THE TAKE

One of the newest Euroleague teams will continue looking for its first-ever win in the competition when RheinEnergie hosts Tau Ceramica on Wednesday at 20:15 in Group A. RheinEnergie (0-2) has had a tough start to the season, registering back-to-back losses against Dynamo Moscow and Efes Pilsen. Meanwhile, Tau Ceramica (1-1) bounced back from its opening night road loss against Olympiacos with a big home win against Dynamo. Tau boasts one of the deepest frontcourts in the competition, highlighted by All-Euroleague first team member Luis Scola, who will play an extended role since Tiago Splitter is still sidelined with back problems. Rebounding ace Diego Fajardo, mobile center Kaya Peker and three-point threat Mirza Teletovic round out a battery of big men for Tau. They will have to slow down all-around threat Ronnie Burrell, who had 17 points against Efes Pilsen, while Guido Grunheid, shot-blocking specialist Alvin Jones and versatile forward Aleksandar Nadjfeji make up an interesting RheinEnergie frontcourt. Tau's defensive key may be stopping Demond Mallet, the heart and soul of the RheinEnergie attack, who is familiar with Tau after playing the team four times last season with GHP Bamberg – including a career-high 25 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting in January. Mallet will go against defensive ace Pablo Prigioni and Zoran Planinic, who is improving from game to game. A shootout is expected between Serkan Erdogan of Tau and Marcus Faison, who has averaged 16 points so far for RheinEnergie coming off the bench. Fred House could be Tau's x-factor, a versatile scorer who can also shut down any opponent on defense. He'll test his defensive skills this week against Faison. Tau will be without swingman Sergi Vidal, who will miss a month due to injury. Both teams will have studied each other well, especially since both coaches, Velimir Perasovic of Tau and Sasha Obradovic of RheinEnergie, faced each other many times as elite players at both club and national team levels. If Tau manages to control the tempo and force a fast-paced game, it will be tough on the hosts, even if RheinEnergie is as determined as ever to thank their fans with a big home win.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"We did a lot of good things against Efes. There are definetely improvements. We know who we have in front of us with Tau Ceramica: one of the best teams in Europe right now. You cannot prepare for one of their players more than another, because anyone on their roster can create problems against any team in Europe. They have players who can read situations very well. We have to get the maximum out of our potential, be aggressive defensively and on offense. We can't lose our heads, even when we're down. We have to be ready to handle pressure full-court and have a clear idea of what we want and who we want to attack."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Tau Ceramica
"RheinEnergie is a USA-flavoured team because they have four players from that country and also because of the other Eastern European players they have. I find them a team quite similar to Bamberg, who was our competitor last season. If you don't play a good game there, you can get a hard blow against this kind of team. We know this because we struggled a lot to win in Bamberg twice last season. There are always big surprises in this competition. We face a team that fights hard for the 40 minutes, that counts on very god athletes. There is a reason why they are the champions of Germany, but neither are favourites in this game, nor ae we going to roll over them. They play with fake power forwards, which gives them a lot of dynamism to their game and I think we must pay attention to this issue in order to avoid problems."

Players

GRUNHEID, GUIDO
RheinEnergie
"In this league, we expect to be the underdog against almost every opponent - and in Tau, we face one of the top teams in Europe. What can you say about a team like this? We have to be even more focused than usual to keep this game close. Everybody on their roster is dangerous. They have good ball movement, run short, crisp plays and have good interior players. With their experience, they flourish in the half-court game, so we would like to push the tempo a little bit, because the fastbreak is more of our game."
RAKOCEVIC, IGOR
Tau Ceramica
"I feel very comfortable this season, mainly because I have the most important thing: good health. I struggled a lot in Madrid last season because I had three muscular injuries in a row and I think that was the key to my average performance. I feel very comfortable in Vitoria, too. All players understand each other pretty well and we are working a lot and very hard. Thanks to this work, added to the quality this roster has, good results are coming early. With all players healthy and without inujries, I think there won't be many teams that can beat us. We cannot go to Cologne and think we will have an easy game. Every contender at this level can beat anyone. We must play at hundred percent there, because every team in the Euroleague, especially at home, is a dangerous one."
Zoran Planinic - Tau Ceramica Tau Ceramica gave a basketball clinic on the road Wednesday by rolling to a 70-102 blowout victory over RheinEnergie Cologne in Group A. Tau raised its record to 2-1 in the group while RheinEnergie is still searching for its first Euroleague victory. There was little doubt about the outcome after Luis Scola pushed the hosts ahead by 10 after one quarter and his teammates just kept adding to the lead. Scola led five Tau scorers in double digits with 21 points on 10-for-12 two-point shooting. Zoran Planinic added 18 and 6 assists, while Mirza Teletovic had 12 points, Igor Rakocevic 11 and Serkan Erdogan 10. Tau's pressure defense forced 23 turnovers from RheinEnergie and allowed only one home team player, Marcus Faison with 22 points, to reach double figures.

Tau took an early lead, with most of the points coming from the free-throw line. A Erdogan triple gave the visitors a 2-8 lead. But Cologne fought back with two free throws by Burrell and jump shots from Marcin Gortat and Demond Mallet. Ronnie Burrell missed twice inside for RheinEnergie, but got the ball back a third time to tie the score at 10-10. The teams began to trade baskets, as Gortat dunked following Planinic free throws, and Faison followed a Fred House three with a strong drive to the hoop for 2 points. Planinic made it 16-17 as the quarter drew to a close, and that's when Scola stepped up. The star forward scored 6 straight points, which were followed by a Teletovic three, while Cologne turned the ball over time and time again against Tau's full court pressure. After Faison fumbled a defensive rebound, Scola hit a layup to close out the quarter with Tau leading 18-28.

Marcin Gortat and Luis Scola - RheinEnergie, Tau CeramicaRheinEnergie opened the second quarter determined to go inside, as Aleksandar Nadjfeji and Alvin Jones provided the scoring. Jones scored dunked twice and Nadjfeji hit a floater and a hook, but Tau kept Cologne at bay with a three from Diego Fajardo and a nifty layup by Planinic. Tau's pressure defense continued to produce RheinEnergie turnovers, and on offense the visitors seemed to score at will. Erdogan hit a running layup, Pablo Prigioni stole the ball for an easy two and Planinic and Teletovic followed with three-pointers. Kaya Peker hit a hook shot and a free throw to make it 29-48. Another three by Teletovic and layups by Peker and Erdogan brought the Tau run to 20 unanswered points and ended the half at 29-55 for the visitors.

The third quarter saw RheinEnergie try to crawl back into the game. A few layups inside got RheinEnergie within 18 points, but Rakocevic drilled three straight three-pointers to squash the hosts' hopes. When Nadjfeji scored to get his team back within20 (49-68), Scola answered by scoring three times with an array of post moves to give Tau a 23-point edge after 30 minutes.

Tau started the final quarter with three-pointers by Erdogan and Rakocevic and a layup by Prigioni, finally putting the game out of reach. RheinEnergie never came closer than 26 points the rest of the way, as coach Sashs Obradovic gave his regulars a breather for much of the fourth quarter. After Planinic hit a jumper and Jesus Cilla hit a free throw, Gortat scored on a putback for RheinEnergie to end the game at 70-102.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"Playing against this opponent, it would be hard to say we played really bad. They made us look really bad. If there is one good thing to take from this analysis, it would be that we never give up. But you have to see, Tau has players that can solve any kind of problem. You need inside scoring, you give the ball to Scola. You need scoring from outside, Igor Rakocevic solves that problem, and so forth. Against this team, you can’t even make small mistakes in things, that we practise every day. But I can’t be mad at my team. The question is, what we take from losses like this. Because you can get better from games like these."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Tau Ceramica
"They have a much better team than they showed today. We got many easy points and had a lot of players who just had a good day. We have many good offensive players. I want our ideology to be that if you play good defense, you get to be on the court, And during our 0-20 run we played very good defense, which led to easy baskets. We were also better in the paint, where we didn’t let Cologne get as many offensive rebounds as in the first five minutes of the game. And that is a very important thing for us: we have to be tough in the paint."

Players

GRUNHEID, GUIDO
RheinEnergie
"Tau was just plain better than us. Losing by thirty points, you don’t really need to say anything more. We had the same problem as in our first two games: during one stretch in the second quarter, we lost concnetration, didn’t take care of the ball and turned the ball over. And our opponent just ran away with the game. It’s not so muchb that Tau was so much better than we are. The way we presented ourselves during that stretch, any team in this league would have had run against us."
PLANINIC, ZORAN
Tau Ceramica
"Cologne is a good team. We were especially worried about Faison. But we just played good defense and ran our offense very well, and we have very good individual players that can score against anyone. In the second period, we just played real serious, and that decided the game. Because to me, defense is key. If you play good defense, you’ll win the game, period."
