THE TAKE

A big showdown between undefeated teams in Group G takes place in Malaga, Spain, where Unicaja hosts Panathinaikos on Wednesday. Unicaja and Panathinaikos registered respective wins against Lottomatica Roma and Partizan last week, meaning that the winner will take a step towards a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs from competitive Group G. Panathinaikos may travel to Malaga without center Kostas Tsartsaris, who missed the Top 16 opener against Partizan last week. If Tsartsaris is sidelined, Nikola Pekovic will see most minutes at center. Pekovic leads a star-studded frontcourt that also includes big man Mike Batiste, power forward Antonis Fotsis and three-point specialist Dusan Sakota. Pekovic and Batiste will face another strong frontcourt combo in Robert Archibald and Boniface Ndong. Fotsis could be the right man to stop Marcus Haislip due to its versatility and quickness., while Sakota will match his shooting skills against German Gabriel. The point guard battle will be equally interesting, as Omar Cook has been in great shape recently, but Carlos Cabezas is also fully healthy, giving Unicaja head coach Aito Garcia Reneses several options on offense. Cook will have the tough mission to guard Dimitris Diamantidis, even though swingman Thomas Kelati may see some playing time against him, too. Cabezas will test his creativity and driving skills against three-time Euroleague winner Sarunas Jasikevicius. Both teams are deep and balanced at both wing spots. Kelati has just entered the prime of his career and is surrounded by experienced, talented veterans like Jiri Welsch, Carlos Jimenez and Berni Rodriguez. Joseph Gomis is ready to come off the bench and change any game with instant offense. Kelati faces a big matchup against Vassilis Spanoulis, Jimenez battles against the Greens' starting small forward Stratos Perperoglou. Drew Nicholas hopes to showcase his scoring skills against a good defender in Rodriguez, while defensive stopper Dusan Kecman and experienced swingman Nikos Hatzivrettas are also available for head coach Zeljko Obradovic to change the game. Unicaja must get Archibald, Haislip and Ndong involved, while trying to get Pekovic into foul trouble. Panathinaikos must play at a high rhythm with Diamantidis and Jasikevicius running the show. The amount of big name stars and experience that will grace the Martin Carpena Arena ensures that this game will be of the highest quality with every shot counting until the closing seconds.

GAME NOTES

Unicaja
  • Center Boniface NDong has blocked a shot in 8 straight games and is averaging 3 blocks per game in his last four appearances.
  • Forward Carlos Jimenez and guard Berni Rodriguez are each just 1 steal shy of reaching 100 in their respective Euroleague Basketball careers.
  • Point guard Omar Cook has dished at least 3 assists in every game this season and at least 5 assists in more than half of them.
  • Unicaja has won 23 consecutive home games at the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga Spain.
  • Forward Marcus Haislip was a teammate of Panathinaikos guard Drew Nicholas during the 2006-07 season at Efes Pilsen.
Panathinaikos
  • Forward Antonis Fotsis is 2 three-pointers away from 100 for his Euroleague career.
  • Guard Sarunas Jasikevicius is 10 assists away from becoming just the fourth player to reach the 500-assist mark in the Euroleague this decade. He is also just 3 steals shy of the 100-steal plateau.
  • Center Nikola Pekovic led Panathiniakos to victory against Partizan Belgrade last week by scoring a season-high 26 points. He was named co-MVP for the week along with Lior Eliyahu and D’Or Fisher from Maccabi, marking the second time in his career that Pekovic has been among the Euroleague’s players of the week.
  • Guard Dimitris Diamantidis had one of the greatest performances of his Euroleague career playing against Unicaja in November 2006. Diamantidis recorded career-highs of 20 points and 7 steals and also dished 5 assists for a 30 index in the Greens’ 87-72 victory.
  • Panathinaikos has two wins among its last five trips to face Unicaja in Malaga. Unicaja is currently riding a league-best 23-game home-court winning streak.
  • After beating AEL on the road, the Greens are nearing a Greek League first. That win was the club’s 999th in its history starting from 1963 and if the Greens beat Panionios On Telecoms at home next Sunday, Panathinaikos will reach the historic 1,000-win mark.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"It is an important game because the chances to advance if you lose at home are considerably less, and on top of that, Panathinaikos is one of the main candidates for the title. Regardless of the specfici results that they had until now, it is obvious that they were not in a hurry to be in a good moment, as they are interested in being well at the optimal moment, taking into account that CSKA Moscow, Panathinaikos, Tau Ceramica or Regal FC Barcelona are the main candidates. As long as they advance, I don't think they really care that they start better or worse, but it is clear that now they will not stop pushing because money time is here. Last year Pekovic was one of the best players in the Euroleague, but we cannot talk about a single player because they have an impressive roster. They know how to play and they have many players who control the tempo of the game, and that is important to win the game."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"The game against Malaga is difficult and important. They play very well. They are really aggressive at both ends of the court, and the atmosphere there is always tough. Their fans always give a great push to their team, but the most important thing is that they play at a very top level. It will be necessary for us to have a great performance if we want to win. Lately we are playing better and we will have to be focused on every play during the game. The only problem we faced during our preparation was Kostas Tsartsaris, who has sprained his ankle and missed our last game in the Greek league against Larissa."

Players

CABEZAS, CARLOS
Unicaja
"Panathinaikos is a team with many stars, the main of them being Diamantidis or Jasikevicius. But apart from that they had big signings like Pekovic, who is responding with good numbers. Beating Panathinaikos can be very positive for us after our win in Rome, and starting from here it would be a big step forward for us. The key will be concentration on the small details, and being intense for 40 minutes. They have a talented roster with winning character, and this is the kind of game every player loves. We are optimistic towards this important game against a great rival."
BATISTE, MIKE
Panathinaikos
"Everybody will have a big job to do. This is an important game for us, because we know that if we win this one, we are going to be in a really good situation, especially having the next game here at home against Roma. So we will try to go there and play as hard as we can to win. I think we can do it. Once we had our record broken by them in 2005-06, we were up to 42 straight home wins, so hopefully we can go down there and do the same thing to them. We don't go there just because. We are going to fight. The last three of four games we really took care of the ball and if we do the same thing in Malaga, we give ourselves a chance to beat them. If we make silly turnovers, these guys run up and down the court in every chance. In addition, our goal is to control the tempo and try to keep them in half court. We have to be patient and not allow easy baskets."
Drew Nicholas - PanathinaikosA three-quarter thriller ended up belonging solely to the visitors as Panathinaikos broke Unicaja's 23-game Euroleague home win streak with a 69-81 victory in Malaga, Spain on Wednesday that was good for first place in Group G. Panathinaikos raised its record to 2-0 in the group, while Unicaja joined Partizan in second place at 1-1. A wild start featured Panathinaikos making a 0-11 first-quarter run immediately followed by Unicaja's 13-0 response. The ultra-exciting middle quarters produced 13 lead changes and 8 ties. The last lead change, however, came on a triple by Drew Nicholas to open the fourth quarter, and that soon turned into a 2-15 run as the Panathinaikos defense denied Unicaja any decent shots and any chance to rally the home crowd. Nicholas finished with 19 points for the winners, followed closely by Sarunas Jasikevicius with 18. Nikola Pekovic added 15 points and 7 rebounds, Dmitris Diamantidis 10 points and Vassilis Spanoulis 9 plus 7 assists. Unicaja, which enjoyed 8 three-pointers from six different players before the half, made only a couple more after it while settling for only 9 assists. Marcus Haislip led the hosts with 14 points while Berni Rodriguez had 12, Omar Cook 11 and Thomas Kelati 10. Unicaja hadn't lost at home in Euroleague play since doing so to Maccabi by 67-83 on December 16, 2006.

Berni Rodriguez - UnicajaCarlos Cabezas riled up the home crowd by beating the shot clock with a triple on the game's first possession, but Pekovic and Diamantidis soon made it to the rim for Panathinaikos to take a 3-4 lead. Nicholas found Pekovic for a dunk alone and Panathinaikos took its third steal already before Diamantidis drove to make it 3-8. The visitors' next pick-'n'-roll, Diamantidis to Pekovic, was worth a basked and free throw, making it an 0-11 run for Panathinaikos. The run ended with a second triple by Cabezas, but Nicholas answered with a two-point jumper. Haislip became Unicaja's second scorer with an acrobatic layup, also on the shot-clock buzzer, and Carlos Jimenez the third with a fastbreak triple from the corner to make it 11-13. Next, it was Haislip raising a shot from downtown, and Unicaja had itself a new lead, 14-13. By the time Rodriguez landed Unicaja's fifth triple from the corner, the crowd was revived and the hosts were up 17-13. Rodriguez would get another layup to cap a 13-0 run by Unicaja before Nicholas stopped the bleeding for Panathinaikos for a 19-15 scoreboard to close the first quarter.

To open the second, Panathinaikos got a big three-pointer, its first, from Dusan Kecman. After Jiri Welsch and Mike Batiste traded baskets, Nicholas forged a 21-21 tie at the foul line. Cook answered with a big triple, but on the next inbounds play, Spanoulis created a new tie from downtown, 24-24. Panathinaikos re-took the lead on a screen-and-roll dunk from Jasikevicius to Batiste, but Cook was having none of it and blasted another three-pointer. Jasikevicius popped a jumper off a screen that Boniface Ndong matched by rolling to the basket as the lead kept changing hands. It did so some more with Spanoulis driving for a layup and Jiri Welsch hitting 2 of 2 free throws. Panathinaikos blinked first, missing an alley-oop dunk pass that Cook punished by raising up for his third triple in 3 minutes to make it 34-30. Spanoulis and Batiste got 3 points back at the foul line, and Haislip had a basket in between them, but Jasikevicius soon blasted from the corner to tie 36-36. Within seconds, however, Kelati answered with the same shot and Jimenez added a free throw to put Unicaja up 40-36. Jasikevicius merely dropped a triple from the other corner, and then Diamantidis lined up high for a huge go-ahead three-pointer at 40-42 for Panathinaikos. Kelati hit 3 of 3 free throws for another lead change, that Jasikevicius turned around again with a short jumper, but Kelati got back to the line for the final word of the first half, Unicaja 45-44.

Nikola Pekovic - PanathinaikosKelati scored on an inbound play to start the second half, but missed the accompanying foul shot. Jasikevicius made sure of his three-point lane jumper-plus-free throw, however, forging a new tie, 47-47. Ndong went high for a go-ahead bank shot, but Jasikevicius fed Pekovic for a dunk and then the Panathinaikos center scored again to regain the lead, 49-51. The Panathinaikos defense had Unicaja forcing late shots, while Spanoulis added an easy basket to the visitors' lead. Unicaja got Robert Archibald to the foul line, where he made 2 of 2. A couple of tough defensive minutes ended with Diamantidis beating the shot-clock from way downtown and lifting the lead to 51-56. Unicaja used its defense now - back-to-back blocks by Haislip and Archibald - to ignite its offense, a much-needed basket by the former. Next, Haislip got the foul line and made 3 of 4 shots to tie, 56-56. Cook did the take-over honors with a huge steal and coast-to-coast layup for a new Unicaja lead, 58-56, forcing a Panathinaikos timeout. After Unicaja stole but turned the ball over, Nicholas made the hosts pay with a huge triple for another lead change. Sure enough, with the shot clock about to stop, Rodriguez rained his own shot from the arc, and Unicaja was up 61-59. Pekovic got to the line for a quiet end to a wild quarter, hitting 2 of 2 free throws for a 61-61 tie - the game's 10th - after 30 minutes.

Nicholas completed the latest Panathinaikos resurgence with a triple to open the final quarter at 61-64, the game's 16th lead change. Several misses by Unicaja followed before Spanoulis connected with Pekovic for a layup. Unicaja's drought reached 4 minutes and Archibald fouled out before Jasikevicius nailed a triple alone to make it 61-69 for Panathinaikos. Haislip finally restarted Unicaja's score from the foul line, but Nicholas made a great tip-in to answer for Panathinaikos. A new scoring lull and a Unicaja timeout ended with another steal for Panathinaikos and Batiste dunking on the break. Great ball movement soon found Nicholas alone on the perimeter, who buried the shot and with it much of Unicaja's hope as the score hit 63-76 with 2:30 left to play. Cabezas free throws and Rodriguez layups gave Unicaja the next 6 points, but just in case more points are needed later in the Top 16, Nicholas capped his best Euroleague performance in a Panathinaikos uniform with a game-ending triple to send the Greens home happy.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"Panathinaikos came disguised as a lamb. People believed that just because it was third in its regular season group, it was an easy opponent. We saw their potential tonight and we came here as the underdog. They played very well and I have to credit my players for their great effort, because we found a lot of difficulties and we couldn't do better. They are an experienced team and this was like finding a wall and seeing it is impossible to climb. Panathinaikos is a fair winner, they played really well and they hadn't played to their potential until now. This is not the end of the world. We must work to improve right away, in the best way possible."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"It was an important game, like all of them in the Top 16. We played against one of the best teams in Europe. We played a very good game, especially on defense. We knew that Unicaja wants to use full-court pressure and we were ready for that. Unicaja is a good team and they made many three-pointers in the first half. We improved our defense in the second half and took advantage of the talent of our players. This is an important step forwards, but everything stays the same. All the teams have chances to qualify. We played one of our best games of this season. I am very happy, especially because of our defensive work in the second half."

Players

RODRIGUEZ, BERNI
Unicaja
"We must learn from this loss and why it happened. We only managed to score 2 field goals in the fourth quarter. We have to analyze our mistakes and keep our head high because the Top 16 has just started. We still have chances to make it to the playoffs. They were the fair winners tonight and there is nothing we can say about that. We must move forward and start thinking about next Wednesday’s game against Partizan, a tough opponent and in place with a strong basketball atmosphere."
CABEZAS, CARLOS
Unicaja
"It wasn't our best game. After being really close, Panathinaikos broke the game open in the fourth quarter. We played one of the worst fourth quarters of the season. They are an excellent team and if you don't give 100% all 40 minutes long, it is very tough to beat them."
JASIKEVICIUS, SARUNAS
Panathinaikos
"It was a good game for us, probably one of the best this season. It wasn't easy, but our defense was important to win here. We managed to beat a team that, I think, will reach the playoff from this group. I was very happy to come back to Spain and play in Malaga, where I lifted my first title with FC Barcelona. It is a great place to play with these fans."
