THE TAKE

Air Avellino will finish its maiden Euroleague season on Thursday when it hosts Cibona in their Group A regular season finale. Avellino has no chance to reach the Top 16. Cibona has clinched fourth place in the group and will advance to the next stage. Head coach Zare Markovski’s Avellino will try to end the season on a high note after dropping five in a row, a streak that started with an 82-79 loss when it visited Cibona in November. Davor Kus paced Cibona in that game, while Chris Warren led Avellino with 20 against his former team. Despite Avellino’s losing run, the team has played well during the stretch – three of those losses came by 4 points or less on the road! Last week Avellino came up short despite scoring a season-high 88 points behind 19 from Travis Best. Meanwhile Cibona has also slipped lately, losing its last two games and head coach Velimir Perasovic’s men will want to pick up an important win before heading into the Top 16. Cibona is also trying to work two new players into the rotation – veteran center Bruno Sundov and swingman Alan Anderson, who debuted with 19 points in a 1-point loss at against Unicaja last week. Cibona’s strength is in the backcourt, where Earl Calloway, who has scored in double figures in eight straight games, Kus and Anderson will face Avellino’s Best, Warren and Drake Diener. There could be an interesting matchup at small forward, where the hosts’ Tamar Slay will have a height advantage over Anderson. In the paint, Sundov will team with Jared Homan, Niksa Prkacin and Luksa Andric against Avellino’s Eric Williams, Marko Tusek and Nikola Radulovic. In a game that is essentially for protocol only, Avellino may give reserves Daniele Cinciarini and Andrea Crosariol extended minutes, and Cibona could do the same with Robert Troha or Sundov. Either way, when the fourth quarter rolls around, both teams will give 100% to push for a win to end their recent slides.

GAME NOTES

Air Avellino
  • Forward Tamar Slay has also recorded at least 1 steal in every game this season.

  • Big man Nikola Radulovic was born in Zagreb and spent half a season playing for Cibona early in his career.
Cibona
  • Guard Earl Calloway has scored in double figures in eight straight games, averaging 15 points per game over that span.
  • Center Bruno Sundov made his first Euroleague appearance last week since the 2004 Euroleague title game, when he scored 4 points for Maccabi Tel Aviv as it was crowned champion.
  • Big man Jared Homan blocked a total of 8 shots in the first three games of the season, but has not blocked any in the past six games.

Quotes Head Coaches

MARKOVSKI, ZARE
Air Avellino
"I believe that a good team like Cibona will be motivated to win to have a good ranking at the end of this round. We must show that we are a good team under any circumstances we are a good team. It is time to play hard and win, because We want to finish our Euroleague season with a good result before we focus on our domestic competition. I hope that my players will step on court with high concentration."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"We still have some problems with injuries and it is almost certain that we are going to play without Vukusic in Avellino. The fact is that almost all of the Euroleague teams are stronger at home, so it will be really difficult to win although the game does not have great importance. Our ambition is to win because we want to start getting used to winning in away games, and try to lift our form for the second part of the season. I will not rest any players, because sometimes it has quite an opposite effect."

Players

PRKACIN, NIKOLA
Cibona
"We all know that this game won't move us up or down in the final regular season standings, but it's always nice to win on the road. That is our motive, and that is why we will try to do our best."
Drake Diener - Air AvellinoAir Avellino pleased its fans with a final Euroleague win in its final Euroleague game season by edging Cibona 81-75 at home in Group A on Thursday. Luksa Andric got Cibona going with free throws by Warren gave the hosts a 7-2 edge. Davor Kus shined with a driving layup while Calloway struck from downtown to tie the game, 7-7. Williams kept pacing Avellino but Prkacin provided a highlight with an alleyoop layup that Calloway followed with a fast break basket to restore a 11-14 Avellino lead. Slay sank free throws that Andric matched with a lightning quick fast break dunk. Avellino tried to speed up the game tempo without much success. Meanwhile, a final basket by Kus extended the guests' lead to 13-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Earl Calloway - CibonaAvellino tired to open the court with Drake Diener and Radulovic on court now. Meanwhile, Slay and Williams sank free throws to get the hosts within 17-18. Slay took over with an outstanding dunk in traffic. Anderson answered from downtown to restore a 19-21 Cibona edge. Diener scored coming off the baseline that Anderson erased with foul shots. Radulovic and Bruno Sundov traded three-pointers while a jumper by Williams tied it at 26-26. Calloway took over with a layup-plus-foul but free throws by Diener and a dunk by Warren restored a 30-29 Avellino edge. Robert Troha nailed a triple but back-to-back dunks by Warren and Diener provided another lead change, 34-32. Williams scored down low but a fast break dunk by Anderson kept Cibona within 36-34. Williams slammed it in the other end but a driving basket by an unstoppable Anderson got Cibona as close as 39-36. A driving layup by Diener fixed the halftime score at 41-36.

Free throws by Andric allowed Cibona to get within 41-38 right after the break. Avellino went scoreless for more than 2 minutes, as Cibona had adjusted its man-to-man defense. Meanwhile, Kus fired in a jumper while Prkacin banked in a close shot to put the guests back ahead, 41-42. Calloway capped a 0-8 Cibona run with a layup, but a free throw by Andrea Crosariol and a put-back basket by Slay tied the game again, 44-44. Warren scored again early in the fourth quarter but Avellino struggled to score. Meanwhile, Anderson buried a jumper while Sundov scored down low for a 55-55 tie. Head Coaches

MARKOVSKI, ZARE
Air Avellino
"We needed to win this game, because this way we finished our Euroleague season in a better way. We showed that we are a good team and I hope to repeat this experience in the near future. It was fascinating, but tiring too."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"This game wasn’t important for us, but we tried to win. In the second quarter, Avellino started leading the game and we made different mistakes. I think they won deservedly. We have two new players, Anderson and Sundov, and for me it was more important keep them in the game. The Top 16 is very difficult for every team, and we must try to be good."

Players

PORTA, ANTONIO
Air Avellino
"It’s always important to play a Euroleague match. Our coach gave us a great opportunity to play in this competition. In the end we must be proud to have participated in the Euroleague."
ANDERSON, ALAN
Cibona
"Avellino deserved to win this game. Now we have to get ready for the Top 16. There we will face other important teams. To compete with them we must play with great intensity. I’m looking forward to this new adventure."
