THE TAKE

The Top 16 race in Group A will have a do-or-die showdown in Dusseldorf, Germany, where RheinEnergie welcomes Climamio Bologna on Wednesday. Although both teams tie for last place in Group A with 2-8 records, the are just two wins away from Prokom, fifth at 4-6. That means that Wednesday's winner between them could find itself with renewed chances to make a run for the Top 16, although the loser will be virtually, if not yet mathematically, eliminated. RheinEnergie already beat Climamio 86-90 in Bologna behind 21 points and 13 rebounds from Ronnie Burrell (13.1 ppg., 6.3 rpg.), who earned Weekly MVP honors for that performance. RheinEnergie, which is currently on a five-game losing streak, will have playmaker Demond Mallet (11.4 ppg.) back in its lineup, since he took part in a German League game this weekend. Sharp shooter Mlajden Sljivancanin (5.8 ppg.), however, is questionable for this game due to an injury. As such, newcomer Devin Green (13 ppg.) and swingman Immanuel McElroy (9 ppg., 2.6 apg.) will help Mallet with the scoring duties. Climamio has its own star backcourt featuring Tyus Edney (11.4 ppg., 3.3 apg.) and Marco Belinelli (12.9 ppg.), who matched his career-high with 23 points against Dynamo Moscow in a loss last week. Stefano Mancinelli (8.1 ppg., 2.6 spg.) posted a huge double-double of 20 points and 10 steals against Dynamo, the latter just a steal shy of a Euroleague record, while Alan Digbeu (2.5 ppg.) and Daniele Cavaliero (3.8 ppg.) will be ready to help off the bench. Burrell will have a tough matchup if James Thomas (10 ppg., 9.5 rpg.), the third-best rebounder in the competition, is able to return from his recent injury troubles. He will fly to Cologne with the team but his playing status is still questionable. RheinEnergie will be most concerned with stopping David Bluthenthal (14.4 ppg., 44.1% 3FG), a mobile power forward who gives headache to all defenders due to his combination of size and range. Thomas has his perfect complement in Vasco Evtimov (5.2 ppg., 4.6 rpg.), another great rebounder ready to face Marcin Gortat (9.5 ppg.) and Guido Grunheid (2.8 ppg.). Aleksander Nadjfeji (9 ppg.) may well be the x-factor of the game for RheinEnergie, as Climamio will try to take revenge for its home loss and both teams seek to jump back into the Top 16 race.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"There are certain players we have to be prepared for. Tyus Edney is the engine of this team. Bluthenthal played well against us, you can’t leave him open outside for a second. And Macinelli is another guy we have to watch out for. Belinelli did not score well in the beginning of the season, but from what I saw, he is in better form now and shooting much better. Now he’s hitting all those crazy shots he takes. He will also use all the tricks to get fouls. He found his rhythm and his confidence. With him, it’s not so much how well you defend him, it’s sometimes only about whether he is going to hit his shots or not. He can be unstoppable if he’s in a groove. So we’d like to make him give the ball up if possible."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Climamio Bologna
"As long as math gives us chances to make it to the second round, we have the duty to try until the last minute of competition. Most of all, we want to show our willingness to do it. Aside from our group standings, catching a win on the road would be very important to keep alive our winning streak after beating Benetton at Treviso in the last Italian League game. If we beat RheinEnergie Cologne we would have two consecutive home games where we can achieve the chance to have a one-game-takes-all night in Poland against Prokom Trefl in Week 14."

Players

MALLET, DEMOND
RheinEnergie
"We have had a new player in Devin Green for a while now, replacing Marcus Faison. Devin is a good guy and a good player, albeit a different player than Marcus. He can help us. I missed the last Euroleague game against Tau, but my injury is coming along. I’ve been talking to my doctor in the States, trying to get healthy for Bologna. My old teammate Steffen Hamann is not with Climamio anymore, so it’s not about playing against him. But I get to go up against Tyus Edney, who was one of my favourite players in high school growing up. He missed our first game against them, and I’m looking forward to playing him now. "
BLU, DAVID
Climamio Bologna
"The Euroleague has become a difficult situation for us. We did calculations and we know that we must win all four games remaining if we want to advance to the Top 16. Moreover, we would need favorable results from other games. The only one way to face this slope is to stay focused on the next game only. RheinEnergie beat us in Bologna so we are aware it will be a difficult game in Germany."
Tyus Edney - Climamio Bologna Climamio Bologna kept its slim chances of reaching the Top 16 alive with a 78-90 win over RheinEnergie Cologne on Wednesday at the Phillipshave Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany. Stefano Mancinelli scored 18 as Climamio improved to 3-8 in Group A this season, just one win less than fifth place Prokom Trefl Sopot, which faces Dynamo Moscow on the road on Thursday. RheinEnergie, which played its final home game of the season, lost its fifth straight game and dropped to 2-9. The German champs must win at Prokom next week to keep any hypothetical chance of advancing to the next stage intact. RheinEnergie kept it close for much of the game, but tired late, as Bologna opened the fourth quarter with a 4-12 game and held on the rest of the way. David Bluthenthal and Tyus Edney added 17 each for Climamio. Edney also dished 7 assists. Marco Belinelli drained three threes on his way to 13 and James Thomas scored 12 and grabbed 7 rebounds. Center Marcin Gortat had 19 points and 12 rebounds – both season-highs – to lead the hosts, while Devin Green, Immanuel McElroy and Demond Mallet scored 16 each. McElroy also dished 6 assists and Janar Talts grabbed a season-high 9 rebounds.

Featuring a small lineup, Cologne looked for its points on outside shots in the early going. After Mancinelli hit a jump shot for the first score of the game for Bologna, Green and Gortat answered with jumpers of their own for the hosts. Bluthenthal scored in the low post against the smaller McElroy, and Gortat tipped in a miss by Mallet for the lead. McElroy hit one of two free throws and a jumper by Mallet made it 9-4. After Mancinelli hit a three for Bologna, McElroy got inside for a tough layup, and a three-pointer in transition by Mallet forced a timeout by Bologna. Down 14-7, Climamio came charging back with a Bluthenthal three. After Green's nifty layup inside for Cologne, Belinelli hit his first shot after many misses, banking in a three. Daniele Cavaliero followed with another hit from downtown. Edney punished RheinEnergie for an errant pass with an easy layup, and Cavaliero found Vassil Evtimov inside. But another three by Mallet kept the score close at 19-21 going into the second quarter.

Immanuel McElroy - RheinEnergieCologne opened the second period with 5 quick points via a layup by Gortat and a three-pointer by Talts. But Bologna answered the call, going on a 9-0 run fueled by Bluthenthal and Mancinelli. Down 24-30, Mallet ended the drought with a layup. Evtimov got open under the basket for an easy lay-in. After McElroy's tip-in, Climamio used good ball movement to get open shots against Cologne's zone defense, as Edney and Mancinelli hit one three-pointer each for the guests. After scores by Gortat and Bluthenthal, McElroy was fouled as he hit a jump shot, and completed the and-one. Mallet hit a technical free throw, and McElroy found Gortat for an alley-oop in transition to make it 36-40. Belinelli and Bluthenthal provided four points for Bologna, while Gortat scored on a driving layup for Cologne. Mancinelli continued his scoring inside with another hook shot, but little-used youngster Philip Schwethelm hit a three to make it 42-45 at the break.

Climamio emerged from the locker room determined to get inside. Thomas and Bluthenthal muscled their way inside time and time again, and even Edney penetrated easily for a layup. While Gortat kept his team in the game with his own baskets down low, Bluthenthal's hook shot made it 46-55. But Cologne came roaring back with jump shots by McElroy and Green. After Green found McElroy on the fastbreak, Mallet hit a three from the corner to tie the game at 55-55. But with emotions running high, Cologne kept turning the ball over, while Edney and Belinelli coolly sank a pair of three-pointers. Green earned three points the old-fashioned way, followed by another make from downtown for Belinelli. With time running out, Mallet missed a jumper, but Green gathered the offensive board and hit the fade-away at the buzzer, cutting the deficit to 60-64 after 30 minutes.

With fatigue beginning to set in for the decimated Cologne team, Bologna used a 4-12 run to gain the upper hand. After yet another hook shot by Mancinelli and a three by Belinelli, Edney got inside for three layups in a row, hitting the last one plus the foul and the ensuing free throw. Backup guard Jonathan Strasser kept Cologne within reach with two three-pointers, but two more layups by Belinelli gave the guests a 69-80 lead with three minutes to go. A three by Devin Green and a layup by Schwethelm came too late for Cologne to come back, as Bologna held on to the lead for the win, 78-90.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"We never gave up, which is important for me as a coach. We showed resistance until the end. With four guys from our rotation missing, it was nearly impossible to win this game. Marcin (Gortat) played really well, which is a result of his hard work. He never relaxes, like a machine, and he showed again that he can play on this level. Today’s game was our final game in Duesseldorf. We never had as much support here as we have in Cologne, so it was twice as hard for my guys to play here without our usual homecourt advantage."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Climamio Bologna
"I'm satisfied with this game, We have three more games remaining, with the one against Efes being the toughest one. Today, we didn’t play spectacular nor very well. Still, we never were in danger of losing the game. Cologne had some very important players out with injuries. Still, they didn’t give us this win easily."

Players

TALTS, JANAR
RheinEnergie
"We are definitely not lucky right now. A lot of our players struggle with nagging injuries, which means that everyone has to give a little more than usual. We have to handle that added pressure, a hundred per cent is not good enough anymore. We still played fairly well until the fourth quarter. It’s hard to play with a short rotation like that, maybe we were a little tired at the end."
BLU, DAVID
Climamio Bologna
"The beginning of the final quarter was the defining moment of this game. Maybe Cologne ran out of gas, as they were really short-handed because of their injury problems. Still, in this league, you can never underestimate anybody. Anything can happen, because we’re all professionals. For us, this win means a big step forward. We still have a theoretical chance of advancing to the next round. We have got to take it one game at a time."
