THE STAKES

In a fight for a prestigious win in Top 16 Group H, Zalgiris hosts Bennet Cantu in Kaunas, Lithuania on Wednesday. Both teams are already out of the race for the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Playoffs, as Regal FC Barcelona and Maccabi Electra are already first and second, respectively, in Group H. Zalgiris (0-5) will try to avoid a sixth consecutive loss in front of its fans as Cantu visits Kaunas for the first time since 1981, when Cantu won 75-82 on is way to grabbing the 1980-81 Saporta Cup title. Expect a great crowd, as always, in Zalgirio Arena.

INJURIES

Vladimir Micov missed Cantu's last home game against FCB Regal and even when returned to action in the Italian League this weekend, he will not play against Zalgiris. Gianluca Basile will also sit out with a leg injury, Zalgiris has no injury problems in this game. Since both teams are out of the Playoffs race, different rotations may take place.

THE TAKE

The battle in the paint seems to be the most important key to this game, as both teams have deep frontcourts ready to duel around the basket. Zalgiris relies on Milovan Rakovic and Robertas Javtokas to carry the load in the paint. Rakovic must use his size and jump hooks against veteran center Denis Marconato. Meanwhile, Javtokas will need to make the most out of his timing and quickness against a great pick-and-roll big man like Giorgi Shermadini, who is having a career-best season. Paulius Jankunas will see most minutes at power forward, with Tadas Klimavicius providing toughness and energy off the bench. Neither will have it easy against two really active, intense players like Maarten Leunen and Greg Brunner, who power the boards well. Zalgiris has opted for a tall lineup recently, using Sonny Weems and Dainius Salenga at both wings. Weems must use his power and strength against a good defensive player like Manuchar Markoishcili. With Basile sidelined, Markoishvili and Nicolas Mazzarino will see extended playing time at shooting guard against Salenga. Marko Popovic will come off the hosts' bench to provide offensive fireworks but he is set to face a top-class defender Doron Perkins. Shooting specialists Tomas Delininkaitis and Mazzarino will have their chance during the game. The matchup between tall playmakers Andrea Cinciarini of Cantu and Mantas Kalnietis of Zalgiris will be one to follow closely, too. DeJuan Collins will offer experience and range for Zalgiris but Perkins will be ready to use his defensive skills and feel for steals against him.

Bennet Cantu finished an impressive Turkish Airlines Euroleague season with a 71-77 road win over Zalgiris Kaunas at Zalgirio Arena on Wednesday. Manu Markoishvili scored a career-high 32 points to pace the winners, who improved to 3-3 in Top 16 Group H. Though both teams had been mathematically eliminated from the playoff race the week before, the game was close throughout. The hosts led 62-59 after Marko Popovic free throws midway through the fourth quarter. But Markoishvili knotted the score with a triple and then Giorgi Shermadini scored the game’s next 5 points as Cantu pulled away to record the victory. Shermadini finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Doron Perkins shined with 8 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Popovic paced Zalgiris with 15 points and 5 assists, Milovan Rakovic tallied 14 points and 7 rebounds and Mantas Kalnietis scored 12 as Zalgiris bowed out of the Top 16 without a victory.
