THE TAKE

Hemofarm Stada (3-1) will look to book its spot in the Eurocup Final Eight with a victory at Azovmash Mariupol (1-3) in the Last 16 Group K. Hemofarm can actually move to the Final Eight even with a loss, provided it loses by fewer than 10 points and Pamesa Valencia knocks off Crvena Zvezda in the other Group K game. Hemofarm was unstoppable on offense last week, hitting 66% from two-point range, 10 of 19 (53%) three-pointers as well as 19 of 23 (83%) free throws while also dishing out 20 assists. And the Serbian side played excellent defense, holding Crvena Zvezda to just 43% from near range and 2 of 12 (17%) three-pointers. Five players scored in double figures for Karadzic, led by guards Bojan Krstovic and Stefan Markovic each tallying 15 points. Two other players scored at least 8 points and forward Milivoje Bozovic had 11 points and a team-high 5 rebounds off the bench. Hemofarm won the first Last 16 encounter with Azovmash at home in Week 1, 84-74. The difference in the game came at the free-throw line where Hemofarm made 26 of 31 (84%) foul shots compared to 8 of 9 (89%) for Mariupol. Azovmash Mariupol comes into the game with its back against the wall with a 1-3 record after a 68-66 loss at Pamesa Valencia. Against Pamesa, Head coach Rimas Girskis's Azovmash held Valencia to 46% from two-point range while shooting 62% from near range. But the Ukrainian side made just 4 of 21 (19%) three-pointers. Forward Serhiy Lishchuk (17 points) and center Richard Guinn (14 points) were the only players in double figures, though forward Dijon Thompson had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. But playmaker Khalid El-Amin was held to just 7 points on 2 of 13 overall shooting. Unless El-Amin can bounce back, Azovmash will have little chance of advancing.

Quotes Head Coaches

KARADZIC, STEVAN
Hemofarm Stada
"Our loss by less than 10 points leads us to Turin but basketball is not soccer to keep the result playing catenaccio. We will try to win and I what I am expecting is that we will not be in a situation to try with adhoc decisions. Our position in the group lets us play without pressure. Azovmash is weaker than at the beginning of the Eurocup competition. But they accomodated to a new situation by beating Pamesa at home. They even missed a three-point winner in Valencia. The key for our success is to stop El-Amin. We can do that only with team defense."

"I expect a game similar to our first one in Vrsac. Uncertainly until the final second. One ball will decide the winner."
Khalid El-Amin - BC Azovmash MariupolAzovmash Mariupol did its best to stay alive in the race for the Eurocup Final Eight by using an 18-0 third quarter run for a 89-71 victory at home over Hemofarm Stada in Last 16 Group K. Azovmash staved off elimination - at least for the moment - as a loss would have sent Hemofarm to the Final Eight. Mariupol improved to 2-3 while Hemofarm dropped to 3-2. Hemofarm however will advance along with Pamesa Valencia if Pamesa win later Tuesday. Hemofarm started the game on a 2-11 run, but watched Azovash answer with a 15-6 surge. The guests took a lead again with a 2-11 second quarter push. But Hasan Rizvic and Khalid El-Amin combined to score 16 points in the decisive 18-0 run late in the third quarter to build a 12-point lead. Hemofarm would not get closer than 7 points the rest of the way. El-Amin, who was held to 7 points last week in a loss, bounced back big time with 30 points and 9 assists. Dijon Thompson tallied 17 points and 6 rebounds while Rizvic exploded for 16 points and 5 rebounds after having totaled 23 points in his previous six Eurocup games. Richard Guinn chipped in 7 points and 6 rebounds. Miljan Pavkovic drained 3 three-pointers in leading Hemofarm with 17 points and 6 assists. Milan Macvan had 16 points and 7 rebounds while Marton Bader and Bojan Krstovic both hit for 10 points in a losing effort.

Azovmash started off in poor fashion with just one score in its first six possessions, including three turnovers. Macvan scored the first 4 points of the game, Krstovic knocked down a three-ball and Nebojsa Joksimovic made it 2-11. El-Amin got his first score of the game and then Guinn and El-Amin hit back-to-back triples to knot the game at 17-17 and complete a 15-6 answer. Serhiy Lishchuk's only basket of the game gave Azovmash its first lead of the contest at 21-19. But Krstovic hit a three and converted the 4-play play for a 21-23 Hemofarm advantage after one period. Rizvic's dunk to start the second quarter was followed by two straight El-Amin baskets for a 27-23 Azovmash cushion. Two Macvan scores gave Hemofarm the lead back before Rizvic made it 32-29 with a foul host. But Bader completed a three-point play, Milivoje Bozovic had two baskets and Pavkovic drained a triple to complete a 2-11 surge for a 34-40 advantage. And the guests led 36-42 at intermission.

Milan Macvan - Hemofarm StadaPavkovic extended the lead to 36-44 and it was 40-46 after Boban Marjanovic's basket. But that's when Rizvic and El-Amin took over the game. Rizvic converted a three-point play and the playmaker hit back-to-back baskets, forcing a Hemofarm timeout with the score 47-46. Rizvic scored two more baskets and El-Amin made a score and 3 foul shots as the two combined for 16 points in an 18-0 Azovmash push for a 58-46 advantage. Stefan Markovic's layup snapped an 11-possession scoring drought for Hemofarm. And Mariupol's cushion was 60-48 after three periods. Two Rizvic free throws and Guinn's basket twice pushed the lead to 14 points before Pavkovic hit a three-ball, Bader converted a three-point play and Bozovic nailed a triple to bring the margin to 66-59. But El-Amin answered with a long ball of his own. Pavkovic and Macvan both hit triples as the lead was back down to 73-65. But Thompson scored three straight baskets and El-Amin and Rolandas Jarutis knocked down long balls as Azovmash pulled away.

Head Coaches

GIRSKIS, RIMAS
Azovmash Mariupol
"The first task for this game was to win. However, as soon as we started to lead, we used the chance to gain the point difference. Sergey Lishchuk played with an injury and it affected the condition of the team. In the second half, my players realized that we had to play without him and that gave us a 24-6 quarter. I liked the game tonight and am happy to still have the chance to enter the Final Eight."
KARADZIC, STEVAN
Hemofarm Stada
"I congratulate my colleague on the win. We played well in the first half, but relaxed and played uncertain in the second. We couldn’t hold back the pressure of Azovmash and lost the game."

Players

EL-AMIN, KHALID
Azovmash Mariupol
"It was a hard game. But we played with heart. We realized that we must win to keep our chances to advance to the Final Eight. We played with highest determination and we made it. We are looking forward to the next game in Serbia."
