THE TAKE

Efes Pilsen looks to remain within striking distance of first place in Group A when it hosts winless Climamio Bologna on Wednesday at the Abdi Ipekci gym in Istanbul, Turkey. The biggest story of this game could be the coaching matchup. Climamio's new coach, Ergin Ataman, rose through the ranks at Efes early in his career and coached the team from 1999 to 2001. Efes's current coach, Oktay Mahmuti, served as Ataman's assistant at the club before taking over towards the end of the 2000-01 campaign. Mahmuti has been there ever since. Efes (3-2 is coming off a record-setting performance last week that turned around the team's fortunes. Efes made 11 three-pointers as part of a Euroleague record 39 fourth-quarter points to storm back from an early double-digit deficit and hand Olympiacos its first loss of the season, 95-77. Efes got a big night from Drew Nicholas, who posted 20 points and 6 assists, while Horace Jenkins scored 12 in his return to the team after a two-week absence. Climamio (0-5), the only remaining winless team in the Euroleague, went down 90-80 at Tau Ceramica last week, however the team has now had a first full week under Ataman to regroup. Turning things around for Climamio won't be easy, but the roster certainly has enough big names to do so, the hottest of whom has been David Bluthenthal (17.8 ppg.). The sharp-shooting forward has averaged 26.5 points on 8-of-12 three-point shooting and 7 rebounds in his last two games. Bluthenthal and undersized center James Thomas (9.2 rpg.) create an interesting matchup against Efes's big men Marcus Haislip (10.4 ppg., 6 rpg., 1.8 bpg.), Ermal Kuqo (9 ppg.) and Kerem Gonlum (8.4 ppg., 6 rpg.). In the backcourt, Tyus Edney is back from an injury for Bologna and he will try to pick up struggling shooting guard Marco Belinelli (11 ppg.), with Steffen Hamann likely to help out. Efes will give increased minutes to Jenkins (10.3 ppg.) alongside Nicholas (12 ppg.) and Cuneyt Erden, who had a career-high 15 last week. Another important duel will pit Climamio small forward Preston Shumpert (14.8 ppg.) against teenage sensation Cenk Akyol (10.5 ppg.). Efes is one of the top defensive teams in the league, holding opponents to 68.8 points per game, while its efficient attack turns the ball over a league-low 11.2 times per game. However its 29.4 rebounds per game are also quite low. Ataman will know all about the strengths and weaknesses of Efes, and his ability to get his new charges to take advantage of the latter will say whether Climamio can get its first win of the Euroleague season.

Quotes Head Coaches

MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"It’s really a very important game for both of us. Climamio Bologna is trying to take the advantge of its coaching change. So they will be in a different mode than in games until now. We also want to keep on winning at home. It’s going to be an exciting game for the fans who are going to watch the game in Abdi Ipekci Arena. We will try with all our aim to win it."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Climamio Bologna
"The road to the Top 16 is still long and open. Even though we are 0-5, we want to play our cards right until the last week. This means that we will face Efes Pilsen trying to give our best and to achieve a win. I know the atmosphere where we will play and I know we have to believe in ourselves to return with the win. We beat Scafati in the Italian League over the weekend, but we showed only 50 percent of our potential. If you want to win in Istanbul, you have to play at top efficiency. Efes Pilsen is a strong team, built to reach the Final Four. I can't predict where they will arrive, but I'm sure that their roster is among the best in Europe. They didn't start the season well, but the reason is simple: they changed a lot and chemistry is always a long process."

"There’s another tough game against Climamio Bologna waiting for us. We are feeling fine after the win against Olympiacos. We are still having ups and downs in the games but we are trying to lessen our mistakes game by game. Climamio is also struggling to find its way to a team-oriented game. We have to be very careful not to have another mistake like we had against Le Mans in Abdi Ipekci. Climamio has a very strong squad with stars like Preston Schumpert, Marco Belinelli, Stefano Mancinelli. Our job won’t be easy against them."
EDNEY, TYUS
Climamio Bologna
"We are going to Istanbul with a lot more confidence. After our win in the Italian League, it's like we started the season again. Our new coach Ergin Ataman spoke to the team and spurred us to give our best. We must leave the problems behind us and try to do everything with a first-day enthusiasm. Now, we have to show we are capable of winning on the road and we have this opportunity against Efes Pilsen. I think we have all the skills to reopen the race to the Top 16. We are hungry and we know the Euroleague well. Moreover, Ataman coached in two Final Fousr, the first making a big comeback with his Efes Pilsen team. We go to Turkey aware of what we have to do to improve, and with the will to start winning in Euroleague. They are a strong team that has rallied to beat a big powerhouse like Olympiacos at home. We have to stay mentally focused and play concentrated, especially on defense."
David Bluthenthal - Climamio Bologna Climamio Bologna came back in style on Wednesday to record its first win of the season 72-74 against Efes Pilsen at the Abdi Ipekci gym in Istanbul, Turkey. A 1-16 run in the last period allowed the visitors to jump ahead for good after trailing for most of the game. On the last play, Edney scored a free throw to put Climamio up 2 and then Horace Jenkins turned the ball over in the final seconds when he had a chance to force overtime. David Bluthenthal led the winners with 18 points, while Marco Belinelli and Stefano Mancinelli added 12 apiece to for Bologna. For Efes, which led 64-52 early in the fourth quarter, Drew Nicholas posted 23 points on 7-of-11 three-point shooting, while Cuneyt Erden and Marcus Haislip had 15 each. The win allows Climamio to go 1-5 in Group A while Efes drops to 3-3.

James Thomas started the game with 4 points for Climamio, but Nicholas replied with two threes for an 8-4 Efes edge. Erden had a three-point play of his own, while drawing Preston Shumpert's third foul in 3 minutes. Bluthenthal broke Efes's 8-0 run with a jumper and Belinelli fired in Climamio's first three to make it 11-9. The visitors' defense started to force Efes turnovers and Bluthenthal used that to put Climamio ahead with a triple to complete Climamio's own 0-8 run. Niksa Prkacin and Nicholas put Efes back on top. Nicholas rifled in a third triple, but Belinelli replied in the same way. Cenk Akyol put an end to the first period with free throws to make it 22-20, with 8 baskets having come from beyond the arc.

Efes's defense started to work harder at the start of the second quarter, but Bluthenthal was still efficient on offense. But it was Steffen Hamann who found a hole in the Efes paint to drive and tie it at 26-26. Hamann and then Vasco Evtimov scored to put Climamio ahead by 4 points, but Kerem Gonlum put back an offensive rebound and Erden added a triple to tie it again at 32-32. Efes looked inside on offense, but the defense of the visitors, combined with another Bluthenthal triple, forced an Efes timeout as the scoreboard showed 34-36. Nicholas appeared again for his fourth triple of the night to close the scoring at halftime with the scoreboard showing 37-36 for Efes Pilsen.

Cuneyt Erden - Efes PilsenThe second half opened with an Akyol triple and then Prkacin fed Haislip for a dunk that made it 42-36. Akyol was on fire, and Nicholas joined him with yet another triple for to give Efes its first double-digit lead, 47-36. Bluthenthal hit a turnaround jumper to get Climamio going, and Edney soon added an open jumper to make it 47-40. The game was following the trend of the first minutes as the Climamio run went up to 0-6 with Edney scoring again. Then it was Efes's turn, as the hosts went on a 7-0 run that included an Erden triple. Haislip became a solid option for Efes in the paint, but Bluthenthal remained lethal for Climamio as he nailed another triple. The last two minutes of the third quarter saw both teams struggling on offense. Bluthenthal posted a free throw for a 59-48 Efes edge after 30 minutes.

Belinelli opened the last period with free throws, but Haislip's stylish slam got Efes going. Thomas copied him for Climamio and then Nicholas and Belinelli traded triples to make it 64-55. Hamann reappeared for a triple, but Efes resisted. However after Prkacin added a free throw, Mancinelli's triple, Bluthenthal's jumper and two Belinelli free throws carried the visitors back and tied the game at 65-65. Shupert drilled a triple that stretched the run to a 1-16 and put Climamio up 65-68. After an Efes timeout, Erden found the space for a triple and then he added two free throws to make it 70-69 with a minute to play. On the next play, Mancinelli blasted a lethal three and with 25 seconds to go, Erden missed his attempt. Belinelli went to the line after being fouled, but scored only one and Jenkins drove quickly for a layup, 72-73 and 10 seconds to go. On the last play, Edney was fouled and went to the line. He missed the first shot, but scored the second. With a 72-74, Jenkins took the ball and drove fast again, but this time he turned the ball over allowing Climamio to take its first win of the season.

Head Coaches

MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"There's nothing much to say about the game. To play the last five minutes of the game expecting and wishing to see the end in the Euroleague, when you were leading by 12 points, and if you go down by three points all of a sudden, of course you lose it. Trying to control the game by stopping, losing the balls one after another, it's really unbelievable. You cannot handle those mistakes at a Euroleague level. We can never say that we can learn lesson of this loss. Because we are Efes Pilsen and it's not correct to take this loss as a lesson. Unfortunately we played that way. Nothing more to say but congratulations for Climamio Bologna."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Climamio Bologna
"It's a very valuable win for us tonight. We came here winless and won against a very strong opponent, which beat Olympiacos last week by 18 points. We played very clever tonight. We also challanged well. We had some doubts before the game. David Bluthenthal came to Istanbul just a couple of hours before the game because he stayed at home because of sickness. I think this win will open the way for us in the Euroleague. Before I landed in Bologna, everybody was saying that the team was not doing well in defense. But tonight we showed a good example of good defense. This was the reason of our win. The was we made defence in this game is valuable for us as much as the win."

Players

"Obviously, it's a very hard loss for us to think about right now. Because for the good part of the game, we had the game controlled. But in the last four minutes of the game, they made a lot of points but we couldn't make any. Climamio changed the strategy a little bit in the last quarter and they made the difference also with their good defense. We weren't able to do the same."
BLU, DAVID
Climamio Bologna
"It was a very important game for us. This is the first win in the Euroleague and a big step. Anytime you have a chance like new coach, some players with the team, it takes a lot of type of charachter of those new things. We played tough for 40 minutes, played good defense and I think in the end, that's why we won the game. We stuck together as a team, and that's why we won the game tonight."
