THE TAKE

Two classic Euroleague teams will meet again in Zagreb, Croatia, when Cibona hosts Montepaschi Siena in Group A on Wednesday evening. The two teams meet again for the first time since last year's Top 16, in which Cibona and Montepaschi split home wins. Cibona underwent severe roster changes over the summer, while Montepaschi managed to keep most of its core players for yet another season. Cibona has a new backcourt duo in Jamont Gordon and Antonio Graves, who offer the kind of athleticism and talent to match head coach Velimir Perasovic's up-tempo game. Goran Vrbanc and Vedran Princ are ready to provide intensity, defense and hustle off the bench. Graves will have the tough mission to stop two-time All-Euroleague playmaker Terrell McIntyre, a true floor general with unlimited range and incredible court vision. Montepaschi is deep at point guard, with Euroleague champion Nikos Zisis and up-and-coming playmaker Lorenzo D'Ercole. Henry Domercant is set to test his shooting skills against Gordon while Marco Carrareto is a blue-collar guard ready to play strong defense against anyone. Montepaschi relies on David Hawkins and Romain Sato to share minutes on the floor at the wings. Hawkins is an explosive swingman able to guard anyone, while Sato has a well-rounded game enhanced by his athleticism and quickness. Cibona relies on Marin Rozic to stop Sato and has enormous talent at small forward with Marko Tomas and Bojan Bogdanovic. Montepaschi has an advantage in the paint because Shaun Stonerook, Ben Eze, Ksistof Lavrinovic and Tomas Ress have been playing together for two years already. Veteran center Denis Marconato joins Montepaschi to provide mid-range jumpers, rebounds and experience. Lavrinovic has a tough test against Dalibor Bagaric, a powerful, experienced big guy. Luksa Andric and Vedran Vukusic will try to open the defense with their shooting range, while youngsters Tomislav Zubcic and Leon Radosevic are seeing extended playing time so far this season and could a factor in this game. Montepaschi must be its usual self, with aggressive defense and a very fluid offense, looking for the extra pass. Cibona must slow down the game tempo and get Tomas and Gordon involved towin the game. Expect a tough battle at the Drazen Petrovic Basketball Center.

Quotes Head Coaches

PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"We are quite aware that we could easily start this Euroleague season with three defeats because of a really tough schedule, but we will certainly do everything we can to avoid that. Montepaschi looks like a well-tuned machine, and in my opinion it is the strongest team in Europe at the moment – side by side with Regal Barcelona. They have played the same game for many years and get stronger each year. We have to work hard for 40 minutes and must not relax for a single second of the game."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"To win games on the road is always very difficult in the Euroleague, especially when you play in a court full of tradition like the Drazen Petrovic Arena. Our season is scheduled in the beginning with three games on the road in the first four weeks, so in any case we have to start winning some games on the road, so we must be ready to do so from the first one. Cibona is a very good team which last season started with four wins in a row to lead their group in the first round. Now they are in a good shape, too, after a good preseason. But we are ready also, so I think it will be a great game for Euroleague fans."

Players

ROZIC, MARIN
Cibona
"The key is the defense and we must stop their counter-attack. Kaukenas left, but they brought in two very good players at his position, so Siena is even stronger. Anyway, we are always dangerous on our home court, and I hope that our fans will carry us to the first big victory of the season."
HAWKINS, DAVID
Montepaschi Siena
"I expect it to be a though game. It is our first game in Euroleague and we want to send a message by playing hard, with a lot of concentration and aggressiveness. If we do everything we have practiced, we'll have good chance to win this game. A difficult start? We didn't want an easy one. I think with the team we have, with the coach we have and how we prepare the game, we have everything to take it, to be victorious on the road and at home."
Ksistof Lavrinovic - Montepaschi SienaWith record-setting defense, Montepaschi Siena sent a message of intended dominance to Group A as it opened the regular season by crushing Cibona 40-85 on the road in Zagreb. The defensive effort of Montepaschi head coach Simone Pianigiani’s squad was so complete that it made the history books. No home team has ever been held to a lower offensive output in the Euroleague as Cibona was on Wednesday. The previous record for the lowest score by a home team was 48, held by Lietuvos Rytas. Cibona's meager point total also ties Kinder Bologna for the third.lowest by any team in Euroleague history (the lowest score all-time is 35 points by Krka Novo Meso). Montepaschi controlled the game in the first half and then blew it wide open in the second on the strength of an 8-32 third quarter. The key was defense, defense, and more defense. Montepaschi forced Cibona into 27 turnovers and a 3-for-25 nightmare from beyond the arc. Ksistof Lavrinovic paced the blowout, a game-high 26 points, making 4 of 5 three-pointers. All-Euroleague point guard Terrell McIntrye dished out 11 assists; Romain Sato added 14 points, while Benjamin Eze and David Hawkins chipped in 8 points each. Only one Cibona player scored more than five points, Marko Tomas, who ended up with 12.

Eze got the scoring going with a dunk off a pass from Hawkins to spark a 0-8 Montepaschi run that opened the game The home team finally got on the board with a post move for 2 points by Bojan Bogdanovic. The Cibona forward continued to bang away on the inside for 4 more quick points, and a strong drive plus foul by Jamont Gordon tied the game at 10-10. The score stayed knotted till Hawkins threaded a pass to a streaking Eze for a layup. Shaun Stonerook drained a three-pointer from the wing to start a 2-9 run for Montepaschi. That included three points from Lavrinovic, while Cibona stayed cold from the field. Tomas hit 2 free throws to stop the bleeding, but the quarter ended 14-21 for the visitors as Montepaschi had already tallied an assist for each of its seven baskets.

Marko Tomas - CibonaNikos Zisis scored on a fastbreak off a nice pass by Lavrinovic to start the second quarter. Cibona continued to struggle and Lavrinovic drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key to break the ten-point barrier, 15-26. Cibona, sensing the game could get away, stepped up their defense. Tomas hit 2 free throws, and Tomislav Zubcic a three-pointer to pull Cibona back to within 20-26, forcing a Montepaschi timeout. Out of the stoppage of play, Tomas put back his own miss, but Marco Carraretto sank an open three-pointer off a mini-break. The game turned into a defensive fight for both teams until Lavrinovic notched foul shots and then drained another triple from the top of the arc to give the visitors a 22-34 lead. Montepaschi forced Cibona into its second backcourt violation of the quarter before Tomas drove in for a finger-roll, but McIntrye's free throw sent Montepaschi into the break ahead 24-35.

Sato hit 4 straight free throws and Hawkins banged home a layup off the break for the first 6 points of the second half, forcing a Cibona timeout. The discussion did not help as Cibona gave the ball up again, Hawkins hit 2 more from the line, and McIntyre dropped a bomb from long-range. Tomas made free throws, but it was not the break Cibona was looking for. Instead, Hawkins fed Sato for an easy layup and Eze swished a turnaround jumper from the baseline. Luksa Andric finally got Cibona on the board in the half with two freebies, but Lavrinovic nailed another three, and a steal converted into two easy points by Henry Domercant put the score at 28-55. Cibona head coach Velimir Perasovic called for time, but nothing could stem the Montepaschi tide. Sato stole the ball again and slammed it home one-handed before his free throws marked a 31-point lead, 28-59. Cibona, completely frazzled, in-bounded the ball directly to Sato under his own basket for an easy slam. Marin Rozic made free throws then, but the home fans were in no mood for clapping as Montepaschi ended the quarter ahead by 32-67.

With both teams knowing the game had long been decided, the fourth quarter was played at a slower pace, but that did not stop Montepaschi from extending its lead. Zisis scored on a drive to break the seventy-point mark at 37-71, and Lavrinovic hit his fourth three-pointer from the wing. Tomas finally got a triple to fall, but Lavrinovic worked in the paint to push the score to 40-78. To put the final touch on a great team performance, Denis Marconato came off the bench to score the basket that doubled the score at 40-80. With Cibona's resistence long gone, Domercant nailed a triple and Zisis free throws to finish Montepaschi's breathtaking, season-opening road win.

Head Coaches

PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"I am sorry because of the way we lost the game, for our fans who expected us to play tougher against a team like Montepaschi. We are embarrassed by the way we played. We played solid in the first half, and if we had hit some open three-pointers we would have been in the game. In the beginning of the second half we lost three or four balls, they made a 11-0 run in the first two minutes and the rest of the way we just wanted the game to be over. I was embarrassed, and we can only promise our fans that we are going to fight till the end in the games to come."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"I am very satisfied because my team approached the game in the right way. We wanted to pressure the ball and get in the passing lanes of Cibona. That turned out to be key to the game because from the very beginning we were able to get easy baskets. At halftime we did not have the advantage we should have given our defense effort. But in the second half we broke away in the score and killed the Cibona’s confidence. At that point the game was finished. This is the first time I have ever won at Cibona. I lost last year and as an assistant coach before, so this arena is a great place to get a victory."

Players

TOMAS, MARKO
Cibona
"It is an embarrassing lost. We fought in the first half. We were down by eleven even though we missed all but one of our outside shots. But in the second half we gave up after only ninety seconds. It does not matter that we lost by 30, 40 or 50, but the saddest thing is that we gave up. Starting with me and all the way to the youngest player on our team."
LAVRINOVIC, KSISTOF
Montepaschi Siena
"Last year we wanted to make the Final Four, but I got injured. Our goal is to try again and make it this season. We are extremely motivated, and I think we have a good chance if we can stay healthy. Going into the game I thought Cibona would play a lot better, but they played tough for only one quarter. We shot our three-pointers well, played great defense and got out quick on the fastbreak."
MCINTYRE, TERRELL
Montepaschi Siena
"It was a great win road win for us. The third quarter was the key, we stepped up on defense and set the tone for the rest of the game. We had last year’s loss in the back of our minds, even though we knew they have a different team from last season. We prepared well for the game and it showed in the second half. We did not expect it to be this easy, though. You never expect it to be this easy on the road in the Euroleague. But, this is just one game. It’s a long road."
