THE TAKE

The final game of the 2010-11 Eurocup regular season takes place on Tuesday on the Spanish Canary Islands where Gran Canaria 2014 hosts KK Buducnost to determine the outcome of Group C and the last two tickets to the Last 16 stage. The game was originally scheduled to take place two weeks earlier, but was postponed when weather conditions prevented the Montenegrin champs from reaching Gran Canaria. The hosts enter the contest with the best record in Group C at 4-1, but aside from winless Siauliai, both Budivelnik (4-2) and Buducnost (3-2) have Last 16 hopes riding on this game. If Granca wins, it advances as the Group C winner and Budivelnik places second. However if Buducnost wins, the margin of victory will determine the final placing. Buducnost will advance if it wins by at least 20. It wins the group if it wins by 25 or more. And Buducnost can win Group C and eliminate Gran Canaria, thus promoting Budivelnik to second place, if it wins by more than 29. If Buducnost wins by less than 20, it finishes third, leaving Granca first and Budivelnik second. The team that wins Group C will join Unics Kazan, Hemofarm Stada and Cedevita Zagreb in Last 16 Group I. The Group C runner up goes to Group J with BG Goettingen, Aris BSA 2003 and Le Mans Sarthe Basket. When these teams met in Montenegro in November, Gran Canaria cruised to a 66-90 victory as Jaycee Carroll and CJ Wallace scored 14 points each to pace the winners. The hosts boast a well-balanced team with center Xavi Rey and power forward Spencer Nelson joining Wallace and veteran Sitapha Savane to form a deep rotation in the paint, while guards Taurean Green, Carroll, Michael Bramos and Thomas Bellas fuel the offense. Buducnost has one of the Eurocup’s best scorers in Vladimir Dragicevic, who can win the regular season scoring title with a 29-point effort. Marko Simonovic and Marko Scekic surround Dragicevic to form a formidable frontline, while Marko Popovic posts a long-range threat and Bojan Dubljevic, Vladimir Mihailovic and Gintaras Kadziulis all play major minutes in a deep rotation that will offer plenty of alternatives and against Gran Canaria.

Jaycee Carroll - Gran Canaria 2014 (photo cbgrancanaria.net)_25777In a long-awaited showdown, Gran Canaria 2014 became the Group C champion by edging Buducnost m:tel 62-60 at home on Tuesday. The game was originally scheduled to be played on December 21, 2010 but was suspended due to the impossibility of the Montenegrin team to travel to the Canary Islands due to snow storms that closed several airports around Europe. Gran Canaria won Group C with a 4-2 record due to its tie-break advantage against Budivelnik. Meanwhile, Buducnost was third at 3-3 and lost the chance to reach the Last 16. Jaycee Carroll led the winners with 21 points. Xavi Rey added 11 while CJ Wallace had 10 for Gran Canaria. Bojan Dubljevic had 12 points for Buducnost while Marko Scekic added 11 for the guests, that were without Vladimir Dragicevic. Buducnost pulled down 8 offensive rebounds in the opening 5 minutes and found a go-to guy in Dubljevic to get a 16-17 lead after 10 minutes. Javier Beiran and Xavi Rey stepped up for Gran Canaria while Carroll had 8 points late in the first half to make the hosts get a double-digit lead, 38-26, at the break. Buducnost rallied in the second half and a three-pointer by Aleksa Popovic gave his team a 57-58 edge with under 2 minutes left. A dunk by Rey and free throws by Carroll and Taurean Green allowed Gran Canaria to finish the regular season with another home win.

Sitapha Savane got Gran Canaria going with a dunk, igniting a 6-0 opening run that Wallace capped with consecutive layups. Dubljevic stepped up with a put-back basket, as Buducnost fully adjusted its defense and had started to power the offensive board. Another put-back layup by Marko Simonovic got his team within 6-4. Dubljevic followed free throws with back-to-back baskets to give Buducnost its first lead, 8-10. Wallace shined with a second-chance basket and Carroll struck from downtown but Scekic kept Buducnost ahead, 13-15. Tomas Bellas joined the three-point shootout but a dunk by Nemanja Milosevic restored a 16-17 Buducnost edge after 10 minutes. Beiran scored off a steal and Rey added a layup-plus-foul for a 21-17 Gran Canaria lead early in the second quarter. Gintaras Kadziulis and Scekic tried to change things for the guests but a three-point play by Mike Bramos and a dunk by Rey made Buducnost call timeout at 26-21. Rey and Beiran scored again to boost the hosts' margin to 30-22. Aleksej Nesovic hit free throws but Carroll took over with 6 unanswered points to break the game open, 36-24. Carroll matched Nikola Otasevic's layup with free throws to fix the halftime score at 38-26.

A put-back layup by Simonovic ignited Buducnost's comeback right after the break. Scekic scored down low, Popovic buried a three-pointer and by the time Nesovic dunked it off a steal, Buducnost had returned to the game, 38-35. Carroll stepped up with a layup and free throws but Simonovic and Vladimir Mihailovic got the guests even closer, 42-40. Wallace and Rey gave Gran Canaria some fresh air while a three-pointer by Bramos gave his team a 49-42 margin. Popovic took over with a three-point play but Spencer Nelson gave the hosts a 51-45 margin after three quarters. Buducnost knew already it wouldn't reach the next round but kept fighting for a prestigious road win. A layup by Scekic and a three-point play by Kadziulis got the guests within 51-50. Nelson hit free throws and Carroll added back-to-back layups for a 57-52 score with 4 minutes left. Dubljevic struck from downtown and fed Popovic for another triple that completed Buducnost's comeback, 57-58. Rey dunked it while Mihailovic and Carroll traded free throws for a 61-60 Granca lead. Buducnost called timeout but Mihailovic committed a turnover. The guests fouled on Green, who missed his second shot on purpose - but was an airball, giving Buducnost a final chance. Simonovic walked in the game's final possession.
