THE TAKE

The sole winless team remaining in the competition, Le Mans, hopes to get in the victory column at last when it hosts Group B's next-to-last team, Armani Jeans Milano, on Thursday in France. Le Mans (0-6) already has matched the most defeats to start a Euroleague regular season since the London Towers didn't win any games at all back in 2001-02. With four of its losses so far coming by six or fewer points, Le Mans hasn't been uncompetitive, but a habit of losing fourth quarters has hurt, and last week's 20-point loss at Cibona was a step backwards. Milano (1-5) got its first victory in surprise fashion on the road at Aris TT Bank two weeks ago, and suffered a one-point buzzer-beater loss at home to Maccabi last week. Both teams rely on big men ranked among the Euroleague's best 20 performers until now. Le Mans center Sam Clancy leads his team in scoring at 14.8 points and rebounds at 7.5 per game. Travis Watson of Milano ranks second in the Euroleague with 9.8 rebounds on average. Only swingman Luka Bogdanovic joins Clancy as a double-figure scorer for Le Mans, however, while Milano has Watson and Ansu Sesay on the insde, Danilo Gallinari, Melvin Booker and Dusan Vukcevic on the perimeter - all putting up 10 points or more per game. One reason Le Mans is ranked third-to-last in scoring is across-the-board low percentages whether shooting from long distance, two-pointers or at the foul line. The young Le Mans backcourt of Yannick Bokolo, Antoine Diot, Nicolas Batum and Raviv Limonad - none yet 25 years old and two of them teenagers - will have to help their team get better shots while also dealing with Milano veterans Booker and Vukcevic - 35 and 32 years old, respectively. Watch for Nebojsa Bogavac coming off the bench to help the hosts. Milano has its own teen sensation in Gallinari, so expect this game to be a showcase for the next generation, too. First and foremost, however, it's a clear opportunity for Le Mans to give itself and its home fans an early holiday gift. While Milano is playing on the road, however, it's also a team that has been on the rise in recent weeks and has no plans of stopping that trajectory now.

Quotes Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"Milano has become a new team since their latest roster changes. The arrival of a new coach and of the new playmaker, Booker, has improved their chemistry a lot. Their defensive level increased during their two last Euroleague games against Aris and Maccabi, too. They had a beautiful victory at Aris. We'll have to put a lot of rhythm into the game. We have to be careful of their shooters, Gallinari and Vukcevic, who have become more and more dangerous since the renewal of the team. We have to control their big men, too, Watson and Sesay."
CAJA, ATTILIO
AJ Milano
"We have to play this game not only for the standings, but especially thinking about our improvement day by day. We are going to put all our concentration in this game, in order to prepare also our key matchup against Virtus Bologna in the Italian League, and to give more confidence to all our players. The most important thing for us is try to play good basketball, like we did in the last two Euroleague games. It's always difficult to play on the road, especially against an athletic team like Le Mans, but we have to prove to ourselves that we can be tough in defense and in the paint, and also be effective in offense, even if they will press us."

Players

DIOT, ANTOINE
Le Mans
"It's a very important game for both teams, but especially for us, obviously. We have to give it all we’ve got, until the end. We need this win for two good reasons: for our pride, and to keep a little hope for the second-leg return games."
GIOVACCHINI, ANTHONY
AJ Milano
"Every game is hard, especially on the road. The Euroleague is the highest level in Europe, so we expect Le Mans to be a very good and intense team, but we are going there searching our second success in the competition. I think we are in a better situation than a few weeks ago: we are working good during the practices and we are more confident in our potential. Le Mans will be under pressure because they can't lose again at home. They have great, talented players, but I think that we can manage our destiny in this game if we play with the right attitude."
Dusan Vukcevic - AJ Milano Armani Jeans Milano confirmed that it is ready to fight for a Top 16 spot in Group B by edging Le Mans 63-71 in France on Thursday night. Armani Jeans Milano registered its second consecutive road win in Group B and improved to 2-5 to stay seventh in the standings, while Le Mans dropped to 0-7 and needs a major turnaround to keep its Top 16 chances alive. Luka Bogdanovic punished it with a big triple while Alain Koffi scored inside for a 5-2 Milano lead. Limonad buried a three-pointer to cap a 8-0 Le Mans lead. Watson tried to change things with a power layup but Nicolas Batum answered with a five-meter jumper against Milano's zone defense. The guests called timeout and switched to man-to-man defense but Limonad made a free throw for a 11-4 Le Mans lead. Watson scored in the paint but Limonad was now on fire, as he stepped up with consecutive baskets in transition to keep Le Mans ahead. Vukcevic had found space for an uncontested layup while Koffi accidentally scored in his own basket to get Milano within 15-10. Yannick Bokolo drew a foul and calmly made free throws, as Koffi kept dominating in the defensive end with 3 blocks in the opening period. Even with that, a three-pointer by Melvin Booker got Milano within 17-13 after 10 minutes.

Phil Ricci split 2 free throws to give Le Mans a 20-15 edge. Milano could not find the way to the basket but defense kept the guests in the game now. Watson drew a foul and hit a free throw, but the guests needed much more than that. Clancy scored inside to boost the hosts' lead to 22-16 midway through the second quarter. Vukcevic stepped up with a long two-pointer, making Le Mans call timeout at 22-18. Batum buried one from downtown and soon added a put-back basket to give Le Mans its biggest lead, 27-18. Booker made free throws right after the break but Limonad stroke twice from downtown, one from each wing, to make Le Mans regain the lead, 37-35. Gallinari grabbed a loose ball and put it in but Le Mans was a different team in defense now, with much more aggressivity. Milano opted to drive to the basket, as Wtason allowed the guests to have second-chance shots. Both teams exchanged turnovers and missed shots until Booker scored coming off the baseline for a 37-39 Milano lead. Clancy provided a highlight with a wild dunk in traffic but Watson quickly answered with an even bigger slam. Le Mans started to dominate the defensive board but soon entered the foul bonus. Gallinari quickly made free throws that Koffi erased with a jump hook to get the hosts within 42-43. Limonad took over with an off-balanced jumper but a put-back layup by Pietro Aradori provided another lead change, 44-45. Clancy scored inside but Casey Shaw shined with a put-back layup. Koffi kept pacing Le Mans with a put-back dunk that Limonad followed with a driving basket that gave the hosts a 53-49 edge after three quarters.

AJ Milano celebratesLe Mans stayed focused in defense early in the fourth quarter, not allowing Milano to take any easy shots. Meanwhile, Limonad fed Clancy for a two-handed dunk to give the hosts a 55-49 margin. Gallinari found space for an easy layup but Clancy found Koffi for yet another big dunk. Milano called a much-needed timeout and Booker banked in a mid-range shot, as the guests switched back to 2-3 zone defense. Mindaugas Katelynas scored in a third-chance Milano offense to give the guests some hope at 58-55. Le Mans called timeout but kept struggling to score while Vukcevic got Milano even closer, 58-57.
