THE TAKE

Olympiacos will aim to stay perfect in Group A when it hosts Prokom Trefl Sopt at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece, on Thursday. The Reds (2-0) are coming off a big road win at Climamio Bologna in which Henry Domercant matched his career-high with 29 points. Prokom (1-1) edged Le Mans by a basket at home as Christian Dalmau poured in 16. Thursday's game marks the third straight season these teams will meet each other, with the series record tied at 2-2. Both teams won their games at home last season. With its revved-up style under coach Pini Gershon, Olympiacos leads the Euroleague in scoring (95 ppg.) and in rebounding (47 rpg.), the latter by more than 8 boards per game. Domercant (24 ppg.) is the league's top scorer, Scoonie Penn the best passer (6.5 apg.) and Alex Acker (10.5 rpg.) is second in rebounds. Prokom features a number of experienced players who surely won't be intimidated by those statistics. Center Huseyin Besok is the heart of a big Prokom frontline that also features Michael Andersen and Adam Wojcik. They'll need to contend with Ryan Stack, Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Andrija Zizic. Prokom forwards Tomas Masiulis (10 rpg.), Jasmin Hukic and shooter Donatas Slanina and guards Dalmau, Justin Hamilton and Rasheed Atkins will also be tested by the Reds' rotation, which includes Penn, Damir Mulaomerovic and Jerry McNamara at guard, swingmen Acker and Domercant and forward Panagiotis Vasilopoulos. The two players carrying the most on their shoulders for Prokom are Besok and Hamilton. The bug guy will need to be at his best on both sides of the floor and on the glass - while avoiding fouls - to protect his team's chances. Hamilton, playing a lot while playmaker Tomas Pacesas is sidelined, must slow Penn and the game's tempo to minimize Olympiacos's transition points. The numbers Olympiacos has posted make it the clear favorite, especially at home, since Prokom has lost six straight road games in the Euroleague dating back to November 2005. But the Polish champs will surely be ready, especially Wojcik, who will remember posting a double-double when Prokom won at Olympiacos two years ago, proving that any outcome is possible on Thursday.

Quotes Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"Prokom is a really tough team that likes a physical game. They play good defense and they try to establish a low-tempo game. So the secret for us is not to allow them to play their game and establish our rhythm. Our two wins in the Euroleague so far mean nothing. Thursday's game is totally different than the previous two. It has its own characteristics and distinctiveness. Prokom is a hungry team, which comes to our home court without any kind of pressure. I am sure that our gym will be full again and that our fans' push will lead us to the accomplishment of our goal, which is a third win in a row."
KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"Olympiacos is extremely strong team. I remember the games against them in recent years, but their team then wasn't as strong as it is today. Their offseason transfers have made an impact and show that the club has very big aspirations. They've proved themselves so far by winning both their games. We know that it will be very hard to win in Piraeus, but I hope it's possible. The key is on defense, and if we don't want to lose, we have to stop their fastbreak."

Players

ACKER, ALEX
Olympiacos
"Actually I don't know many things about our opponents, except what we saw on video. What I realized is that they play really good defense and, as I was told, Prokom has had a tough team during the last two years. That means the game against them is not going to be easy. We have started the Euroleague with two wins and we want to go on like this. I believe that if the atmosphere is the same as in the game against Tau Ceramica, we will get what we want. As for my performances so far, I am satisfied since my team plays quality basketball and keeps on winning. I don't care if I have the first role. For me the most important thing is to help my team get as many 'Ws' as possible. "
HAMILTON, JUSTIN
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"It will be a very tough game. I've always said that Olympiacos and Tau Ceramica are the strongest teams in our group. Beating a Greek team at its own gym will be very tough. They have a good team and many fans who create a special atmosphere. However, I think we can win. We have to limit our mistakes and fight all night on the defensive end. But I believe we can do it."
Nikos Zizic - Olympiacos Olympiacos thrashed visiting Prokom Trefl Sopot by 97-74 in Pireaus, Greece on Thursday to take over sole possession of first place in Group A and stay on the short list of undefeated teams in the Euroleague after three weeks. The Reds now lead their group at 3-0, while Prokom finds itself at 1-2. Inside dominance marked the game from the outset, and soon Olympiacos was nursing and adding to double-digit leads that were never threatened the rest of the way. Andrija Zizic led five Olympiacos scorers with 22 points in just 24 minutes on the floor. Alex Acker added 14 points, Scoonie Penn and Sofoklis Schortsianitis 12 each, while Ryan Stack had 11 and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Prokom's scoring came mostly on the perimeter, where Donatas Slanina drilled 19 points, Justin Hamilton 15 and Christian Dalmau 11.

Prokom's backcourt started the game hot as Rasheed Atkins first drove to the basket and then chipped in a triple, while Hamilton nailed a jumper for an early 2-7 scoreboard. Olympiacos answered back by feeding Zizic and Stack inside to get within 8-9. When Stack connected from behind the arc too, and seconds later dished to Zizic in a high-low set, the Reds were ahead 13-9. Henry Domercant came off the bench to pop a three-pointer on his first touch as Prokom ran out of open opportunities and could not follow Olympiacos in transition to defense. Penn, Domercant and Zizic fired the Reds ahead 22-12, and Schortsianitis made his presence evident with a basket. Slanina stepped up for Prokom with free throws and a corner triple as the first quarter ended 26-17.

Donatas Slanina - Prokom TreflAt the start of the second quarter, Panagiotis Vassilopoulos scored 5 points in a row on a triple-dunk combination but Dalmau was there for Prokom to nail a three-pointer. When Alex Acker found consecutive lay ups, Olympiacos built its biggest lead yet, 35-22. Adam Wojcik scored from the arc for Prokom, but Olympiacos remained in charge, scoring 7 more unanswered points punctuated by Acker’s triple at 42-25. Penn made his team's fifth triple so far while Prokom settles for free throws by Slanina and Huseyin Besok. These two proved the go-to guys for Prokom in that time as they combined on 8 points to make it 45-36. Although Prokom's defense had strengthened some, the Reds had the last word before halftime with a 7-2 run that featured a buzzer-beating layup by Christos Charissis that made it 52-39 at the break.

Hamilton nailed a triple from downtown to open the second half, but Acker’s sixth assist sent Zizic for an impressive tomahawk dunk that made it 55-42. Atkins chipped in another three-pointer for Prokom, but Olympiacos still found it easy to score, whether passing inside, penetrating or shooting from outside. Domercant, Zizic and Acker sparked a 8-0 blast that forged a 20-point-difference, 65-45, after 25 minutes. Hamilton reacted for the guests, but Stack, Zizic and Acker, with a triple, pushed the difference to 72-48. As Prokom seemed to stop pushing now, Schortsianitis pushed the Reds ahead 77-50 with 5 points of his own. Prokom was suffering on both sides of the floor, but Hamilton's late basket fixed a 77-52 scoreboard after three quarters.

Both teams started the final quarter knowing that that the outcome was decided. Schortsianitis's dominance in the paint remained obvious at 79-53, but perimeter shots now fell easily for Prokom. Dalmau scored three times and Wojcik and added a in a 0-10 Prokom run that made it 79-63, but Schortsianitis answered with consecutive layups before the Olympiacos reserves came on the floor. Manolis Papamakarios nailed a jumper and a corner triple to make it 90-66. Slanina, after having scored 15 in the first half, added his first points of the second, but he and his teammates were too late for a final buzzer that left Olympiacos an easy 97-74 winner.

Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"There are no easy games, you make them easy. It wasn't a great game, but as long as we won everything, it's OK. It's not easy to play 40 minutes at the same level. We have weaknesses and we need to work on them. But, we have to take it step by step. It's difficult to dish no-look assists, unless your name is Alex Acker. But, we shouldn't get enthusiastic. By this time we need experience on court and that's why I use Charissis and Papamakarios to come from the bench."
KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"I would like to congradulate Olympiacos. They played much better tonight. They confirmed that this year they belong to the top teams of the Euroleague. We learned a good lesson tonight and this game helped us to make some very useful conclusions. There is nothing else to say about the game. Olympiacos played way too better than we did."

Players

ZIZIC, ANDRIJA
Olympiacos
"Don’t think that this win was easy. Every game in the Euroleague is difficult and every win is important. We controlled the tempo of the game and found solutions on the offensive end. I do whatever the coach orders and this year the coach wants me to get involved much offensively. We have to play two consecutive away games now and I hope that we will continue like that."
SCHORTSANITIS, SOFOKLIS
Olympiacos
"We keep improving our team chemistry. This year we are way much stronger. We have many offensive options and that gives us strength. Our defense helps us to find open opportunities on offense and get easy baskets on the fast break. When we play home we have an extra advantage; our fans that always make things easier for us. We lost twice at home to Panathinaikos; I think that this made us stronger and now our goal is never lose again in our arena."
DALMAU, CHRISTIAN
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We were mentally not ready for this game tonight. When you face such a great team like Olympiacos, you have to give your best. We did not manage to stay in the game. They played really great basketball and we had to play as well too in order to be competitive. But, we weren’t able to do that. We had problems in defense and did not execute well in offense."
SLANINA, DONATAS
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We were not mentally prepared for this game. We proved too soft, we didn’t fight until the end. We played terrible defense. The most important thing is that we did not use our strengths and allowed Olympiacos play their game. They played much better and we could not follow."
