THE TAKE

Another pivotal game in the race to reach the Quarterfinal Playoffs from Group G takes place in Treviso, Italy on Wednesday, when Benetton welcomes Dynamo Moscow. Benetton is 0-1 after losing at Unicaja in the Top 16 opener, while Dynamo defeated Aris on the road. A new road victory would be like gold for Dynamo, which then would play three of the last four Top 16 games at home in Moscow, where it has won all but one game this season. Dynamo lost Travis Hansen (14.4 ppg.) to injury for the remainder of the season, but found a replacement in Taquan Dean, who had 12 points in his Euroleague debut against Aris last week. Dean joins a star-filled backcourt in which playmakers Eddie Gill (7 ppg., 44.4% 3FG) and Bojan Popovic (10.9 ppg., 1.8 spg.) play major roles, as does team captain Dmitry Domani (6.4 ppg.). With Hansen sidelined, Sergey Monya (4.1 ppg.) and up-and-coming youngster Dimitri Khvostov (3.1 ppg.) are ready to see extended playing time as well. Popovic will have the tough mission to stop Nikos Zisis (10.8 ppg., 4.8 apg.), one of the most resourceful young point guards in Europe. Zisis joins forces with Terrell Lyday (9.5 ppg.) and Marco Mordente (10.7 ppg., 54.5% 3FG) at both guard spots. Domani will have to battle against Preston Shumpert and Benetton captain Matteo Soragna (7.4 ppg.). Benetton will be most concerned in stopping center Lazaros Papadopoulos (15.8 ppg., 6.8 rpg.), who has been unstoppable of late in the post, earning the Euroleague's January MVP award and leading Dynamo against Aris. His perfect complement is Antonis Fotsis (14.3 ppg., 6.3 rpg.), a big man with unlimited range that matches his outstanding athleticism. Obinna Ekezie (7.1 ppg., 67.9% 2FG) will offer experience and rebounds off the Dynamo bench. Benetton is a little undersized in the middle, as Spencer Nelson (9 ppg., 6.9 rpg.) and Marcus Goree (13.8 ppg., 6.5 rpg.) are the usual starting frontcourt. But Goree is a hard-working player ready to face Papadopoulos and to take him outside on offesne, while Angelo Gigli (7 ppg.) and Erazem Lorbek are ready to help at both the center and power forward spots. Dynamo will try to play up-tempo when its safe, and to run its half-court offense through Papadopoulos. Meanwhile, Benetton will have more chances to if it gets Mordente and Nelson involved consistently and maintains enough patience against Dynamo's defense. One way or another, you can expect a showdown of the highest dramatic level in Treviso.

Quotes Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"It's our first game at home in the Top 16, and we need to win this match since that we lost the first one in Malaga. It's also our first game at home in two weeks, so we are excited to play in front of our supporters. I think that Dynamo is the most competitive team in this group, but we will try to do our job at our best to get the win and step up in the standings. The key for this game? They have Lazaros Papadopoulos, one of the rare big men in the Euroleague who can make a great contribution on the boards, and another special player, Fotsis, who has many options on his hands. We will have to make a great effort on defense to stop them and find out smart solutions on the other side of the floor to make it."
IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"We are going away for the second time in only six days, and traveling is never easy. Also, we have some problems with a couple of players, physical problems that have just started, so I don't know who will be ready for the game and in what condition. For this reason, we are traveling again with 13 players. Talking about the game, our opponent, after losing the first Top 16 game by 14 points in Malaga, is obligated to win this one. This can be to our advantage, but of course we must play a good game. Benetton is a very experienced team in the Euroleague, and with the additions of Lorbek and Schumpert is, without doubt, a better team. They won the Italian Cup recently and they have more stability now. Our new player, Dean, passed the first test in Thessaloniki, but now he will have another serious exam against a team that he knows, but the players of Benetton also know him. I expect very tough game, like all of them in the Top 16."

Players

GOREE, MARCUS
Benetton Basket
"It's an important situation for us. In the Top 16, everybody knows the importance of staying undefeated at home. So we will have to win over Dynamo, even if they are a complete team on every part of the floor. Defending well, trying to keep control of the rebounds and imposing our style is the way to put them in trouble. The support of our fans will be important, too, because these kinds of games are the most exciting of the Euroleague season, and we want to get the best from them."
DEAN, TAQUAN
Dynamo Moscow
"There's no doubt that this will be a very hard game for us. Benetton is a dangerous team, especially in its own court, and we must to play great defense if we want to win this game. I am satisfied with my debut in Thessaloniki, but in the last game in the Russian League I missed too many shoots. I need more regularity in my play, but generally I am very happy in Dynamo. I have an opportunity to play the best European competition and this is like a dream, because two weeks ago I was playing only in the Italian League and on a modest team."
Nikos Zisis - Benetton Treviso Benetton stepped strong into the Group G race when it outgunned visiting Dynamo Moscow 74-55 at home in Treviso, Italy on Wednesday. Both teams are now 1-1, behind undefeated Unicaja but ahead of winless Aris TT Bank after one-third of the Top 16. Benetton used its first home game in the round to declare its candidacy as a contender by stopping one of Europe's hottest teams in its tracks. Dynamo had won its previous six in a row and eight of its last nine Euroleague games, but Benetton made things clear early in Treviso, winning the first quarter on Wednesday by a whopping 25-9. Dynamo never got as close as 10 points the rest of the way and could not lower the margin as it wished in the second half. Newcomer Preston Shumpert was the second-half scorer for Benetton and led the winners with 15 points, while Nikos Zisis scored all of his 14 in the first half. Bojan Popovic and Lazaros Papadopoulos finished with 17 each for Dynamo.

Marcus Goree got Benetton on its way with 4 quick points but Antonis Fotsis found room to hit a triple that got Dynamo on the scoreboard at 4-3. Erazem Lorbek scored for Benetton but had the tough task of guarding Papadopoulos and committed 2 fouls in succession, so Goree took over that defensive assignment. Angelo Gigli and Terrell Lyday combined then to cap a 7-0 home run that prompted CSKA head coach Dusan Ivkovic to call timeout at 11-3. Benetton came back and continued flying high as Zizis scored off a great feed by Matteo Soragna. Popovic reacted with a basket in penetration and Papadopoulos added free throws to bring Dynamo within 13-7. After Marco Mordente and Popovic exchanged baskets, however, the guests would not score again in the first quarter. In the meantime, Zizis added 4 points while drawing a pair of fouls on Popovic. Spencer Nelson took over the show now, netting 5 points without reply from Dynamo as Benetton zoomed to the end of a quarter ahead by 25-9.

Bojan Popovic - Dynamo MoscowFotsis started the second half in spectacular fashion, popping a triple from a good 8 meters. Benetton was putting just about every defender in the path of Papadopoulos, but he kept causing trouble underneath. He swished 3 free throws in a row but Zizis matched that with a basket-plus-free throw to keep a 14-point Benetton advantage, 29-15. Fotsis ended a two-minute scoring drought with a spectacular alley-oop for Dynamo, but Zizis again connected from beyond the arc. Both team were having problems unlocking their basketball and Benetton head coach David Blatt took a timeout to resolve the issue at 35-19. Popovic returned and did not miss any of 4 free throw attempts but Goree eventually got Benetton back on track offensively. Bryant Smith arrived to help Benetton with a triple, but Taquan Dean replied quickly for Dynamo to fix the halftime score at 42-27.

Benetton got off to a good start in the second half as Nelson and Terrell Lyday scored to make it 45-27. Popovic and Papadopoulos combined for a fast 0-6 Dynamo to show that the visitors still had intentions of coming back. Papadopoulos was now unstoppable but Goree hit the three-pointer that kept the crowd going and the lead in double digits, at 50-37. Shumpert made his presence felt now by tallying 4 points and fighting hard. The game was getting tougher, too, as Lorbek responded to Dmitry Khvostov with the score at 54-39. Dynamo took another timeout, but with little effect as Gigli drained a three-point bomb. As the seconds ticked away, Mordente stripped Obinna Ekezie of the ball and drew a foul, swishing the 2 free throws to keep Benetton firmly in front, 59-41 after 30 minutes.

Preston Shumpert - Benetton TrevisoDynamo had a mountain to climb in the final quarter, but Benetton cleverly kept control of the ball until Shumpert got his team over the 20-point margin, 62-41, with a shot from downtown. Shumpert stole and scored again, firing up the crowd. When Lorbek scored a put-back, there was no sign of a comeback from Dnyamo, which took another timeout with the scoreboard showing 67-43. There was no secret of to whom the victory was going now, but the point difference for the round continued to be crucial for both teams. A Papadopoulos hook was met by a long jumper from Soragna. Popovic scored to reduced the gap to 19 and Papadopoulos continued playing physical inside to get more some points at the foul line. Shumpert, who had a great second half, regained the 20-point margin from beyond the arc as Benetton made sure that its first Top 16 victory came with plenty cushion in the bank and no worries about point difference.

Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
“I think Benetton played a great game tonight. Unfortunately this win does not mean anything apart from maybe one night of happiness. Tomorrow, we’re getting back to worrying about the next game.”
IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
“It has been a really bad night for us. Benetton totally deserved to get the win. Obviously our problem tonight was on offence. We played two games on the road in six days after the trip in Greece and that is not easy to start the Top 16 this way. However we will be ready next week to face Unicaja Malaga.”

Players

NELSON, SPENCER
Benetton Basket
“We played really good basketball tonight and after losing by quite a few points last week in Spain it was important to get a good margin. I know Benetton got eliminated because of basket average last year, so obviously our coach insisted on keeping the pressure on till the end even though we had a 20-point margin.”
POPOVIC, BOJAN
Dynamo Moscow
“I think they played very good basketball tonight while we had a bad game on offence, so we’ll have to work on that. This is going to be a very tight group with six games in quick successions, so we’ll have to concentrate and think about the next game.”
