THE TAKE

Partizan Igokea will look to remain on the path to the Top 16 when it hosts Real Madrid on Thursday at the Pionir Arena in Belgrade, Serbia. Partizan currently holds down the fifth spot in Group C at 4-6, but is only one win ahead of the next two teams in the standings, Lotomatica Roma and Chorale Roanne. The Serbian champs have struggled recently, losing four of their last five Euroleague games, though only one of those defeats came at home. Meanwhile Madrid boasts a 7-3 record in third place in the group and will qualify for the Top 16 this week if it defeats Partizan or if Fenerbahce Ulker beats Roanne. Since opening the season with a pair of road wins, Madrid has gone 0-3 away from home. The Spanish champion was victorious when these teams clashed earlier this season in Madrid, 75-64. They did so by limiting Partizan’s star center Nikola Pekovic to a season-low 6 points, and with him ineffective, the perimeter players didn’t get good shots and head coach Dusko Vujosevic’s men finished by making jut 4 out of 23 three-pointer (17.3%). Meanwhile Louis Bullock was 4 for 5 from downtown to lead the hosts with 15 points. Pekovic remains the focal point of the Partizan attack and he should be better off this week with the return of power forward Novica Velickovic, who missed last week through injury. Slavko Vranes and his 2.29 meters can also play a role against Madrid’s frontcourt, anchored by Lazaros Papadopoulos and Felipe Reyes, with Blagota Sekulic and Axel Hervelle also playing big roles. Milt Palacio runs the Partizan show, teaming with Dusan Kecman and Milenko Tepic to execute plays, while streak shooter Uros Tripkovic could become a factor if he heats up. Bullock teams with top gun Charles Smith and do-it-all forward Alex Mumbru on the wings for the visitors, while Kerem Tunceri and Raul Lopez man the point guard spot. Partizan has risen to the occasion against top opponents before, beating Barcelona at home and losing to Euroleague champion Panathinaikos by a combined 5 points, and its young squad will be hungry to scalp Madrid as well as it looks to return to the Top 16. However Madrid has aspirations of its own, that include climbing the Group C ladder, for which beating Partizan is a necessity. Accordingly, this should be a high-level game, unless Madrid proves to have the magic formula for stopping Pekovic once more and Tripkovic, Kecman and co. cannot punish the visitors accordingly from outside.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"Real is coming to Belgrade in a moment we desperately need to win to keep our chances for the Top 16 alive. We know very well and we respect the team from Madrid. They are strong as a team first of all. With three players taller than two meters in the starting five, they are a little bit slower in defense but on the other side they are real kings of offensive rebounds. But we have quality, too. Our fans could give us wings and put Real players into a fright. If that happens we could beat the great Real Madrid."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"Partizan is playing good basketball. This win will be very important for them in order to reach the Top 16 as there is nothing decided yet. Partizan is a strong team at home and they have Nikola Pekovic, on of the stats leaders in the Euroleague in points, rebounds and ranking. We will have to play good defense and we want to play well to take the win as we want to finish the regular season at the top of our group, for which we have to win all our home games and get wins on the road."

"We are working hard to prepare for a hot welcome to Real stars. I am sure we can beat them. I am also sure it is going to be a true basketball party in Belgrade. We are ready to leave our hearts on the floor but I think it won't be necessary. Our skills and our fans are good enough for our fifth win in the Euroleague."
PAPADOPOULOS, LAZAROS
Real Madrid
"Partizan is a quality squad which features young, talented players. They are a very dangerous team at home, where they are backed by a great crowd. When they play in Belgrade you get to see their real style, with fast game, lots of fastbreaks and very offensive. We have to play with control and head, we must know how to read the game. In Madrid we did just that and we had a great game in defense, which is what we will have to repeat in Belgrade if we want that win."
Alex Mumbru - Real Madrid Real Madrid stormed into the Top 16 from Group C by holding on for a 72-80 road win over Partizan Igokea in Belgrade, Serbia on Thursday. Madrid raised its record to 8-3, good enough to tie for second place with archrival Barcelona, which lost by a point to group leader Panathinaikos at home. Partizan is now 4-7 and tied for fifth place with Lottomatica Roma. Madrid staked its game plan on shutting down Nikola Pekovic, the top-rated performer in the Euroleague going into the game, and succeeded in limiting him to 6 points. Felipe Reyes led the winners with 15 points, while Alex Mumbru had 14 and Lazaros Papadopoulos 12. For Partizan, Milt Palacio and Dusan Kecman posted 13 points each while Milenko Tepic added 10. A close game was tied for the last time at 68-68, after which Reyes scored the next 6 points and Madrid managed that margin until the victory was in hand.

After almost 2 scoreless minutes Charles Smith opened fire in sold-out Pionir Arena as Madrid started with double-teaming Pekovic, Partizan's most dangerous weapon. Blagota Sekulic scored now for the guests before a three-point play from Palacio got Partizan on the board. Sekulic scored again before Uros Tripkovic tied it up 8-8 with another three-point play. Madrid restored a slim lead that jumped to 6 points when Tunceri hit first triple in the game. Madrid big man Lazaros Papadopoulos and Pekovic went off, replaced by Felipe Reyes and Slavko Vranes, respectively, but nothing changed and the visitors held a 17-21 advantage at the end of first quarter.

Milenko Tepic and Felipe Reyes - Partizan Igokea - Real MadridPartizan opened second period with an 8-0 run, taking over the lead as Petar Bozic struck from behind the arc and Vranes dunked. Bullock answered for Madrid and Reyes tied again among 7 straight points that pushed the visitors back in front at 27-32. Vranes continued boosting the hosts with 5 straight points that forged another tie, 37-37. But Madrid held on to lead after one half 38-41 with Alex Mumbru's points from the line.

Both teams started the second half with hard defensive work that resulted in another 2 scoreless minutes. Then Charles Smith and Kecman traded triples before Mumbru added one more as Madrid now led 41-49. Kecman inspired a 7-0 run for Partizan, but just when the visitors seemd to be gaining momentum, Raul Lopez scored a bomb for Madrid in a crucial moment. Papadopoulos added basket-plus-free throw, helping Real to increase its lead to 50-59. He added one more as third period ended with the guests still looking strong at 53-61.

After Bullock increased the gap with a triple to start the final quarter, Novica Velickovic and Palacio brought back hope to Partizan. When Palacio added a three-pointer, the score was 60-65, but Mumbru quieted the crowd by stroking from downtown on the shot-clock buzzer. Milenko Tepic answered the same way for Partizan, however, and when Palacio scored on a fastbreak, Madrid was forced to call timeout holding a 65-68 lead in minute 34. Tepic scored once more from downtown to cap a 15-4 run with a 68-68 tie. From that moment forward, the teams were struggling not for each basket but for each square centimeter on the court. Reyes showed his class with 6 straight points, giving that much of an advantage to Madrid with 2 minutes left. Tepic and Mumbru traded baskets and when Tripkovic missed a triple, Madrid's position was safe to keep the win until the end as Lopez sealed the victory with points from the line.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"First of all, congratulations to Real for the win they deserved. We need two more victories to reach the Top 16, but tonight we were not as brave as we had to be. It seems that it was too hard a game for a number of my players. In a moments when the chance for a turning point came, we made too many mistakes. But we are still in a race for Top 16 and each new game is a new chance to reach one of the two wins that we need."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"This is a very important win to us because here in Belgrade nobody beats Partizan in an easy way. That is the reason we grew up as a team on a hot court. We played patient and strong on defense, especially at the end of third and beginning of the final period. I think that they were key moments for our win. Defense was the key. I wish Partizan luck in reaching the Top 16 because it is among the four or five best teams in our group."

Players

VRANES, SLAVKO
Partizan Igokea
"It was a nice opportunity for us to catch the connection for the Top 16 phase, but we lost concentration at the end after we played well for more than 35 minutes. There are three more games in our group and nothing is finished yet. We had great help from our fans and congratulations to them."
LOPEZ, RAUL
Real Madrid
"It was a heavy game and a very important win to us. We knew that Partizan is almost unbeatable on its own court but we prepared well and played almost perfect during all 40 minutes. We controlled the game and did a good job."
