THE TAKE

Two teams from opposite ends of the Group B ladder clash on Wednesday when Le Mans Sarthe Basket hosts undefeated Lietuvos Rytas from Lithuania. Le Mans has played better than its 0-2 start would indicate, losing its games by a combined total of 6 points. Despite the poor results, head coach Vincent Collet has reason to be pleased with his charges, as he has seen a number of players rise to the occasion and show they are ready to move this team forward. Sam Clancy has been splendid inside, Nicolas Batum has established himself as a complete player who can hep out in every area and Luka Bogdanovic has settled into a role as a fine perimeter scorer. Off the bench, guards Nebojsa Bogavac and Raviv Limonad have shown they can be game-changers. Le Mans sometimes slow pace has resulted in it being the second-lowest-scoring team in the league this season, though it does shine in the hustle stats, ranking among the top six in offensive rebounds and steals. L. Rytas has looked sharp in its two wins so far and has proven in the past to be a very tough team on the road. Head coach Alexander Trifunovic's side is undefeated in 14 games overall so far this season, counting the Lithuanian and Baltic Leagues, too. Marijonas Petravicius was the star in Week 1 with 28 points and 8 rebounds in a win at Armani Jeans Milano. Last week Arturas Jomantas posted 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in a 92-74 win over Maccabi, earning co-Week 2 Euroleague MVP honors along the way. Now, one of the biggest off-season signings for Lietuvos Rytas, forward Chuck Eidson, is set to make his Euroleague debut after injuries sidelined him for the last two games. Eidson could match up with Batum, which could produce fireworks as both are creative players. Other interesting head-to-head matchups could be Clancy against Petravivius inside and Bogdanovic vs. Mindaugas Lukauskas on the perimeter. This game is crucial for both sides because of the message it could send. A 3-0 start for L. Rytas suddenly makes the team a real contender, while an 0-3 start for Le Mans could spell trouble. That alone should be plenty of reasons for both teams to come out charged in what promises to be an exciting encounter between two young teams.

Quotes Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"We lost twice by three points only, and it hurts a lot! Those are still two losses and a win against Lietuvos Rytas is almost compulsory. That's a tough goal when you know how Rytas is playing so far. This team seems to play together for five years, and on defense they really go hard. As for us, we would like to disturb their passing game and be aggressive at both ends of the court."
TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"I think we are facing an athletic, well-built team with loads of both young ambitious players with a great future waiting and experience in some positions like Bogavac and Clancy. Some of their guys bring Euroleague experience from last year. So I suppose Le Mans is a tough opponent. Every team that gets to the Euroleague is tough. They deserve full respect. Besides, it's their home game, so it's gonna be tough because they will surely want to grab their first win this season. We will simply try to control the game as much as possible. Let it be Le Mans, let it be any other team, I never want my players to lose concentration. Good teams simply cannot take it easy and underestimate their opponents."

Players

CLANCY, SAM
Le Mans
"We started well this Euroleague even if we haven't succeeded in winning at the end of the games. Every game is close, and we have to finish the games better. It will come in time because we have a young team. We have another tough game again Rytas. They didn’t lose yet and play really well. But I think that if we keep playing basketball like we have in the first two games, we can win this important game."
PETRAVICIUS, MARIUS
Lietuvos Rytas
"Honestly, we didn't have that much time to analyze Le Mans thoroughly yet, but I think we will be ready. Chuck Eidson had played in France before, so hopefully he will be a good guide. Looking at the standings, one can see that we're at the top and they're at the bottom. But we try not to think that way because, first, all teams have only played two games each, and second, Le Mans proved to be a tough opponent for Maccabi in Tel Aviv. It must be a solid team, especially at home. The way I'll play depends on many factors. Yes, they don't have very big guys to control the paint, but defense means a lot. Our first two games showed that everyone can turn out to be a leader in any game on our team."
Hollis Price - Lietuvos Rytas Lietuvos Rytas retained its undefeated record and a share of the Group B lead by invading Le Mans to come out with a 77-83 victory on Wednesday. Its second win in as many road trips left L. Rytas with a 3-0 record, tied in first place with Aris, which also won on Wednesday. Le Mans falls to 3-0 and last place in the standings. L. Rytas looked strong early but Le Mans made a game of it by tying at halftime and taking a two-point lead into the final quarter. But L. Rytas buckled down and made the big shots when it counted to come back and win. Hollis Price was there all night with big shots for the winners, and finished with 25 points and 6 assists. Marijonas Petravicius followed with 14 points for L. Rytas, while first-half pace-setters Matt Nielsen and Mindaugas Lukauskis added 13 and 11, respectively. Le Mans rode 20 points off the bench from Phil Ricci to get back in the game in the middle quarters. Sam Clancy added 15 points, Raviv Limonad 14, also in a reserve role, and Luka Bogdanovic 12.

Neilsen got L. Rytas on the board with a pick-and-roll dunk fed by Mindaugas Lukauskis. After Clancy got Le Mans started with a second-chance shot, Pietrevicius and Batum exchanged inside baskets for a 4-4 tie. Koffi hit a jumper for the first Le Mans lead, then another big man, Nielsen, answered with the game's first triple to make it 6-7. Clancy's two-pointer was answered by Hollis with a steal and fastbreak layup, then Nielsen broke underneath, making it 8-11 for L. Rytas. Luka Bogdanovic and Koffi got Le Mans within 12-13, but Hollis hammered in a triple in response. Nelsen's free throws boosted L. Rytas ahead by 13-18, but Phil Ricci came off the bench with a three-point hook-plus-free throw for Le Mans. L. Rytas finished the quarter strong, however, as Lukauskas free throws and a gutsy triple by Price left the visitors in charge again 16-23.

Phil Ricci - Le MansLukauskis added to the L. Rytas advantage with a running jumper to start the second quarter. Raviv Limonad sparked Le Mans by feeding Ricci for a dunk. Joao Batista came off the L. Rytas bench and hit a post-up shot. At 18-27, Le Mans took a timeout to talk about it, after which Clancy scored an inside basket and bonus free throw. Limonad's free throws and another Clancy two-pointer got the hosts as close as 25-29 before Lukauskis erupted for 5 consecutive points to reestablish the L. Rytas cushion. But Le Mans had a rhythm now. Nebojsa Bogavac made a three-point basket-plus-free throw before Ricci stepped out and matched him one one shot, cutting the difference to 31-32. L. Rytas was able to expand its lead again to 35-39 on Batista's turnaround jumper, but Ricci ruled the end of the half inside, putting back one offensive rebound, then tipping in his own miss on the buzzer for a 39-39 at the break.

Mindaugas Lukauskis - Lietuvos RytasLe Mans kept going inside to Clancy and Ricci to maintain its lead early in the third quarter, but soon the L. Rytas defense started paying more attention, particularly to second shots. Whenever the visitors from Lithuania needed a shot, however, Hollis was there to either take it or dish it to a teammate. He was getting some competition on offense from Limonad, now, who despite three fouls was a driving force for the hosts. Bogdanovic chose that moment to drill the first of his three-pointers, too, while on the L. Rytas side, Petravicius was stepping up his activity in the paint to counterbalance Le Mans. Nonetheless, the hosts held onto a 60-58 lead at the end of 30 minutes.

The final quarter was much like the previous one, with both teams looking for extra contributors, and L. Rytas got a major one in Chuck Eidson, who had made his first appearance of the season the previous quarter. Eidson did what he does best - a little of everything - collecting steals, getting to the foulline and hitting a big three-pointer from the corner that made things more comfortable as the guests took control. Just the same, it was still close in the final minute when Nicolas Batum of Le Mans was whistled for a technical foul, the free throws from which let L. Rytas put the wraps on a major road win.

Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
Against a very good and big team of Lietuvos Rytas, we played good on defense, but unfortunately we had problems with the last possessions. We can't finish with a victory. Hollis Price did a good job and thanks to him, his team won tonight. It's difficult to lose when we are so close to a victory, but we hope to win the next match."
TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"In the first half, we had problems at the inside positions. We were supposed to be dominant there, but with the turnovers we had, we gave Le Mans open spaces and that brought back their confidence. In the second half, we played a little bit more like a team on defense. With that, we took our chance to win."

Players

RICCI, PHIL
Le Mans
"We played really hard tonight. It's very difficult to lose like this, with the technical foul with 40 seconds to go. We should finish the last two minutes better. We have to be more focused."
PRICE, HOLLIS
Lietuvos Rytas
"It was a special game for me tonight. Le Mans was my first professionnal team. I was happy to play and to win in front of people who appreciate my game. Vincent Collet does a great job with his guys, but my team played a great match also."
