Reigning Euroleague champion Olympiaco Piraeus is through to the Top 16 and has only the small matter of contesting first place to worry about. EA7 Emporio Armani Milano, meanwhile, is involved in a three-way fight for the final ticket out of Group C. The respective goals both depend on other results, but winning in Week 10 is a requirement first of all. Olympiacos is unbeaten since Game 3 of the 2012-13 campaign and the Reds have overcome a two-game blip to breeze into the Top 16. Should Zalgiris Kaunas slip up in the final week of the regular season, then the Greek champs side would top Group C. Milano needs Cedevita to beat Caja Laboral in order to progress into the next stage from the fourth spot. It would be a mistake to overlook Olympiacos, however: In the first game between them, the Reds took a big win inspired by a vintage performance from Vassilis Spanoulis. The All-Euroleague guard hit 23 points and dished 9 assists in that contest, which showed all facets of Olympiacos’ game. Kostas Papanikolaou was on fire from beyond the arc that night, and has kept up that run with 58.6% shooting accuracy from three-pointers. That puts him third best in the Euroleague from outside, and makes him a devastating threat for any defense focusing on Spanoulis. The capability of both players for scoring and providing assists makes stopping the Olympiacos offense a tough task. Inside, Milano matches up well with ace rebounder and former Olympiacos star Ioannis Bourousis. Forward Malik Hairston caused problems for Olympiacos last time out, and will try to take the game to the opposition’s Georgios Printezis and Kyle Hines in a mouthwatering frontcourt battle. The Reds reeled off their seventh straight win to improve to 8-2, which left them second in Group C on a tiebreaker behind Zalgiris Kaunas. Olympiacos had a slim lead for most of the second half before Armani rallied to set up a thrilling finish. The last three-and-a-half minutes featured eight lead changes before free throws set up the last play: Milan’s Keith Langford missed a long jumper at the buzzer, leaving the win for the home side. Armani lost its third straight game to drop to 3-7. It finished the regular season in fifth place and will not partake in the Top 16. Vassilis Spanoulis, who received his bwin November MVP trophy before the game, paced the winners with 18 points, Kyle Hines scored 16 and grabbed 7 rebounds, Acie Law tallied 14 points and 5 assists, Kostas Papanikolaou scored 12 and Josh Powell 10. The game versus Armani Milano was special, because our second-place finish was almost decided, so we had to find motivation to play up to our usual standards. We didn't find rhythm through our defense and our shooting percentage behind the arc was very bad. Armani Milano has a lot of talented players and they are really good in one-on-one situations.
