzivrettas stroke from downtown in a 0-9 run that gave the Greens a 40-44 edge. It all came down to the final seconds, a Spanoulis gave Panathinaikos a 54-55 edge. Diamantidis made 1-for-2 free throws, but so did Grimau in the other end. Barcelona had a chance to win the game, but Jaka Lakovic and Gianluca Basile missed respective off-balanced shots in the final seconds.

Mario Kasun opened the scoring with a jump hook that Tsartsaris erased with free throws. Both teams tried man-to-man defense, with Diamantidis guarding Lakovic just as expected, while it was Basile who tried to do his best against Diamantidis. Lakovic banked in a three-pointer but Kennedy Winston scored in penetration to keep Panathinaikos within 5-4. The Greens dominated the defensive board but Kasun fed Fran Vazquez for a big dunk and intimidated Winston in the other end. Basile found his first points but Tsartsaris hit his trademark corner triple for a 9-7 Panathinaikos deficit. Vazquez scored again, as Barcelona tried to slow down the game tempo in the opening quarter. Basile found his first points but Panathinaikos kept running its offense through Tsartsaris, who fired in his second three-pointer to keep the Greens within 11-10. Diamantidis gave Panathinaikos its first lead, 11-12, but a layup by Kasun immediately put the hosts back ahead, 13-12. Tsartsaris followed a free throw with his third bomb from downtown to give Panathinaikos a 15-16 edge after 10 minutes.

Roger Grimau - AXA FC BarcelonaSarunas Jasikevicius, back in Palau Blaugrana for the first time in almost four years, fed Mike Batiste for a big dunk early in the second quarter, but Barcelona was about to regain its game momentum through an outstanding Grimau. Panathinaikos struggled to score against the hosts' well-adjusted defense, while Grimau provided a highlight with a fast break dunk and soon added a big basket in penetration for a 19-18 Barcelona lead. A turnover by Jasikevicius allowed Grimau to send the crowd to their feet with a layup-plus-foul. Panathinaikos went scoreless for 6 minutes, missing 11 consecutive shots and committing 3 turnovers in the process. Meanwhile, Marconato banked in a close jumper while Trias added a fast break dunk for a 26-18 Barcelona lead. Panathinaikos struggled at both ends now, while Lakovic fired in his second three-pointer to cap a game-changing 14-0 run, making coach Zeljko Obradovic call timeout at 29-18. Diamantidis stepped up with a much-needed three-pointer and soon scored in transition to bring Panathinaikos back to life, 29-23. An unstoppable Grimau beat the buzzer with another basket to give Barcelona a 31-23 halftime edge.

The Greens improved their defense after the break but its shooters - 4-for-23 two-pointers in the first half - remained off-target. Grimau kept pacing Barcelona with another basket but a running jumper by Jasikevicius and another three-pointer by Tsartsaris got Panathinaikos within 33-28. Basile quickly answered with a bomb from downtown but Spanoulis found his first points from the free throw line. Kasun beat the shot clock with a turnaround jumper but free throws by Jasikevicius and Spanoulis kept Panathinaikos close, 38-33. Barcelona kept dominating the defensive board but had troubles to score. Spanoulis stepped up with a fast break layup that Denis Marconato erased in the other end. Panathinaikos was a different team in defense now, while Dikoudis stroke from downtown to make Barcelona call timeout at 40-39. Batiste made free throws to complete the guests' comeback, 40-41. Hatzivrettas sank a wide open triple that capped a 0-9 Panathinaikos run and gave the Greens a 40-44 edge. Alex Acker made free throws while Basile beat the buzzer with a six-meter jumper for a 44-44 tie after 30 minutes.

Lakovic drew a foul and calmly made 3 free throws to restore a 47-44 Barcelona lead. Panathinaikos did not find the way to the basket for 3 long minutes, while Pepe Sanchez buried a six-meter jumper and Grimau beat the shot clock with a wild turnaround shot that capped an 11-0 run for a 51-44 Barcelona edge. Panathinaikos called timeout and Tsartsaris stepped up with a power layup to bring the Greens back to life. Hatzivrettas silenced the crowd with another bomb from downtown while Tsartsaris added a corner three-pointer - his fifth - to put Panathinaikos back ahead, 51-52. Grimau stepped up with a big triple for a 54-52 Barcelona lead with 3 minutes to go. Spanoulis missed around the basket but Marconato missed a wide open jumper in the other end. Diamantidis, Basile and Lakovic also missed respective shots but Spanoulis fired in a critical three-pointer with a 54-55 Panathinaikos edge with 31.8 seconds remaining. Grimau committed a turnover while Barcelona opted to foul on Diamantidis, who made 1-for-2 foul shots with 14.9 seconds to go. Grimau was next on the line, missing his second shot with 8.2 seconds to go. Diamantidis had a big block on Lakovic while Basile missed an off-balanced seven-meter bomb at the buzzer.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
AXA FC Barcelona
"It was an intense game with very good defense. We paid a high price for missing uncontested shots. The other key to this game was not being focused in the second quarter to get a bigger margin, as we missed too many shots and committed several turnovers. We lacked concentration in those minutes. I like the fact that if we meet Panathinaikos later on in the competition, we can beat them. It was a balanced game. We settled for outside shots throughout the game and committing turnovers in fast break situations did not help us at all. If we keep our intensity in defense, I have no doubt that we will also improve in offense."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"It was a tough game for us, but we had the luck to win the game. The perfect example is that Roger Grimau missed a free throw in the final seconds and they grabbed two offensive rebounds with two chances to win the game. Both teams played hard and I am proud of my team for this. Despite not playing well offensively, we stayed in the game and a great team that wants to win titles needs to be able to win this kind of games. We allowed Barcelona to get back in the game several times. First, we scored two points in eight minutes and then when we got a 40-44 lead, they returned to the game again. They have experienced players and for instance, Dimitris Diamantidis only hit 1-for-2 free throws in the final seconds. This can happen to any player, it also happened to Grimau."

Players

BASILE, GIANLUCA
AXA FC Barcelona
"Panathinaikos pulled down too many rebounds in the first half, while we did not managed to have patience in the entire game. We took too many quick shots and Panathinaikos waiing for the correct, key moment when Vassilis Spanoulis hit that go-ahead three-pointer. We did not managed to stay calmed in the key moments. We are at a good level and their experience paid off in the final minutes. That is what made the difference tonight."
JASIKEVICIUS, SARUNAS
Panathinaikos
"While all fans were giving me a big ovation I wasn't even able to think about the game. A good thing turned into a bad thing: I didn't play well. It all looked as if I was still wearing the Barcelona jersey. How could we win the game playing six against four? It was not the best game possible, considering the potential both teams have."
