THE TAKE

The race for the Top 16 in Group C will see two teams with a common goal go against each other in Thessaloniki, Greece, where Aris TT Bank hosts Eldo Napoli on Wednesday at 19:45 CET. Aris (4-5) is fifth in Group C and just lost its first home game against current Euroleague champion, CSKA Moscow. Meanwhile, Napoli (3-6) is sixth and on a two-game winning streak. Both teams faced each other in Napoli on November 8, when Eldo beat Aris 71-69 on free throws by Valerio Spinelli (4 ppg.) with 4.9 seconds to go. Alessandro Cittadini (6.8 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) led the winners with 12 points while Mason Rocca (11.6 ppg., 6.4 rpg.) ruled the boards with 14 rebounds. Alex Scales (15.1 ppg.) paced Aris with 17 points that night. Napoli has improved with Spinelli, Michel Morandais (10 ppg., 4.9 rpg.) and even Tyrone Ellis (8 ppg., 3.4 apg.) sharing the point guard duties. Morandais posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds against Zalgiris, while Ellis had season highs of 18 points and 8 assists in that win. They round a strong Napoli perimeter also featuring Matteo Malaventura (6.5 ppg.), three-point threat Jay Larranaga (4.7 ppg.) and steals specialist Jeff Trepagnier (10.9 ppg., 1.4 spg.), who has finally found his rhythm back. Aris has in Scales its main perimeter reference, but defensive ace Giorgos Sigalas (2.4 rpg.), scoring machine Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (5.9 ppg.) and slasher Savvas Iliadis (6.7 ppg.) round a deep, solid backcourt in which anyone can shine in offense. They will all need to make up for the missing production from playmaker Terrell Castle (9.3 ppg., 2.6 apg.), who underwent surgery for appendicitis on New Year's Day and will miss two weeks. Aris has found its own dynamic duo in center Mike Wilkinson (13.3 ppg., 5.8 rpg.) and power forward Jeremiah Massey (12.4 ppg., 8.4 rpg.), who combine for most of the minutes at both spots. Massey is a rebounding specialist to loves to attack the basket to take the outside shot. Wilkinson provides his all-around offensive skills, range and post moves. As such, Kevin Fletcher and Giannis Giannoulis will only see extended playing time if any of them gets in foul trouble. Napoli will try to do so, as Rocca is ready to challenge everyone under the rims, Ansu Sesay (7.9 ppg., 4.3 rpg.) can either score inside or take the outside shot while Cittadini will have an interesting matchup with Wilkinson, who has been unstoppable lately. If Aris, pushed by its incredible, devoted crowd, manages to slow down the tempo and look for its big men in the middle, it will have the most chances to win. Napoli needs strong defense, a fluent offense and take Aris into foul trouble to see its chances improve. One way or another, a big game is on its way in Group C.

Quotes Head Coaches

MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"Unfortunately, this year began in a harmful way. Terrell Castle, our starting point guard, underwent surgery due to appendicitis and he will be sidelined for two weeks. However, everyone will put an extra effort on the court to cover this absence and win the game against Napoli. Our opponent’s roster contains very experienced players, whose potential is really high. Moreover, they have won six out of their seven games both in Euroleague and Italian Championship. Our team never gets disappointed and gives up. I am very proud of my players and our fans, whose support is necessary to win this game. Be sure that they understand our players' effort and help them to reach their goals."
BUCCHI, PIERO
Eldo Napoli
“We know it will be a very tough game on a hot court. Aris is playing very well and increases its performances at home pushed by its fans. We have great confidence after our last games and positive results, and we want to prolong this moment.”

"The absence of Castle hurts us a lot but I am sure that we can win this game in front of our supportive fans. We have worked hard especially for this very important game for the qualification for the Top 16. Napoli has found its chemistry lately. I heard that they will miss Tierre Brown but I never care nothing but my team’s current condition."
MORENA, DOMENICO
Eldo Napoli
“This game will be very important for advancing to the next round. If they will win, [they] make a decisive step to the Top 16, but we are dreaming to reach the fifth place. We will play a tough game in a hot arena, but our performances are getting better every day and we fly to Greece to play our game and trying to get our second road win.”
Alex Scales - Aris TT Bank Aris TT Bank took a giant step towards its dream of a Top 16 qualification when it downed Group C direct rival Eldo Napoli 80-72 at home in Thessaloniki, Greece on Wednesday. Aris started 2007 right, reestablishing homecourt dominance to boost its record to 5-5 to share fourth place with Pau-Orthez Just as important, Aris sent Napoli down to 3-7 and covered the difference from their first game, won by the Italian team. Jeremiah Massey had another huge performance for the winners, with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Alex Scales added 17 points and Mike Wilkinson 10, while veteran Giorgios Sigalas came up with 6 assists and 3 steals for Aris. Ansu Sensay was the big gun for Napoli, with 20 points, while Jay Larranaga added 16 and Tyrone Ellis 15. The visitors used 12 three-pointers to stay within striking distance into the second half, but Aris used a 13-1 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters to take over completely.

Michel Morandais of Napoli used his athletism to create room for a jumper that was the game’s first basket. After Massey tied, both teams shared some scoring difficulties; the visitors insisting on shots from outside, while Aris missed opportunities inside. Larranaga of Napoli and Scales finally connected with a triple each to make it 5-5. Larranaga kept firing, first making a layup in traffic and then connecting from behind the arc to give himself 8 points within 5 minutes. Scales answered back with his second three-pointer, however, to tie it up, 10-10. Aris continued to play up-tempo as baskets by Giorgos Sigalas and Scales made it 14-10. Wilkinson boosted the Aris run to 9-0, before Sesay nailed a triple at 16-13. Scales fed Massey for an impressive dunk but Tyrone Ellis scored Napoli's fourth triple so far to make it 18-16. Mahmut Abdul-Rauf and Scales helped Aris close the first quarter in style with a 22-16 lead and Scales already having scored 10 points.

Ansu Sesay - Eldo NapoliSesay connected for 5 straight points and also blocked Abdul-Rauf's shot to help Napoli cut the difference to 23-21 early in the second quarter. Aris coach Andrea Mazzon used a lineup with three big men, Giannis Giannoulis coming off the bench to play alongside starters Massey and Wilkinson - and it paid dividends. Aris found now points in the paint from Giannoulis and Massey to reestablish a solid lead at 29-22. Jeff Trepagnier put an end to Aris's 6-0 run, but soon Giorgos Kalaitzis connected for the hosts to make it 31-24. Savvas Iliadis added a triple that allowed Aris to build its biggest difference yet, 35-26, however Rocca beat the buzzer for Napoli to send the teams to the break with a 37-30 scoreboard.

Sigalas nailed the three-pointer to up the Aris margin to double figures for the first time, 40-30, right after the break. Wilkinson increased it to 42-30, but Larranaga popped from the arc for Napoli. Three-pointers allowed Napoli to stay close as Sesay added another at 44-36. Aris kept running the floor with Massey and Wilkinson finishing a couple of quick attacks to make it 48-36. Sesay and Ellis answered back for the visitors at 48-40. Baskets were coming easy now for both teams as Massey and Scales for Aris, Larranaga and Ellis for Napoli found the way to the net for a 55-45 scoreboard. Ellis and Sesay again proved the men for Eldo as their baskets cut the difference to 55-49. However, Aris was the team to save the third quarter’s last word as Kalaitzis, Scales and Massey boosted the hosts to a high lead of 61-49 after 30 minutes.

The fourth quarter started with 2 scoreless minutes that Massey ended with a good basket-plus-free throw good for a 64-49 advantage. A great defensive effort by Sigalas led to his third steal and a no-look assist, his fifth, as Aris sailed ahead 66-49. Aris did not slow down; Wilkinson finished another fast break at 68-50 before Ellis scored Napoli'sninth triple. When the guests managed to cut the margin to 70-57, they tried a full-court press. Ellis chipped in a triple to get them as close as 74-62 and with under 3 minutes left, Larranaga added another triple to bring the guests within single digits at 74-65. Abdul-Rauf answered them, driving for a basket to break Napoli's comeback momentum as Aris sealed a 80-72 win that also covered the difference of its loss in Italy in their first game.

Head Coaches

MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
“I was worrying how my team would return to the court after two weeks out of action and without our starting point guard, Terrell Castle, but we did it. This is a very important win and another step towards the dream of making the Top 16. We didn’t qualify yet, but we have the ambition to win all the four remaining games. Tonight we got big help from our bench players and I am very happy because we dished 21 assists and committed only 7 turnovers.”
BUCCHI, PIERO
Eldo Napoli
“We knew the difficulties of this match, since only CSKA Moscow won in Thessaloniki. We played good, but we didn’t have the heart needed to come back in the game. Aris played a solid game, built a margin and kept it till the end of the game. When you play away, you pay for every turnover and missed shot. I think that the situation remains open and we are still alive to fight for the qualification.”

Players

ILIADIS, SAVVAS
Aris TT Bank
“It was the most important match of the regular season, because we came from a two-week break and had no rhythm. But Aris proved once again that it has the potential to take the results. The fans pushed us to the victory and when you play with such a passion, you cannot lose.”
