THE TAKE

The Artland Dragons make their ULEB Cup debut Tuesday when they host Pau-Orthez. Chris Fleming's Dragons are led by newcomers Terrance Thomas, Adam Chubb and Matt Freije along with Lamont McIntosh, who helped the club make a surprising run to the German League finals last season. The start of the ULEB Cup comes at a perfect time for the Dragons, who have started the season on fire. Pau-Orthez, on the other hand, has struggled at times this season. Despite a good balance from the likes of David Young, Curtis Withers and Terence Dials, the club has yet to really take to new coach Olivier Cousin. But if that happens soon, the classic French club has the potential to go places.

The Artland Dragons started their ULEB Cup campaign on a high note with an 85-74 win over Pau-Orthez on Tuesday evening. Team captain Lamont McIntosh led five Dragons scorers in double figures with 14 points as the club joined ASK Riga and BC Kyiv for a share of first place in Group H. The Dragons visit Lukoil Academic next week, while Pau-Orthez hosts Benetton Treviso. The game was close for the first 30 minutes, but the Dragons started the fourth quarter with a 12-2 run, giving them a 15-point lead from which Pau never recovered. John Goldsberry drilled 4 three-pointers for 12 points, dished 4 assists and picked up 5 steals for Artland, Darius Hall came off the bench for 12 points, Matt Freije added 11 and E.J. Rowland had 10. Terence Dials had 17 points and 8 rebounds to lead Pau, David Young and Thierry Rupert added 16 points apiece, Shaun Fein scored 10 and Xane D'Almeida dished 7 assists in defeat.

The Dragons came out shooting, starting the game with a Freije triple and an Adam Chubb basket for an early 5-1 lead. Pau's first baskets were back-to-back three-pointers from Fein and Young as the visitors took control. McIntosh joined the three-point party as the lead started to sway back and forth. Fein capped the first period with another triple for a 17-20 Orthez advantage. It seemed that the hosts shook the nerves of their European debut by the second period when Freije and Hall heated up for the hosts and led the Dragons to a 38-35 halftime advantage. Pau remained in the picture after the break, with Rupert leading the visitors as they surged to a 40-44 advantage. However Dragons captain McIntosh got his team going and threes by Terrance Thomas and Goldsberry made it 56-51 heading into the fourth quarter. The hosts saved the best for last, starting the last period on a 12-2 surge for a 15-point lead that would be too much for Pau to recover from. The last few minutes were uneventful as the visiting team seemed resigned to the loss and the Dragons celebrated the win with their fans.

Head Coaches

FLEMING, CHRIS
Artland Dragons
"We are very happy that we started so well in our first ULEB Cup season. Pau-Orthez is a team with a great basketball history. It was an advantage for us, that Pau-Orthez has some problems in their domestic league, so our nervousness was not so bad. We were very nervous through the first three quarters but then got adjusted to the condition, especially the referees. Darius Hall gave us a lot of energy today, without him we would not have won the game."

"I hurt my knee this week, but I didn’t want the fans to recognize so I put all this energy in my game. I didn’t expect to play, but now I am really happy because I was a part of the first victory of the Dragons in European history. We won because we had more energy and more confidence."
RUPERT, THIERRY
Pau-Orthez
"We are still missing our point guard Max Stanic and it is very hard for the young players to make it up for him. When the Dragons started to hit the shots the game became even harder for us. When they got ten points ahead in the third quarter the game was lost for us."
