THE TAKE

There will be a lot of new faces on the court Wednesday when Maroussi BC hosts CSKA Moscow on opening night in Group C. For Maroussi, which climbed into the Euroleague regular season via the Qualifying Rounds, the game will be the club’s debut in Europe’s premier competition. Meanwhile CSKA boasts a far more seasoned franchise and roster, but Evgeny Pashutin will mark his debut on the Euroleague sidelines as head coach. Although one might think this game shapes up as a mismatch with a newcomer against a club that has reached the title game for four straight seasons, Maroussi would beg to differ. Already in prime playing shape after surviving the qualifying rounds, Maroussi boasts a deep roster with experienced players who will try to use the benefit of their home floor to start their Euroleague campaign in style. Of course CSKA’s best won’t be intimidated as four of its starters were there last season for the club’s last visit to Athens, a 34-point rout of Panionios. Maroussi’s strengths are its dynamic guards, technically sound forwards and depth in the paint. Veteran Billy Keys and newcomer Jamon Lucas lead the backcourt that will challenge CSKA stars J.R. Holden, Trajan Langdon and Zoran Planinic. At small forward, defensive ace Michalis Pelekanos will be charged with slowing down former Euroleague MVP Ramunas Siskauskas, while the hosts will send the likes of Kostas Kaimakoglou against Viktor Khryapa and Andrey Vorontsevich at the other forward spot. Inside, Dimitrios Mavroeidis and Jared Homan are part of a five-man battery of paint players that will square off against Dimitry Sokolov, with Ivan Radenovic providing depth. The key to Maroussi’s chances could be continued success shooting from downtown – the team was 22 for 42 (52.4%) from behind the arc at home in the qualifying rounds. Meanwhile, with Sasha Kaun questionable due to injury, CSKA will need big things from Sokolov in his Euroleague debut and for Radenovic, Vorontsevich and Khryapa to all make themselves felt on the glass if the Russian champs seek to control the game.

Quotes Head Coaches

BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Maroussi BC
"A great trip is about to start and we are very pleased and also proud to be here. I think that Maroussi deserved to advance and to enjoy this experience and now the dream comes true. We accomplished the first target of the season, but our ambition is bigger than this. There is no reason to try to persuade my players that we have to give our best, they realized it from the very first moment. There is a big challenge over here and everybody can have a great profit. Regarding the opening match, CSKA Moscow is a big and glorious club, which combines experience and quality. We give them a lot of respect, but we have no fear. We have our philosophy and our strategic plan and I hope that we will stay competitive till the end."
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"This game will be the first official away game for us this season, so it will become a special examination for us. It is always difficult to play in Greece. Maroussi will make its debut in the Euroleague, but the team demonstrated a high level in the series against Alba Berlin, playing tight defense and controlling the tempo. Moreover, the Greek club has a long bench with two or three good players at each position. Our task is to stop their leaders first and to play off our defense."

"I feel proud to be part of such a great competition and that is the feeling of everybody in the club. Since we made it to the regular season, we will try to have a noteworthy appearance. We know who we are and whom we will play against, but this is really challenging and fascinating. CSKA Moscow is one of the biggest clubs in the history of the game, but we will fight against them and try to have the best possible result."
RADENOVIC, IVAN
CSKA Moscow
"Maroussi changed a lot during preseason, losing three key players from starting lineup and changing the coach. Actually I did not expect them to get too far this year, but they advanced to Euroleague regular season playing a very tough, physical, slow-paced game against Alba Berlin. The game will be difficult for us because we play away from home for the first time this season. I think we should play tough defense and try to stop their point guard, Billy Keys, who is the key player intheir offense. That will give us better chances to win."
Trajan Langdon - CSKA MoscowCSKA Moscow started the season in an incredible way by edging Maroussi Costa Coffee 65-66 in Athenson Wednesday on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Viktor Khryapa. The final seconds proved to be among the most exciting finishes of a Euroleague game in recent history. The game featured three lead changes in the final 10.4 seconds. Trajan Langdon downed a baseline jumper for a 62-63 CSKA edge, but Billy Keys buried a seven-meter three-pointer to put Maroussi back ahead, 65-63, with 1.4 seconds to go. CSKA called timeout and managed to put the ball in the hands of Khryapa, who sank an outstanding fade-away three-pointer at the buzzer. Langdon led the winners with 18 points. J.R. Holden added 16, Ramunas Siskauskas had 12 while Khryapa just got 5, but added 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 3 blocks. Kostas Kaimakoglou led Maroussi with 15 points. Keys added 14, Dimitris Mavroeidis 13 and Jamon Lucas had 10 for the hosts, who were playing in Europe’s premier competition for the first time.

Jared Homan got Maroussi going with a fast-break dunk and he soon beat the shot-clock buzzer with a mid-range jumper for a 4-2 lead. CSKA tried to run its offense through Dimitry Sokolov in the opening minutes, but Levon Kendall downed a four-meter jumper and Keys added a fast break layup to keep Maroussi ahead, 8-3. CSKA could not find the way to the basket, but Siskauskas fed Holden for an open three-pointer. Keys scored again after a timeout as CSKA tried to slow down the game tempo to find better shots. Sokolov took over with a two-handed dunk and Langdon came off a screen to hit a big triple that gave the guests their first lead, 10-11. Lucas shined with a floating jumper over Sokolov that Siskauskas bettered with a bomb from downtown. Sokolov scored in transition and a red-hot Langdon sank a six-meter jumper to boost the guests' margin to 12-18 after 10 minutes.

Billy Keys - Maroussi BCKaimakoglou fired in a three-pointer at the start of the second quarter as Maroussi turned to Mavroeidis to stop Sokolov. Michalis Pelekanos added his own shot from downtown to tie the game again, 18-18. CSKA opted for a faster lineup with Ivan Radenovic and Khryapa together on court, trying to change the game rhythm. Langdon took over with a wild catch-and-shoot triple, but a tip-in by Mavroeidis kept Maroussi close. Lucas and Langdon traded layups before CSKA called timeout to improve its poor ball circulation. Holden buried a long jumper that Mavroeidis erased with an alley-oop layup. Kaimakoglou sank his second three-pointer, but free throws by Siskauskas off a CSKA timeout and another jumper by an unstoppable Langdon allowed CSKA to regain the lead, 27-30. A turnaround jumper by Kaimakoglou, a huge triple by Mario Batis and a fast break layup by Mavroeidis gave Maroussi a 34-32 edge at the break.

CSKA struggled to score early in the third quarter, as Pelekanos managed to stop Siskauskas. Langdon stepped up with free throws and CSKA was its usual self in defense, keeping Maroussi scoreless for more than three minutes. Lucas took over with a running jumper, however, and Keys soon added a three-pointer from the left wing for a 39-34 Maroussi lead. Holden provided a highlight with a stop-and-pop three-pointer, but he didn't find much help. Still Holden battled on with a wild driving layup that brought CSKA within 40-39. Kaimakoglou made free throws, but Zoran Planinic and Holden soon helped CSKA to regain the lead, 42-43. Mavroeidis scored around the basket, but free throws by Holden and a power layup by Radenovic kept the guests ahead, 45-47. Keys sank a seven-meter bomb only for Holden to answer with a running jumper to provide another lead change, 48-49, at the end of the third quarter.

CSKA tried to speed up its offense early in the fourth quarter, but Maroussi had improved its defense and was not allowing any open shots. Khryapa stepped up with a baseline jumper, but a layup by Lucas kept Maroussi within 50-52 with seven minutes to go. Kaimakoglou struck again from downtown, however a layup-plus-foul by Radenovic kept CSKA ahead, 53-55. Lucas scored again in penetration, but Siskauskas bettered that with a three-pointer. Mavroeidis shined with a big basket in the low post before Siskauskas downed another triple for a 57-61 CSKA lead with three minutes remaining. Mavroeidis committed a turnover, but made up his mistake with a key three-point play and a fast break dunk by Kaimakoglou gave Maroussi a 62-61 edge with 1:10 to go. Pelekanos blocked Holden's five-meter shot, but Maroussi committed a 24-second violation, giving CSKA the ball back with 21.6 seconds remaining. Langdon answered the call with a baseline jumper, but Keys buried a huge seven-meter bomb with 1.4 seconds to go. CSKA called timeout and Khryapa provided the first highlight of the 2009-10 Euroleague season with a fade-away three-pointer that gave CSKA the win at the buzzer!

Head Coaches

BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Maroussi BC
“We proved that we deserve to compete in the Euroleague and that we are here for good. We played against CSKA, one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Although we did not manage to win tonight, we will do that eventually. Congratulations to all my players, especially for the defense they played against CSKA in the last seven possessions. In the last second, it's difficult to tell what went wrong. Had we gone for a foul, we could have been called for a flagrant one or allowed CSKA shoot three from the line. Anyway, we weren't lucky, but that's basketball.”
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"We had what we expected - a very difficult game against a very well-built, well-coached team. Our leaders - J.R. Holden, Trajan Langdon and Ramunas Siskauskas - played at a high level and that is a good sign. We played well in defense, allowing Maroussi to score just 65 points, but our offense needs to improve. We looked weak on offense, especially in the second quarter. I want to saw a few words about Viktor Khryapa, who recently recovered from an injury. Psychologically speaking, this is a very important win, not only for the team, but also for him."

Players

KEYS, BILLY
Maroussi BC
"Almost winning is the worst case scenario for a defeat. We had bad luck at the buzzer and lost. The important think is, though, that we proved we deserve a spot amongst Europe's best teams. We are looking forward for the upcoming games and for getting our first win."
RADENOVIC, IVAN
CSKA Moscow
"We knew that Maroussi is a tough team to beat. We didn't play well tonight, but the good news are that we won. We have a long way in front of us and a lot of room for improvement. I am sure we will improve our game."
