THE TAKE

Unics Kazan looks to avoid dropping to 0-2 in Last 16 Group J as it hosts Turk Telekom. Head coach Aco Petrovic's Unics dropped its opener on the road, 68-66, at Benetton for its first loss of the Eurocup competition. The Russian club had a chance to win the game in the last seconds, but guard Marko Popovic missed a three-pointer. Kazan did not however just lose the game in the final seconds. Petrovic's team made just 5 of 13 (38%) three-pointers, committed 22 turnovers and hit just 9 of 13 (69%) free throws. Center Kresimir Loncar came off the bench for 18 points and center Dmitry Sokolov added 9 points and 8 rebounds. Starting forward Igor Zamanskiy and center Vladimir Veremeenko combined for 14 points and 14 rebounds, but they also struggled mightily with the quick Benetton defenders and committed 13 turnovers. Not having guard Terrell Lyday or forward Tariq Kirksay available did not help Kazan's cause. But Petrovic must have his guards get the team's big players into better position to handle the ball. Things will be much better if Lyday and Kirksay can play. If not, expect Petrovic to come up with some different tactics to switch the team's focus. Turk Telekom can jump to 2-0 with a road victory after head coach Ercument Sunter's Turkish club knocked off Zadar 89-82 at home in its opener. Telekom struggled from long range, hitting just 5 of 20 (25%) three-pointers, and got outrebounded 40-30 at home. But Sunter's men turned the ball over just 10 times, while grabbing 12 offensive rebounds and making 16 of 19 (84%) free throws. Sunter got his usual balanced production as all five starters scored in double digits, led by forward Michael Wright's 23 points. Center Erwin Dudley collected 16 points and 8 rebounds - 6 of them offensive - while guard Serkan Erdogan tallied 14 points - nearly 6 more than his average in the Regular Season. Sunter got even more production from his bench as forward Kennedy Winston had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists and guard Tutku Acik chipped in 3 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Sunter knows if his team can take care of the ball like it did against Zadar, it will have a real chance to grab a road victory.

Quotes Head Coaches

PETROVIC, ACO
Unics
"Turk Telekom is a very good team, very difficult to play against. I know this team very well. As far as I know, its characteristic feature is that it keeps the opponents sustained the whole game long, giving no chance to relax. The tempo of the game is usually very speedy. The players are capable at shooting out of the paint, they have good centers. We met the Turkish team last season, and I think we have learned some lessons from our previous games which would be of great benefit when playing against Turk Telekom this time."

"This game against Turk Telekom will be very important for us and very difficult at the same time. The opponent is really hard, I guess it will be very difficult for us to win even at home. We've got a number of players injured in our line-up. However, we will try to do our best to please our fans."
Vladimir Veremeenko - UnicsUnics Kazan bounced back from a defeat in its Last 16 opener to top Turk Telekom on Tuesday night in Group J. The big man duo of Vladimir Veremeenko and Kresimir Loncar led the way for the hosts, who took a double-digit lead in the first period and increased it to 15 in the second. Telekom cut the gap to 39-31 at halftime and rallied behind Kennedy Winston to close the gap to 4 in the fourth quarter, but ran out of time and energy to complete the comeback. Loncar scored a season-high 20 to lead the hosts, while Veremeenko accounted for 14 points on perfect shooting. Marko Popovic added 8 points, mostly from the foul line. Winston paced Telekom with 13 points as the visitors’ starting big men, Michael Wright and Kris Lang, both found themselves in early foul trouble and combined for just 6 points in 38 minutes.

The hosts started by getting Veremeenko open for a layup before Serkan Erdogan answered with Turk Telekom’s first basket. Bekir Yarangume converted a three-point play that gave Telekom a slim 4-5 lead, however Kazan answered back as Veremeenko scored twice and Petr Samoylenko drilled a three-pointer in a 9-0 charge. Erdogan kept Telekom in the picture with a triple, but the visitors couldn’t stop Veremeenko, who sent Lang to the bench with 2 early fouls. And a Terrell Lyday three gave Kazan its first double-digit lead. An offensive foul on Wright was his second as the Telekom frontline struggled to impact the game. Dmitry Sokolv extended Kazan’d lead to 22-10 from the line. Winston and Asim Pars scored for Telekom before Artem Kouziakine gave the hosts a 25-14 lead after 10 minutes. A pair of Loncar baskets upped Kazan’s lead to 30-16 early in the second period. Erwin Dudley came back with back-to-back buckets for Telekom and Pars’s three-point play narrowed the gap to single digits. Soon though things unraveled further for the visitors as a bench technical allowed Unics to increase its lead to 38-23. But Telekom did not fall apart as Rod Blakney hit a three to trigger a 0-7 spurt that brought his team within 39-31 at the break.

Kennedy Winston - Turk TelekomDudley further narrowed the gap to 6 as the second half began, but a lyday jumper and a Veremeenko slam kept Kazan ahead. Veremeenko free throws and a Sokolov bucket made it 47-34. Wright and Winston again got Telekom within 9 and then a Kris Lang basket made it 50-43, causing Unics head coach Aco Petrovic to take a timeout. But Popovic missed from three and Winston scored to get his team to 50-45 at the end of the third period. Lang stole the ball, drew a foul and made a free throw as Telekom further narrowed its deficit. Samoylenko drilled a well-timed three to keep Kazan in charge and Alexey Zhukanenko follwed with 2 free throws to make it 55-46. Telekom fought back behin Baris Ozcan and Winston to get within 4. This time Loncar scored 4 points and soon Popovic free throws restored a 10-point Unics lead as the hosts held on for a crucial home win.
