THE TAKE

A direct fight for the first place in Group G takes place in Moscow, Russia, where Dynamo hosts Unicaja on Wednesday at 18:15 CET. Dynamo (1-1) broke its six-game winning streak last week with a 74-55 road loss against Benetton Treviso. Meanwhile, Unicaja (2-0) is the only undefeated team in Group G and is on a five-game winning streak in the competition. It will also be the first-ever official game between both teams. Above all, it is the chance to see a highly-anticipated matchup between two of the best centers in the competition, Lazaros Papadopoulos (15.9 ppg., 6.9 rpg., 1.4 spg.) of Dynamo and Daniel Santiago (11.5 ppg., 4.8 rpg.) of Unicaja. Papadopoulos, who earned Euroleague January MVP honors, has his perfect frontcourt complement in Antonis Fotsis (13.9 ppg., 47.3% 3FG, 6.4 rpg.), with physical big men Obinna Ezekie (6.3 ppg., 65.5% 2FG) and Yuri Vasilyev (3.2 ppg.) coming off the bench. Santiago will have to stay out of foul trouble against Papadopoulos, whose set of post moves and hook shots make him almost unstoppable when he is focused. Carlos Jimenez (6.9 ppg., 4.8 rpg.) will have an interesting matchup against Fotsis, while shot blocking ace Florent Pietrus (3.9 ppg., 3.6 rpg.), three-point threat Marko Tusek (45.5% 3FG) and hard-nosed center Iñaki De Miguel (2.4 ppg.) will be ready to come off the bench. Unicaja will have to slow playmaker Bojan Popovic (11.3 ppg., 1.9 spg.), who leads the Top 16 index rating at 26 per night, and who share Dynamo's point guard duties with Eddie Gill (6.7 ppg., 44.4% 3FG). Unicaja counts on a top defensive player like Carlos Cabezas (9.2 ppg.), as well as an outstanding floor general like Pepe Sanchez (6.7 ppg., 2.9 spg.). Both players are used to share some time on court, so Cabezas may test his defensive and slashing skills against Sergey Monya (3.8 ppg.) or Taquan Dean (8.5 ppg.). Both players are ready to step up and play quality minutes along Dmitri Domani (6 ppg., 43.8% 3FG) and Sergey Bykov (2.4 ppg.). Unicaja rounds his backcourt with do-it-all swingmen Jiri Welsch (9.9 ppg., 43.3% 3FG, 1.4 spg.) and Berni Rodriguez (11.9 ppg.), as well as scoring specialist Kostas Vasileadis (6.9 ppg.). Above all, the winners will take a crucial step towards reaching the playoffs, so expect nothing but intensity in Krilatskoe Arena.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"We have a very complicated situation before one very complicated game. In January, we had a complete team, including Miroslav Raicevic after three months, but now we are without Travis Hansen and Raicevic again, but also with problems for Ekezie, Trushkin and Domani. Ekezie felt again pain in his muscle, Trushkin has old problems with his heel while our captain Dmitry Domani was sick and he played in St. Petersbourg only the last 7 seconds. Domani will be ready to play, but not in optimal conditions, while for Trushkin and specially Ekezie I don't know and in this situation it's very difficult for me talk about the game. Generally, Unicaja is now in a very good moment. After the Spanish King's Cup they have won 2 games in the Euroleague and 2 in the Spanish league, they have more confidence and no doubt that it will be a very hard game."
SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We play away from home against the group leader at the time of the draw, a team that played the regular season in a very tough group, finishing ahead of teams at the highest level. Dynamo is also the only team in our Top 16 group that has won a game away from home, and as such, has taken an important advantage with respect to the the rest who have simply won games at home. We are aware of the difficult of our task, and we're trying to prepare ourselves in the best possible way to try to exploit our skills and battle in an away game following a series of good partidos played and won at home."

Players

BYKOV, SERGEY
Dynamo Moscow
"First of all, we must to try to play better than in Treviso last week. I am sure that we can do this. We have some problems with injuries, but the players that will play will give 100 percent of their possibilities. Unicaja won two games but they played both games at home and the game in Moscow will be a good test to see if they are so strong also on the road. In our first home game in the Top 16 will be very important to win and make one big step to the playoff."
CABEZAS, CARLOS
Unicaja
"It would be key to win an away game, because that would mean making another step toward the playoffs, as it's always important to win road games. To do so, we have to concentrate all 40 minutes, defend well and try to have the fewest dips possible. We go to Moscow with our options open. Our team arrives healthy, with a lot of confidence and all we have to do is try to play at 100 percent."
Bojan Popovic - Dynamo Moscow Dynamo took a share of first place in Top 16 Group G by downing previously undefeated Unicaja 86-80 at home in Moscow on Wednesday in the first game ever played between the two clubs. Both now share the top spot in Group G with a 2-1 records, but Benetton Treviso could join them with a road win at Aris TT Bank in Thessaloniki, Greece on Thursday. Bojan Popovic paced the winners with 21 points, including 10 of his team's last 16 points in the game's final 5 minutes. Taquan Dean added 16, Lazaros Papadopoulos 15 and 9 rebounds while Antonis Fotsis scored 13 points for Dynamo. Berni Rodriguez led all scorers with 22 points for Unicaja. Marko Tusek added 12 and Pepe Sanchez 10 for the visitors. Dean and Fotsis fueled a 10-0 run that broke the game early in the second quarter and paced Dynamo to a 20-point lead, 42-22 advantage late in the first half. Jiri Welsch, Tusek and Rodriguez fueled a 2-21 run for Unicaja after the break while Carlos Cabezas gave Unicaja a 65-66 edge after three quarters. Unicaja's 36-point third quarter was the second-most ever in 10 minutes of a Top 16 game, tying two other teams. Dynamo improved its defense down the stretch, however, and an outstanding Popovic led Dynamo to a key home win.

Dynamo went straight to Papadopoulos from the start of the game, but free throws by Santiago and a put-back basket by Carlos Jimenez gave Unicaja a quick 2-3 edge. The guests tried double-teaming situations on Papadopoulos, who committed consecutive turnovers in the early going, but not for long. Meanwhile, Berni Rodriguez followed a five-meter jumper with a corner triple to cap a 0-8 Unicaja run that made it 2-8. Papadopoulos then turned things around. He stepped up with a three-point play and Antonis Fotsis added free throws to get Dynamo within 7-8. Jiri Welsch nailed a mid-range shot that Bojan Popovic matched with a layup. Papadopoulos shined with a second-chance basket and soon added a baseline jumper to give Dynamo a 13-10 edge. Sergey Monya dunked off a steal to make Unicaja call timeout at 15-10. Dynamo's run was up to 13-2. Rodriguez stepped up with a driving layup that Papadopoulos matched another put-back layup before free throws by Kostas Vasileadis of Unicaja fixed the score at 18-14 after 10 minutes. Of the 17 shots Dynamo took in the first quarter, Papadopoulos had 12.

Berni Rodriguez - UnicajaDean hit a three-pointer in transition to keep Dynamo ahead, 21-14, early in the second quarter. Ignacio De Miguel and Yuri Vasiliev traded free throws, but Unicaja continued finding it difficult to score. Fotsis took over with a reverse layup while Dean and Sergey Bykov added a consecutive layup-plus-free throws to cap a 10-0 Dynamo run that put the hosts in charge of the game. Santiago scored in the middle but Dean matched it with a long two-pointer, good for a 34-19 Dynamo margin. Pepe Sanchez found his first points from the free throw line, as Unicaja tried a zone defense that Popovic punished with a triple. Then Fotsis added an acrobatic three-point play and hit a jumper to make it an 20-point game, 42-22. Santiago went back to the bench with 4 fouls, as Sanchez and Marcus Faison tried to change things with free throws. Dimitriy Khvostov shined with a put-back layup and even when Faison answered from downtown, Popovic made free throws for a 16-point Dynamo margin, 46-30, at halftime.

After the break, Papadopoulos kept pacing Dynamo with a hook shot that Rodriguez answered from downtown to get Unicaja within 48-33. Popovic and Dmitry Domani stepped up with driving baskets to keep Dynamo ahead, 52-33. Unicaja was not done, however, as Welsch registered a three-point play while Rodriguez and De Miguel added layups. By the time Tusek had a put-back basket, the guests were within 52-42. Dean buried a long two-pointer but Rodriguez and Tusek scored again to make Dynamo call timeout at 54-47. Unicaja was on fire now, as Welsch shined with a fastbreak layup, Rodriguez buried a triple and Cabezas hit a jumper that tied the game, 54-54, after a mammoth 2-21 run. Dean rescued Dynamo with an off-balanced three-point play but Rodriguez got all those points back in one shot from the arc. Eddie Gill hit a driving layup that Welsch matched with free throws. Papadopoulos and Gill combined for 4 quick points, but Tusek followed free throws with a triple to complete the Unicaja comeback, 63-64. Popovic and Cabezas traded free throws before the third quarter ended with Unicaja in charge now, 65-66 after 30 minutes.

Lazaros Papadopoulos - Dynamo MoscowDynamo kept struggling to score early in the fourth quarter, while Cabezas nailed a running jumper for a 65-68 Unicaja edge. Gill made free throws but Marcus Faison replied for Unicaja with a fallaway jumper. Dean hit another triple while Popovic added a driving layup to give Dynamo a 72-70 edge with less than 7 minutes remaining. Unicaja saw its scoring drought stretch to 4 minutes, while after a Dynamo timeout, Popovic and Fotsis returned with killer back-to-back three-pointers for a 78-70 edge. Unicaja called its own timeout with less than 4 minutes left, after which Sanchez buried a corner triple to get the guests within 78-73. Rodriguez added a six-meter shot to make it a three-point game, 78-75. Gill made 1 of 2 foul shots before Tusek got Unicaja even closer, 79-77, with an offensive rebound. Popovic took control then with a layup-plus-free throw, as Dynamo used three non-shooting fouls to keep the clock running down the stretch. Gill sealed the win with free throws, allowing Dynamo to take a share of first place in Group G.

Head Coaches

IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
“It was a very tough game for us. As you probably know, we faced several problems inside the team because of the injuries. It was hard to maintain the tempo and we did it only because of my players’ desire. Unicaja fought till the end – I can only congratulate my colleague with the nice performance of his guys. But we played great too, especially in the first half. I want to thank our fans – Their support helped us a lot. It will be great to see even more people in the crowd in the future. “
SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
“Today’s game had two faces: A good start, but then a shock after Jimenez’s injury. While we were coming to our senses, Dynamo ran far away. When we got back to the game, after the halftime, we showed a completely another level of basketball. Bluntly speaking, we didn’t shay anymore to play and score points. But in the last 3 minutes, we made two fatal mistakes and allowed Dynamo to increase the lead. I am pleased that we managed to cut the difference essentially, but at the same time I am upset with the loss.”

Players

VASILYEV, YURI
Dynamo Moscow
"We won today because of our tough defense and fast breaks. A flaw at the beginning of the third quarter didn't stop us: we struck back with a solid and clever performance in the last minutes. For me, personally, it was difficult to play against Santiago. His four early fouls helped us a lot, though you can't say that remembering the third quarter. Popovic, Papadopoulos and Dean were our great main offensive weapons, but our team defense was an even more important key to the win."
FAISON, MARCUS
Unicaja
"Dynamo got a very big lead at the beginning and it's always very hard to come back after dropping behind by 20 points. Our coach didn't tell us any special words, he only pointed out that he knew we saw the picture of the game ourselves and had to change it. We couldn't play like that anymore. Well, we were able to return to the game but when it all came down to the small details towards the end, they made big plays, and we didn't."
