THE TAKE

Lottomatica Roma returns to the Euroleague after a two-year hiatus to host Partizan Belgrade on Wednesday in the Italian capital. Roma boasts a Euroleague-ready squad, led by three-time champ Dejan Bodiroga and coach Jasmin Repesa. Partizan is a Euroleague regular built around young talent and boosted by the return of center Predrag Drobnjak, a teammate of Bodiroga's on the 2002 world championship gold-medal team from Yugoslavia. These two teams last met in the 2003-04 Euroleague, splitting a pair of games won by the road teams. Only two players from that team, captain Alessandro Tonolli and shooter Alex Righetti, remain for Roma, but they have plenty help now with explosive and high-scoring David Hawkins playing alongside steady Vlado Ilievski. That backcourt will face Vonteego Cummings and youngsters Uros Tripkovic and Milenko Tepic of Partizan. On the wing, Partizan swingman Luka Bogdanovic will fulfill a dream of countless Serbian teenagers by squaring off against Bodiroga. Both teams stack up well in the paint, too. Roma sends Luca Garri, Jerome Moiso and Loukas Mavrokefalidis up against Kosta Perovic, Nikola Pekovic and Drobnjak. Although both teams have talent at every position, the matchup at shooting guard might be determinant. If Hawkins can drive and free up teammates on the perimeter, Bodiroga and Roma become even more dangerous at home. If the shooting star happens to be Tripkovic, however, Partizan will have more than a fighting chance. If both catch fire, every fan watching will be a winner.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"Tomorrow we will face a team that is strong under the basket. They have three players physically strong. It is a team with great talents and young. We need to be tougher, not just tomorrow with Partizan but in general with every team. I known I have players that can play better basket than what we did in the Italian League last weekend, they can be more concrete and able to move together."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"This is our third Euroleague game. Three seasons ago we won in Roma and Lottomatica won in Belgrade. I am not happy with our schedule. I would have preferred if we could have played our opening game with Lotomaticca in Belgrade. We will try to take advantage of the fact that Roma does not yet have a playmaker. I know Lottomatica had many problems during the preseason. They completed the team late, but coach Jasmin Repesa gets more optimistic from day to day, especially after Ognjen Askrabic joined. There are also our old friends Dejan Bodiroga and Vlado Ilievski there and I think Lottomatica has a little advantage. But our young projects Perovic, Tripkovic, Bogdanovic and Pekovic all have Euroleague experience. There is also a group of veterans that give our team balance. I hope we will be a Euroleague contender this season. Our schedule could be better, but our strength is in ourselves not in a schedule"

"I know the players of Partizan, they are friends of mine. We played together in the national team. It is a good team, they play physical and aggressive and they have good experience in Euroleague. I have to admit that for me it is a bit strange to play my first game in Rome with them. But when I will be on the playground it won’t make any difference."
BOZIC, PETAR
Partizan
"We're facing a hard road game against a team that is much better than it seems at first sight. Lottomatica's stars are Bodiroga, Ilievski, Askrabic, Hawkins, Righetti, Garri, Tonolli... Great opponent for the opening game. We are high motivated to do our best. We will try to make surprise and start this season's Euroleague competition with an important road win."
Dejan Bodiroga - Lottomatica Lottomatica Roma enjoyed its Euroleague comeback with a tight 65-60 win in Group B over Partizan Belgrade on Wednesday in the Italian capital. Roma, whose last Euroleague appearance was three season ago, locked up the game in the fourth quarter when its defense limited the guests to just 8 points in first 7 minutes while day-old signing Ognjen Askrabic scored all of his 8 points. wo-time MVP Dejan Bodiroga made his Euroleague return with 14 points. David Hawkins added 12 for the winners, while Jacopo Giachetti and Alex Righetti had 10 each. Predrag Drobnjak was the leading scorer for Partizan with 17 points, while Vonteggo Cummings scored 14. In a low-scoring game, the steals-to-turnovers ratio made the difference as the guests ended up turning over 24 to just 13 for Roma.

Hawkins hurt Partizan's zone defense with a game-opening three-pointer to put Lottomatica back on a Euroleague scoreboard in style. Drobnjak was the first of the guests to react as he scored a basket-plus-free throw and added a fastbreak layup to push Partizan ahead 3-5. Roma now had difficulties in attacking the zone and head coach Jasmin Repesa had to call a timeout, which Bodiroga exploited by scoring a layup-with-free throw and a jumper to give Roma an 8-7 lead. Defensive plays helped the hosts to grab rebounds and run the court as Vlado Ilievski scored a transition basket and Bodiroga finished a fastbreak to make it 12-7. Another corner jumper against the zone, this time by Ilievski, pushed Roma up by 14-7, but Dusan Kecman and Nikola Pekovic broke a four-minute Partizan drought with 4 straight points. Another fastbreak by Ilievski was answered by free throws from Milenko Tepic, but Roma still controlled the scoreboard, 17-12 after 10 minutes.

To start the second quarter, Cummings tried to change the tempo of the game, driving Partizan on a 0-6 run capped by a three-pointer from Luka Bogdanovic. After a Hawkins layup, Partizan couldn't take advantage of an unsportsmanlike foul but, following a Roma turnover, Kosta Perovic hit with a smooth touch to tie the game at 21-21. Alex Righetti's bombing was a problem for the Partizan defense, which switched to zone again. Roma missed consecutive long jumpers and Drobnjak made the hosts pay with a fastbreak and a three-pointer that gave Partizan the lead back, 25-26. After another missed triple by the hosts, Drobnjak dunked on the break before Luca Garri fed Bodiroga for an easy layup to tie 28-28. Roma, however, did the right things in last minute as Giachetti and Hawkins scored free throws off Partizan turnovers – 16 in the half – to lock in a four-point lead at the halftime, 32-28.

Predrag Drobnjak - PartizanRighetti scored back-to-back triples among 8 consecutive points of his own to open the third quarter, but Cummings and Bogdanovic replied with big shots as well to make it 40-34. A pull-up shot by Cummings and free throws by Drobnjak brought Partizan closer, 42-38, although Jerome Moiso was dominating in the paint for Roma. However, a turnaround jumper by Drobnjak and a big three-pointer by Cummings capped a 1-10 run that put the visitors in front, 43-44. Roma reacted with a 7-0 blast inspired by a Garri three-pointer and capped by a Bodiroga jumper that sent the hosts up by 6 points, 50-44. Nikola Pekovic cut the difference to 50-46, but Bodiroga added a late free throw to set a 51-46 Roma lead after 30 minutes.

Both teams struggled to score early in the last quarter, Partizan only doing so when Pekovic hit free throws to make it 50-48. Roma newcomer Ognjen Askrabic, however, ran the court like a guard and finished a fastbreak by drawing a foul for a three-point play that made it 54-48. Askrabic wasn't finished. He took Roma by the hand as he scored another jumper and added free throws to push his new team to the maximum lead of the night, 58-48. A layup by Perovic and a three-pointer by Kecman cut the different to 6 again, at 59-53, but Tripkovic and Drobnjak missed consecutive triples as the comeback try stalled. A layup and free throws by Giachetti sent Roma up by 63-55 with a minute left to play, when Cummings tried to contain the difference scoring a basket-plus-free throw. Giachetti, however, scored late foul shots and sealed a 65-60 opening win for Roma.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
I want to congratulate my team. We played a tough and aggressive defense and that was the key in the match. I think we could have won by more and I know how important every point in the Euroleague is. If we played a great defense, we had problems on offense. We have to improve our performance and system, but we have time for doing that and we are still completing the roster. Our newest player, Askrabic, showed he knows basketball and is a player able to do everything on the court and I think he will be very important the season. We improved our shooting percentage from the foul line and that means we had a good concentration. I want also to congratulate with David Hawkins because he played an excellent defensive game against their best player.
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Congratulations to Lottomatica Roma, they deserved to win, they played their best at the crucial minutes. They played an excellent defense and was the key for their win. We had a lot of trouble managing our offense during all the first half, when we turned over 15 balls. I regret losing because it's clear that Lottomatica is an incomplete team, with a new coach, and many new players, and we were unable to use this. I think that in general it was a bad game, with a lot of pressure on both sides."

Players

BODIROGA, DEJAN
Lottomatica Roma
"It was a very deserved win, we led for all 40 minutes, playing against a team full of talent and enthusiasm. They are really solid. Our defensive performance was the key to winning. It's an important win for our team to lift our morale."
