THE TAKE

DKV Joventut hosts Cibona Zagreb on Thursday night in Badalona, Spain, in a matchup of Group B teams who could well prove to be fighting each other for position much later in the regular season. Joventut (2-3) returns home after back-to-back road losses, last week by 71-69 at Lottomatica Roma. Despite that close loss, Paco Vazquez was 6-for-7 from downtown to lead Joventut with a season-high 19 points. Cibona (3-2) beat up on Maccabi Tel Aviv 87-82 in a game that wasn't as close as the score would indicate. Brent Wright led Cibona with 22 points and 6 rebounds, while Chris Warren did not miss a shot on his way to 16 points. The game will be the first meeting between the clubs in more than a decade, after Badalona won five of their eight confrontations between 1991 and 1995. Joventut has been battling injury woes lately, but star Rudy Fernandez is back now and center Roberto Dueñas has had time to mix with the team, giving coach Aito García Reneses a near-full squad to work with, as only forward Lubos Barton (doubtful with a foot problem) and center Andy Betts (out with a knee injury) are not expected to play. In the meantime, Joventut has gained quality experience for its reserves, which could pay off down the stretch. Last week 34 of the team's 69 points came from reserves. Fernandez and playmaker Elmer Bennet are the team's top active scorers, averaging 10.5 points per game. Charles Gaines (8.2 ppg., 8.4 rpg.), tied for sixth in the league in rebounds, and Robert Archibald, who is effective when not in foul trouble, are the prime interior threats. Cibona is not only winless on the road this season, but has allowed the host teams to score 93.5 points per game. The Croatian champs nonetheless play aggressive defense, which has resulted in a league-high 27 fouls per game this season. They are also the league's best free-throw shooting team at 87.2%. Wright leads the team with 13.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, with Warren (12..6 ppg.) and Davor Kus (12 ppg.) the other scoring options. Center Luksa Andric has averaged 11.5 points on 78.6% shooting and 4 rebounds in 18 minutes over the past two games. Andric and point guard Jerry McCullough (10.8 ppg.) could play key roles as Cibona bids for a road win. Both players come off the bench and if they can bring game-changing energy with them to negate Joventut's strong substitutes, it will be a big boost for Cibona.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"I expect that we will play at a level that will give us a possibility of winning, because obviously our changes of qualifying for the next round depend on winning at home, and specifically games like this against Cibona, a team that I would like to say has interesting players. Their three American players are quite good, and then they have some typical players from such Balkan teams, all are tall and all know how to play well. Altogether, we're talking about a very good team against whom we'll have to play well in order to win. I hope that Rudy Fernandez and Robert Archibald keep on improving as they have lately, and the same with Roberto Dueñas, although in his case it's going a bit slower."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona
"I have seen many Joventut games this season and I can say that this is a team that plays, by far, the most aggressive and tough basketball in the Euroleague. It is especially obvious when they play on their home court. They have many players in the rotation and that is the way they maintain high pressure during all 40 minutes. Rudy Fernandez is back, and that is of course a big advantage for them because I think he will be better and better with time. The fact that they have brought Dueñas also speaks about their ambition in the Euroleague this year. I am looking forward to start the game, because it will show me how my team reacts to the toughest possible conditions."

Players

HUERTAS, MARCELINHO
DKV Joventut
"Cibona will be a difficult opponent. We have to win this game, since we now have a losing record, and if we want to go to the next phase, we have the obligation to win at home against all opponents. Cibona has beaten Unicaja and Maccabi, and right now have a better record than us, but we don't even consider the possibility of losing this game. Since they come from having beaten Maccabi in Zagreb, that tells you a lot about their quality, so we have to be ready and take advantage of playing at home."
BADER, MARTON
Cibona
"I played in Manresa last year against Joventut and they have back almost the same team this season, so I am sure that this is going to be one of the toughest away games we will face the whole season. They have 10 players who are capable of scoring 10 or more points, or of making the difference in the game. But if you want to go to Top 16, you have to keep winning at home and take a win or two on the road. This is the first of five more chances that we will have."
Charles Gaines - DKV Joventut The hot hand of Rudy Fernandez led DKV Joventut to an 83-73 home win over Cibona Zagreb in Group B on Thursday. Cibona was strong inside at the beginning, but when Martn Bader committed his third foul in the first period, things changed completely. Fernandez, who was doubtful before the game, drilled 4-of-7 triples and put Joventut ahead for good. The hosts improved to a 3-3 record in Group B, the same record as Cibona after the loss. Both share third place with Partizan. Fernandez led the hosts with a season-high 22 points, while Charles Gaines, Elmer Bennett and Robert Archibald added 12 each. Archibald also grabbed 8 rebounds. Brent Wright was stellar for Cibona with 20 points and 14 rebounds, Goran Vrbanc posted 15 on 4-of-7 threes, Davor Kus had 11 and Marton Bader added 10.

Wright and Bader scored on the offensive glass to give the visitors an early lead, which Bader stretched to 0-7 with a three-point play. Robert Archibald finally put an offensive rebound in himself in and Drew Sullivan posted a three-point play to get Joventut back into the game. Goran Vrbanc hit the first triple of the game and Davor Kus soon joined him as Cibona's offense found easy ways to score, even if the shots didn't always go in. Joventut broke the visitors' defense to make it 9-13. Bader became Cibona's main offensive weapon underneath as he Wright dominated the rebounds. Joventut made a double substitution, bringing in Rudy Fernandez and Dmitry Flis as coach Aito Garcia tried to stop the Zagreb avalanche. Fernandez started with two free throws as the hosts pulled within 13-15, but Bader was still strong in the paint and he drew a foul and added two free throws of his own. Fernandez fired in a three from the corner, and when Flis received the ball inside on the following play, Bader committed his third foul, going to the bench after that. Vrbanc nailed a three, but Fernandez finished an alley-oop from Linho Huertas for an 18-22 score after 10 minutes.

Vrbanc opened the second quarter with another three, but Joventut replied with a 7-0 run via seven free throws to tie the score at 25-25. A technical foul on Jamal McCullough allowed Joventut to jump ahead for the first time thanks to four free throws from Elmer Bennett and another from Sullivan, making it 11 straight free throws for the hosts and a 30-25 lead. Marijan Mance broke the spell for Cibona with a three, to which Charles Gaines replied with a three-point play. Bennett fed Sullivan for an alley-oop, but Kus went to the line for three free throws and a 35-33 Joventut edge. However, Fernandez was on fire, and he pulled the defensive rebound and finished on the other end with a triple to put Joventut up 6. The hosts' defense now found a way to stop Cibona, forcing the visitors to shoot at the end of the shot clock. With a couple of fastbreaks by Bennett and Huertas, Joventut forged a 43-34 lead and coasted to 45-36 at halftime.

Brent Wright - CibonaBennett opened the second half by giving Joventut its first double-digit lead, 47-36, but Kus hit a triple to get Cibona going. Fernandez scored as Joventut kept running, much to the despair of Cibona's defense. Wright succeeded in two open situations in the paint to pull Cibona to 56-51 after McCullough's layup. Gaines gave Joventut some air and Ricky Rubio stole the ball and fed it to Huertas as the hosts escaped again to 61-51. Wright was still the only solid option for Cibona on offense and soon Kus joined him from the charity line, but every time that the visitors got close, Fernandez was there with a three and Ferran Laviña added another one to close the third quarter with a 67-57 Joventut edge.

McCullough got Cibona going in the last period, but Fernandez blasted his fourth triple to make it 70-59. Both teams looked inside now to get points, as Wright made it 72-63, but Laviña was fed underneath by Robert Archibald to preserve the double-digit edge. Defenses forced turnovers on each side until Cibona got points from Vrbanc again on a triple to trim the deficit to 76-69. Two more free throws by Wright were matched by Fernandez's jumper to make it 79-71 with two minutes to go. Marin Rozic's unsportsmanlike foul after Rubio's steal allowed the kid to hit two free throws for a 10-point lead with a minute left. Cibona tried to stop the clock with fouls, but Bennett didn't miss, securing Joventut's third win of the season.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"This was an important game for us because it was vital for our aspirations in the league. I'd like to highlight our team spirit, which was probably the key to our win. I'm also glad with the good game of Robert Archibald, who is going back to his level after the injury. It was a tough and physical game, and I think we played at a good level but we not where I want yet."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona
"Congratulations to DKV Joventut. We controlled the game in the first quarter, but in the second we faced an aggressive team. We turned the ball over too much and they dominated the rebounds. When we managed to trail by 5 we already had many fouls on us and our mistakes in the end let the win slip."

Players

LAVIÑA, FERRAN
DKV Joventut
"It was possibly a not very fancy game but I think we solved it well. This win is great for our morale. We made little things that made us better and that helped us recover from a bad beginning. If we win in the end, that's what matters."
WRIGHT, BRENT
Cibona
"DKV Joventut managed to play its game, but we had options for the win until the last minutes. At that point, we turned the ball over too much and allowed too many rebounds. The fouls were also a factor which was not in our favor. You have to play well for 40 minutes if you want to win games."
