THE TAKE

A rematch of last year's Euroleague semifinal takes place in Barcelona, Spain, when Winterthur FCB welcomes CSKA Moscow on Thursday at 20:45 CET. Both teams are already into the next round, as CSKA (10-2) is the Group C champion while Barcelona (8-4) needs either one more victory or an Aris loss to mathematically clinch second place. Barcelona will also be looking outside the group and thinking about the chance to become the best second-place team in the competition, which comes with the prize of top seeding in the upcoming Top 16, together with the group winners. A sense of revenge is in the air at Palau Blaugrana, as CSKA rallied from a 10-point deficit in last year's semifinals to beat Barcelona 75-84 behind 19 points each from J.R. Holden (9.3 ppg., 1.2 spg.) and Theodoros Papaloukas (9.9 ppg., 4.9 apg.). Both players will see extended playing time on Thursday, as David Vanterpool (7.3 ppg., 1.6 spg.) remains sidelined due to back spasms. CSKA also travelled without its top scorer, forward Matjaz Smodis (12.9 ppg., 43.9% 3FG), who is injured, too. The visitors have plenty firepower to spare, however. On the perimeter, star swingman Trajan Langdon (12.6 ppg., 4.7 rpg.) will share responsibility with Holden and Papaloukas. Veteran Zakhar Pashutin (44.4% 3FG) and youngsters Anton Ponkrashov 3.6 ppg.) and Nikita Kourbanov (2.3 ppg.) will offer some help at both wings. Papaloukas, who broke his 89-game streak of coming off the bench last week, will have a tough matchup against Jaka Lakovic (11.3 ppg.) and Roko-Leni Ukic (4.7 ppg., 42.9% 3FG), while Holden and Langdon will have a marquee shootout against Gianluca Basile (10.5 ppg., 44.4% 3FG) and Juan Carlos Navarro (18.5 ppg., 46.7% 3FG, 90.2% FT), the current Euroleague top scorer. Defensive ace Rodrigo De La Fuente (5 ppg., 50% 3FG) and shooting guard Roger Grimau (40% 3FG) will be ready to help Barcelona in many ways. With big man Mario Kasun (11.9 ppg.) still sidelined, Barcelona counts on Fran Vazquez (4.7 ppg.) and Denis Marconato (6.6 ppg., 4.6 rpg.) to share all minutes at the center spot. Vazquez is set to have a key matchup against David Andersen (10.1 ppg., 64.7% 3FG), while Marconato will test his rebounding skills against Aleksey Savrasenko (8.1 ppg., 68.8% 2FG) and Thomas Van den Spiegel (3.8 ppg.). Barcelona's inside defensive specialist, Jordi Trias (5.3 ppg., 5 rpg., 2.3 apg.), will also take his shot at CSKA's big men. With two of the best teams in Europe ready to measure each other before the Top 16, a top-quality game is guaranteed at historical Palau Blaugrana.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Winterthur FC Barcelona
"We are in a position to fight to become the best second-place team in this phase of the Euroleague and we’ll try to make it in order to get as good a position in the draw as we can. The game against CSKA Moscow is now the first step. CSKA is a very strong team at all positions. The quality of their players is so great that it’s imposible to stress any given part of their game. They like to play with four open players, trying to take advantage of the good shooter that Andersen is. On defense, they play with aggressiveness, with a physical style, and they get a lot of steals. Their inside players are always going for offensive rebounds and that gives second opportunities to their teammates."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"This is a classical game between two excellent teams. Unfortunately we will travel to Barcelona without Smodis and Vanterpool. But there is nothing we can do about it. It will be a good opportunity for the young players to play in the excellent atmosphere of Blaugrana arena."

Players

MARCONATO, DENIS
Winterthur FC Barcelona
"CSKA is for sure one of the best teams in European basketball and they will try to do their best in Barcelona. We all know this will be a tough game and we’ll need to fight until the end if we want to get a win. Their outside men like to play in the low post and they get a lot of points from this situation. Everybody knows how good players like Papaloukas, Holden and Langdon are. Any one of them can win a game on his own."
PASHUTIN, ZAKHAR
CSKA Moscow
"It is always hard to play games on the road against rivals like Barcelona. In front of their fans, they have extra motivation. For us, it is important to defend them well, especially their three-point shooters."
Theo Papaloukas - CSKA Moscow CSKA Moscow double-stamped its Group C title by rallying to defeat second-place Winterthur FCB 70-78 on the road in Barcelona on Thursday despite missing two starters. CSKA's 10th consecutive victory raised its record to 12-1, best in the entire Euroleague. Barcelona dropped to 8-5 and a likely second-level seeding in the upcoming Top 16 Draw. After trailing by 16 at haltime, CSKA used a 7-19 third quarter to get back in the game. J.R.Holden helped cap the rally by putting CSKA ahead late in the fourth quarter before Jaka Lakovic banged a triple on the buzzer for Barcelona to force overtime at 65-65. A 0-7 surge midway through the extra session sealed the victory for CSKA, who played without its leading scorer, Matjaz Smodis, and defender, David Vanterpool. Holden led the winners with 18 points, while David Andersen had 15, Theo Papaloukas 14 and 9 assists. Trajan Langdon added 12 points and Thomas Van Den Spiegel had 10 for CSKA. Lakovic was the hosts' best scorer with 13 points, while Juan Carlos Navarro added 11 and Gianluca Basile 10.

Langdon posted a quick jumper to start the game, and he soon added a three-point play for a 0-5 CSKA lead in 90 seconds. The pace was fast, but only when the ball reached Denis Marconato's hands did Barcelona score, as he found 4 points in a row. A long hook and added free throw by Aleksey Savrasenko made it 4-8. Both teams ran a lot as Lakovic and Papaloukas traded buckets. CSKA pulled Andersen from the paint to hit a five-meter jumper. Lakovic started to get his touch, too. His next basket and the first by Rodrigo De la Fuente made it 11-12. Fran Vazquez put the hosts ahead for the first time with free throws, 13-12, and soon slammed over youngster Andrei Voroncevich. Barca was on fire now as Navarro hit on triple to seal an 8-2 run and a 19-14 lead. After a free throw by Holden, Navarro bombed from the arc again and closed the first quarter with free throws for a 24-17 score.

Papaloukas and Michalis Kakiouzis started the scoring race in the second quarter. A Kakiouzis dunk upped the lead to 28-19 but soon Anton Ponkrashov fed Andersen underneath for a basket. Roko-Leni Ukic's triple sent Barcelona's lead over 10 points to 32-21. The hosts managed to break CSKA's defense again and again with passes and cuts, while the visitors' offense suffered. Roger Grimau blasted a three-pointer for Barcelona as the crowd got noise, but Van Den Spiegel quieted them with an easy layup. Basile put in 4 consecutive points, including a fastbreak, and Kakiouzis registered a big block on Langdon as Barcelona ruled the boards by a 22-11 margin after 19 minutes. When Lakovic downed another layup, Barcelona took a 43-27 advantage into halftime.

Fran Vazquez - Winterthur FCBAndersen opened the second half with CSKA's first triple after eight attempts, and Papaloukas followed with the second. Savrasenko's layup made it an 0-8 run as the visitors pulled within 43-35. De la Fuente stopped the bleeding for Barcelona with a hook, but Papaloukas answered for CSKA, whose run hit 2-12 when Van den Spiegel slammed. Holden poured it on with another triple as the difference closed all the way to 42-45. Ukic got a free throw from the hosts, but CSKA scored again on a fastbreak. Basile hit the long turnaround jumper that Van den Spiegel matches with free throws to help CSKA stay close at, 48-46. Basile hit free throws and Papaloukas fed Nikita Kourbanov as the quarter ended with Barcelona clinging to a 50-48 edge.

With some effort, Jordi Trias managed to score to open the final quarter for Barcelona, but Langdon made it look easy converting Papaloukas's sixth assist. The action slowed until Holden blasted a triple to make it a one-point game, 54-53. Vazquez saved Barcelona this time, blocking Van den Spiegel's shot and scoring to make it 56-53, but Papaloukas was waiting with a triple to tie at 56-56. The game entered its last 4 minutes with Lakovic's long jumper and another block by Vazquez on Van den Spiegel as the hosts went up 60-56. Soon, however, Holden uncorked another triple to put CSKA ahead for the first time since the game's opening minutes, 60-61. When Barcelona missed its next shot, Holden did it again, blasting another from downtown to make it 60-63. With 9 seconds to go, Lakovic scored free throws to make it 62-63 and Barca fouled fast. Free throws by Andersen made it 62-65 with eight seconds to go, but Lakovic stepped up in the last second from seven meters to hit the three-pointer that tied the game at 65-65 after regulation time.

Navarro finally scored again to open the extra session but Papaloukas replied fast for CSKA. Van den Spiegel fed Andersen for a jumper, and when Langdon posted a three-pointer it looked like CSKA was starting to control the game, 68-72. CSKA played by heart as new baskets by Holden and Van den Spiegel made it 68-76. Marconato replied going into the last minute, but Andersen did the same to secure CSKA's new road win by 70-78.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Winterthur FC Barcelona
"Same old story. We have to learn that games last for 40 minutes, not only the first 20. We were soft again in the third quarter. We tried to react but we didn't find solutions to our bad offensive play. I don't care about not being the best second, last year we qualified for the Top 16 as fifth in our group and we reached the Final Four. The most important thing is the rivals you meet in the Top 16, not our seed in the draw."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"In these cases normally it's half anf half: one team plays well and the other not. We played worse in the first half and Barca did great, while in the second half things just turned around. We took a big win against a motivated team. Being first in our group is not that important. Last year we were not a top seed and we won the title. There were no magic formulas at the break in the lockerroom, we just analyzed the game to face it from another perspective. My players are a great group also, they always want to play and do their best on court."

Players

VAZQUEZ, FRAN
Winterthur FC Barcelona
"We have to work hard on this problem. I can't explain what happens to us in the third quarters. We have to fix that. We played well in the first half, we were better than CSKA, the Euroleague champs. However, after the break we just disappeared. Maybe we relaxed because we saw we had a good cushion. I dont know. The only truth is that we went down in the second half."
ANDERSEN, DAVID
CSKA Moscow
"It was a good game, fun to play. We played a bad first half and we missed two players such as Vanterpool and Smodis. We trailed and then got nervous. However we reacted in the second half and reacted both in offense and defense. It was a big shot by Lakovic in the end. It was not an easy shot but maybe we didn't do everything we could to stop it."
