THE TAKE

Two Turkish Airlines Euroleague powerhouse face off in a tough game early in the 2012-13 season, as reigning champion Olympiacos Piraeus welcomes Caja Laboral Vitoria to the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Thursday. Olympiacos has kept 10 of the players that lifted the trophy last season, but has a new boss in Georgios Bartzokas. Laboral has most of its frontcourt sidelined, as Tibor Pleiss, Maciej Lampe and Unai Calbarro are out for sure, while Milko Bjelica is questionable. Laboral, however, will be competitive as always, so expect a big showdown to get the 2012-13 Euroleague started for both teams. Laboral has to find the way to stop combo guard Vassilis Spanoulis, a two-time Final Four MVP right at the prime of his career. His skills, game knowledge, and outstanding leadership make him a nightmare matchup. Moreover, Olympiacos relies on sharp shooter Martynas Gecevicius, clutch hero Kostas Sloukas and small forwards Stratos Perperoglou and Kostas Papanikolaou to make the difference at the wings. Spanoulis and Gecevicius will test their scoring skills against Brad Oleson and Fabien Causeur. Meanwhile, Papanikolaou and Perperoglou must use their size and experience against former All-Euroleague swingman Fernando San Emeterio, who always steps up when his team needs him. Due to the circumstances, Laboral may use twin point guards often. The guests have three playmakers at Coach Dusko Ivanovic's disposal, veteran Carlos Cabezas, talented youngster Thomas Huertel and newcomer Taylor Rochestie, whose speed and high basketball IQ will be critical when it comes to stopping Spanoulis. Olympiacos relies on Vangelis Mantzaris and Dimitrios Katsivelis to set a high tempo on defense and help Olympiacos run the floor. With most of its frontline sidelined, Andres Nocioni and Nemanja Bjelica will be Ivanovic's main weapons against a battery of big man that includes Pero Antic, Kyle Hines, 2011-12 Euroleague hero Georgios Printezis, former Laboral center Joey Dorsey and newly signed Dimitrios Mavroeidis. The Reds used couple of second-quarter runs to erase an early 20-28 deficit. Georgios Printezis scored 7 points in a 16-1 spurt that gave Olympiacos control of the game and Final Four MVP Vassilis Spanoulis and Stratos Perperoglou each hit a triple in 10-0 run to finish the first half. However, Maciej Lampe scored 14 of Caja Laboral’s 29 points in the third quarter enabling the visitors to come back from a double-digit deficit, but led by brilliant Spanoulis and with clutch triples from Pero Antic and Kostas Sloukas, Olympiacos held on for the victory. Printezis finished as the Reds’ leading scorer with 17 points on 3-for-4 three-point shooting. Spanoulis scored 16 and dished out 6 assists, while Perperoglou added 14. Lampe was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points, Brad Oleson added 13 and Andres Nocioni, Fernando San Emeterio and Nemanja Bjelica each scored 11 in defeat.
