THE TAKE

A high-profile showdown is set to take place in Group A on Thursday, when Unicaja welcomes Cibona in Malaga, Spain on Thursday. Unicaja hopes to break its two-game losing streak in front of its fans at Martin Carpena Arena, where it has won 19 consecutive Euroleague games dating back to December 2006. Meanwhile, Cibona is the Group A leader at 3-0 and wants to carry on beating the expectations. Unicaja is still battling injuries, as Berni Rodriguez, Alfonso Sanchez and German Gabriel are still sidelined while center Boniface Ndong did not practice on Tuesday and is doubtful for the game against Cibona. If Ndong is unable to play, athletic forward Marcus Haislip and centers Robert Archibald and Vitor Faverani will see extended playing time. Carlos Jimenez may also see some minutes at power forward. Archibald will have the tough mission to guard Nikola Prkacin, who has been unstoppable lately. Jared Homan and Vedran Vukusic are ready to face Haislip, a natural-born mismatch due to his athleticism, deep range and speed. Luksa Andric will step off the Cibona bench to offer intensity and the occasional three-pointer. It will be a very special game for Davor Kus, back in Malaga to face Unicaja for the first time since playing for them last season. Kus and Rawle Marshall have been the heart and soul of Cibona in recent games. Marin Rozic and Branimir Longin are experienced, talented players ready to help at both wings. Kus will test his scoring skills against Joseph Gomis, while Thomas Kelati and Jiri Welsch will be key players in this game, not only for what they can contribute in offense, but also to stop Marshall. The point guard battle will be equally interesting, especially since Earl Calloway led Cibona to down Olympiacos last week. Calloway put out a show with his court sense, clutch and driving skills. Vedran Princ backs him up off the Cibona bench. Calloway will not have it easy against experienced point guard Carlos Cabezas, right at the prime of his career. Omar Cook offers passing skills, clutch and determination off the bench. Unicaja needs to play at its usual level in defense and to stop Marshall and Calloway, who were just unstoppable against Olympiacos. Cibona has been outstanding on defense lately, so expect an intense, hard-fought battle at Martin Carpena Arena this week.

GAME QUOTES

Unicaja
  • Swingman Jiri Welsch needs just 3 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
Cibona
  • Cibona is off to its best start in over a decade. Cibona had not won its first three games in the top European competition since the 1996-97 season, when it topped Estudiantes, Spirou Charleroi and Alba Berlin for a 3-0 record.
  • Guard Davor Kus returns to Malaga after playing for Unicaja last season.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"First of all we have to recover Boniface Ndong, who is having some problems with his leg. We also have to recover from the four road games we just had, which I think could have affected us by the fact of not having our crowd by our side. Now we are welcoming a great Cibona in this Euroleague, they have won three games and we have already lost one. It will be a challenging game because our goal has to be the Top 16 and right now it is a little far away. We have to find our best game again, which we lost in these last couple of games due to injuries of players like Kelati and Jimenez, and also because of playing so many road games in a row."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"This is the arena where I lost the title when I was Tau Ceramica coach, but the following year I also won there. We are talking about really special atmosphere and the city that loves and lives for basketball. I think that Unicaja is some kind of dark horse this year for winning the Euroleague, and that they are going to put us on the biggest test so far. That does not mean that we are going there to surrender, but it is going to be extremely difficult."

Players

CABEZAS, CARLOS
Unicaja
"We have to be mentally strong. Now it is a crucial moment in the Euroleague to look towards the Top 16, but I still think that we only depend on ourselves. The next game is against Cibona, a tough rivalk which has not lost a game. We have to win no matter what and after that, try to rest as much as possible for anothertough one this weekend against Pamesa Valencia. We had a lot of road games and this year, the difference can be in winning those kind of games. Cibona is a solid team which know each other very well and results tell us that story, too. They have beaten strong teams like Olympiacos and Maccabi."
TROHA, ROBERT
Cibona
"I know that Unicaja lost two in a row, against Avellino and Gran Canaria, so this will be a really important game for them. Coach Perasovic knows Spanish basketball well and I know that we are going to be prepared for everything in Malaga. If we play our defense on the level we played against Olympiacos and Crvena zvezda, anything is possible."
Boniface Ndong - UnicajaUnicaja is back on the winning track in Group A after its 77-67 triumph at home in Malaga, Spain on Thursday ended Cibona Zagreb's three-game undefeated start to the season. With this win Unicaja climbs to a 2-2 record, with two home wins versus two road losses. It was Cibona first loss in Group C, though its 3-1 record still keeps it on top of the group. Boniface Ndong led the winners with 18 points, most of them in rim shaking dunks, in addition to 8 rebounds. Carlos Cabezas woke up with 14 points, Thomas Kelati added 13 while Carlos Jimenez and Robert Archibald had 10 each. Rawle Marshall kept Cibona in the game for long minutes with 25 points and no less than seven baskets from long distance in 10 attempts. Earl Calloway added 11. Cibona took a 20-21 lead early in the second quarter after Robert Troha hit the only three pointer of the night scored for Cibona not by Marshall, but a 16-3 run of Unicaja led by Ndong and Jimenez put the locals on top, and from there until the buzzer Aaito's team kept the lead safe. Cibona came as close as five points behind in the deciding quarter, but didn't find the way to make the difference and stay perfect.

Cibona won the tip off, but saw a very active Archibald who blocked Rozic on the first shot attempt and scored four in a row with post moves on the other side. Davor Kus showed his familiarity with the rims with a tough jumper, and then a lay-up, while at the other side Jiri Welsch picked two offensive boards, dished an assist and scored an off dribble mid-range jumper, as the teams were tied at 6-6. Kelati and Marshall exchanged the first three pointers of the night to create a 9-9 tie, before Kelati and Cabezas combined four points in a row as Unicaja pressured full court only to see Marshall break the press and soon after add a huge long range three pointer to set the score on 15-14. Ndong came off the bench and with four points in a row set the first quarter score on 19-16.

Rawle Marshall - CibonaTroha had a great start for the second quarter with a crazy hook and then a three pointer, the only one by Cibona that Marshall didn't score, to give his team a 20-21 lead, but Jimenez answered from distance at the other side and dished Ndong a big assist on the fast break to see the center finish with a big slam. Cibona called for the first time out to stop the run, but Jimenez nailed a three ball from the other side, to make it 28-21. After big pressure on defense Cibona didn't find a chance to shot in 24 seconds, before Marshall finally broke the drought with another long distance hit. Both sides lost their rhythm, before Ndong stepped up. First he displayed his wingspan with a big offensive rebound on the way to another rim rocking dunk, followed by a mid-range jumper and finally finished a fast break with a lay-up to send Cibona to another time out, this time down 36-24. Calloway scored his first points after an offensive board, but Ndong dunked again to reach 15 first half points off an assist by Welsch on the way to a 40-26 local lead. Marshall missed two tough shots in a row, but Cibona's quick hands on defense forced turnovers, and denied Unicaja to get any further. Calloway finally broke three minutes of bareness with points from the line, but saw Cabezas quickly answer on the other end to finish the first half up 42-28.

Cibona started the second half with six points in a row, exploiting long range misses by the locals. A time out by Aaito was followed by two fast break lay ups by Cabezas, to make it a double-digit game once again, 46-34. Cibona turned the ball over too often and saw good ball movement by Unicaja, that finished with an open three hit by Kelati, 49-38 after five minutes in the third. Kelati added another jumper from the same spot and his next attempt danced around the rim to give Cibona some hope. Marshall hit twice in a row three pointers in front of the rim to keep his team alive just seven points behind, and soon it was just a five point game, but Omar Cook hit an incredible buzzer-beater from eight meters to enter the deciding quarter still with an eight point lead, 56-48.

Vedran Vukusic with a highlight behind the head assist allowed Jared Homan to make it 56-50 but a back door play right on the other side of court saw Kelati dish to Jimenez a pass for an easy lay up. Marshall nailed his fifth hit from long range, once again with a hand in his face, and the gap was five. Archibald connected four in a row, but an unsportsmanlike foul on Cook stopped the momentum. The Scottish big guy was still there to add another block, and use big defense of Jimenez on Marshall to add a steal and two points at the other side, before taking the bench with Unicaja up 64-55. Cibona tried to move closer with shots from long range but saw Unicaja expressing in fast breaks. Nevertheless, the visitors still fought for every ball, and Calloway took control with five points in a row to set the difference on 67-60 with three minutes to play. Ndong resumed his dunk action after a pick-and-roll but Marshall scored from the far corner to keep hopes ali ve, but not for long. Cibona was looking for a stop on defense but couldn't find it, and after Cook scored two lay ups in a row, it was time to seal the deal.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"We started and finished the game with a great mentality. Apparently, it was good for Boni Ndong not to practice in the last couple of days, because he played really well in the first halt. Robert Archibald also played a good game, especially if you consider that he couldn't even move this morning. We missed too many free throws in the third quarter, maybe because of the pressure to win the game. Omar Cook played with the confidence that we hope he keeps finding each and every day. I am happy because it was a difficult game. We have to carry on winning at home and see what we can do on the road."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"Unicaja rolled in the second quarter and managed to get an important lead. We had controlled the game until that moment, but were not able to stop their aggressive game in five key minutes. Ndong hurt us a lot in the key moment. Unicaja is a fair winner. I like their team a lot, as I had already seen them in their previous game. It is an athletic team, the way Aito likes it, very aggressive with committed players. It will be a very tough team to beat."

Players

JIMENEZ, CARLOS
Unicaja
"We knew how important this game was. The key was being able to stay focused and to take things as they came. It was crucial to be ourselves again on defense. I am satisfied not only for this win, but also for being able to play defense with the right attitude."
CABEZAS, CARLOS
Unicaja
"It was a very important win for us, as we were able to step up against the group leader. We have been playing better, the team bounced back from recent losses. We played well and focused at both ends. Every game is a whole different story, we know which mistakes we made and we played much better tonight."
KUS, DAVOR
Cibona
"Playing again in Martin Carpena was very special for me. We had a good start, but decreased our level in the second quarter. It is difficult to beat Unicaja in Malaga playing like we did in the second quarter. We have to carry on playing hard, but with higher intensity."
