THE TAKE

A game with major Top 16 implications from Group C takes place in the Italian capital on Wednesday when Lottomatica Roma hosts Partizan Igokea. Both teams enter the game tied at 4-7 for fifth place in Group C – the last spot that brings with it a ticket to the Top 16. Only one of them will be among the top five at the end of the game and that team will have a leg up on the competition the rest of the way. Partizan’s rising center Nikola Pekovic and power forward Novica Velickovic combined for 37 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Serbian champs to a 91-86 victory over Roma when they met in Belgrade in November. Pekovic drew 13 fouls, leaving Roma’s big men in foul trouble all night and paving the way for a Partizan win. Since that night, Partizan has gone 1-5, while Roma is 3-3. The 5-point difference from that game could also play a factor. If Partizan wins, it will enjoy in essence a two-win lead over Roma by owning the head-to-head tiebreaker. The same would be for Roma if it were to win by more than 5 points. A Partizan loss by fewer than 5 points will keep these two teams close for the games to come. The focal point of the game is likely to be in the paint once more, with Roma seeking the right guys to handle Paekovic and Velickovic. Erazem Lorbek and Alessandro Tonolli, who both fouled out, and Gregor Fucka and Roberto Gabini, who both had 4 fouls, will be on the hot seat for Roma. On the other hand, Pekovic has been less dominant this season on the road and is coming off a 6-point performance in a loss to Roma. The home team’s deep backcourt has taken a blow with the loss of Jacopo Giachetti to injury, but with Roko-Leni Ukic running the show and David Hawkins, Allan Ray and Jon Stefansson providing plenty of scoring options, head coach Jasmin Repesa has what to build on. Milt Palacio steers the Partizan attack with the likes of Dusan Kecman, Milenko Tepic, Uros Tripkovic and versatile forward Cedomir Vitkovac chipping in. Roma’s home form, which includes wins over defending champion Panathinaikos and Real Madrid would make it the favorite, unless the team has the game that saw it lose to Fenerbahce Ulker by 21 right after those wins. Anything can happen in this encounter, where will and desire could end up playing a bigger role than skill. That being said, Roma must still find a way to contain Pekovic to record the victory.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"Our home game against Partizan is not the most important game of our lives nor the game of the year as everyone says it is. We have to be optimistic and be positive. With all the injury woes we have faced we deserve something more. In Sunday's game, Jacopo Giachetti hurt himself. Of course, it is an important game for us but we still have several days to prepare. Partizan is a great team but we have already played against them on their court. I hope we will have our fans' support at the PalaLottomatica to help the team."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"We are not able to promise that we are going to lose. We are able to promise that we shall fight for the win. In Rome we are playing a decisive game. Lottomatica is going to be highly motivated because we both desperately need that win to reach the Top 16. The precondition for our best performance is to play without pressure. It is so important because pressure is a loading factor for us. We showed our best face two weeks ago in Athens playing an equal game with Panathinaikos because we were unloaded. I hope the same situation would be in Rome."

Players

DE LA FUENTE, RODRIGO
Lottomatica Roma
"The game against Partizan is a bit like a final. In games like this the psychological factor is crucial. We have the advantage of playing at home and the help of our fans will be very important. We must play with confidence and trust. This is my second Euroleague game with Lottomatica Roma and I hope I can give my contribution. I arrived to Roma to give this team a helping hand and Roma merits to be in the Top 16."
KECMAN, DUSAN
Partizan Igokea
"There are three more games in our Euroleague group and we need two wins to secure a spot in the Top 16. I am sure we shall fight strong in all three games and our team believes we shall celebrate twice. I think Partizan and Lottomatica are approximately similar quality teams and nuances will decide the winner. It is so important that we all believe in ourselves."
Roko-Leni Ukic - Lottomatica Roma Roko-Leni Ukic's flying layup with 33 seconds left in overtime gave Lottomatica Roma a thrilling 88-87 victory over Partizan Igokea and exclusive hold on the all-important fifth place in Group C on Wednesday. It was Roma’s second straight win and boosted the club’s record to 5-7, putting head coach Jasmin Repesa’s side in pole position for a spot in the Top 16. Meanwhile Partizan dropped its third straight game and fifth in a row on the road to drop to 4-8. However since Roma failed to overcome the 5-point deficit from its loss at Partizan earlier in the season, the head-to-head tiebreaker between the clubs sits with the Serbian champs, should Partizan make the ground between the clubs before the end of the regular season. Ukic had a chance to give Roma a 3-point lead from the line with just 10 seconds remaining, but only made the first and missed the second, giving Partizan a chance to pull level or take the lead. David Hawkins fouled Dusan Kecman, who made both free throws to send the game to overtime. In the extra period, Partizan led by as many as 4 points, but Ukic would be the hero. He drove in and scored a lay-up with 30 seconds remaining for what would be the final score and Partizan failed to score at the end, with Milenko Tepic’s running one-hander in the final seconds off target. Ukic led Roma with 23 points, Erazem Lorbek added 22, Allan Ray 21 and Hawkins posted 10 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals. Novica Velickovic paced Partizan with a career-high 22 points and 9 rebounds, Nikola Pekovic added 17 points and 8 boards, Kecman added 15, Milt Palacio 13 and Tepic 10.

Velickovic started the game on fire for Partizan, burying 3 of 4 shots from behind the arc on his way to 13 points in the opening quarter. Neither side was able to open much of a lead, with Velickovic hitting his first 2 three-balls for the visitors’ first 6 points. A twisting, acrobatic drive by Ukic saw the guard release the ball with his back to the basket and he was fouled on the play. Ukic made the free throw to put the hosts back on top at 7-6. After Velickovic dunked to put the visitors back in front, he fed Pekovic for 2 points. Another Velickovic three stretched Partizan's advantage to 9-14, only for Ukic to hit a layup and Lorbek to follow with a three-pointer to tie the game. Petar Bozic's three, Partizan's fourth of the first quarter, saw the visitors take a 22-25 lead at the end of the quarter.

Dusan Kecman - Partizan IgokeaNeither side was able to create a substantial lead in the second quarter, either, but Roma were able to finish strong with a 6-0 run to close the period. Trailing 36-34 after another Bozic three-pointer, recent signing Rodrigo de la Fuente hit a couple of free throws and after a Pekovic turnover, Lorbek hit a jumper. The outstanding Ukic scored right before the end as Roma led 40-36. Velickovic, after his excellent first quarter, led all scorers with 13 points at the half, while Ray and Lorbek had 12 apiece for Roma.

Lorbek buried a three-pointer to start proceedings in the second half only for Kecman to reply with a three-point play. Ray then added to Roma's total with aggressive play on offense, earning him trips to the charity stripe where he made 4 in a row for a 47-39 lead. A three from captain Alessandro Tonolli then excited the home crowd, taking the Roma lead to its biggest yet, 50-39. Kecman made 2 more free throws to spark a 6-0 run that was capped by Palacio's three-pointer, but Lorbek scored down low and the high-scoring Ray added 2 free throws and a bucket to take the advantage back to 56-45 midway through the quarter. An Ukic shot from long range stretched the advantage to 59-47, and he would add 2 more free throws at the end of the frame as Roma took a 65-58 lead to the final quarter.

Ukic began the fourth quarter with a basket to extend the lead to 9, but Partizan got itself right back in it with a pair of Pekovic free throws capping a 0-7 surge that made it 67-65. After a Kecman free throw reduced the hosts' lead to 72-70, Roma appeared to go on a game-winning surge. De La Fuente scored 5 straight points on a couple of baskets and a free throw. The Spanish star, who made his reputation at Barcelona as a terrific defender, scored again to extend the lead to 79-71. Palacio then took over for Partizan, hitting two straight three-balls and then a jumper to close the gap to 79-78 with a minute to play. Ukic had a chance to give the home side a 3-point lead from the line, but made 1 of 2, and Kecman made 2 at the stripe to send the game to overtime.

Allan Ray - Lottomatica RomaUros Tripkovic penetrated and scored to put Partizan in front in the overtime, and after Hawkins split 2 at the line, Tepic grabbed an offensive rebound off a Palacio miss and scored for an 81-84 lead. Hawkins earned a trip back to the line and made both to cut the deficit to 1, but the Roma star then put Palacio on the charity stripe and he made 1 of 2. Pekovic's hook shot with 2:14 remaining stretched Partizan's lead to 83-87 and it looked as if they might just leave Rome with a victory. Lorbek had other ideas. His three-pointer with less than two minutes to go made it 86-87, and after a Lorbek air ball, Gregor Fucka drew a charge from Palacio. With one minute to go, Partizan led by 1 and Palacio turned the ball over again, this time getting called for traveling. Ukic then drove in from the left for a layup to put Roma back on top at 88-87. Partizan went to the other end and Tepic missed, but Pekovic was there for the offensive rebound. He tried to go back up but had the ball swatted away by Hawkins. Partizan called a timeout with 5 seconds remaining, and when play resumed, they got the ball to Tepic. He dribbled to his left and put up a running one-hander that only drew iron as Roma prevailed to keep its Top 16 hopes alive.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"We had to sweat for this victory. We played against a very strong, athletic and tall rival. It's true that we could have won by a 5-point margin, but it's also true that we could have lost this game. This victory is hugely important for us because we now decide our destiny and that is a very good thing. I don't know how my players found the energy considering we are missing several players. In overtime, I saw Roko Ukic, Erazem Lorbek and David Hawkins very tired and I feared the worst."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"There have been two refereeing decisions that have had a strong effect on the game. It has been a good game, it was an important game for both teams, but I can't believe how referees are allowed to decide a game. I have spoken to my players about the mistakes we have done and that we must look ahead, we have two games left to play."

Players

UKIC, ROKO
Lottomatica Roma
"We knew how important this game was for our future in the competition and we are really happy to have won. We knew that a defeat would really put us in the danger zone. It was a hard game against a rival that never gave up hope. I was worried of fouling out in the crucial time of the game but I held on. I think David Hawkins has done a great job on both offense and defense tonight and he deserves a lot of credit for this win."
PEKOVIC, NIKOLA
Partizan Igokea
"We are sad to have lost this game, we came to Rome desperately wanting a victory and we had our chances to win. This game meant a lot to us, but we must look ahead and try to improve."
