THE TAKE

Turk Telekom (1-4) and Unics Kazan (2-3) both hope to finish out their Eurocup competition on a high note as they face off in the Last 16 Group J. Turk Telekom fell to 1-4 with its fourth straight loss, 94-86 at Zadar. Head coach Ercument Sunter's Turkish team could not slow down the Zadar offense, which shot 60% from two point range and 46% on three-pointers while committing just 8 turnovers. Sunter saw the trio of forward Michael Wright (21 points), guard Tutku Acik (19) and center Erwin Dudley (20) combine for 60 points on a combined 20 of 21 from near range. And guard Rod Blakney added 11 points. But there was little other production for Sunter. The coach hopes his team can rebound and will need to execute much better than the first matchup with Unics, which won 72-57 in Week 2. Turk Telekom turned the ball over 20 times in that game and shot just 45% from two point range and just 2 of 9 (22%) three-pointers. Unics Kazan meanwhile is also left just playing out its Last 16 campaign despite beating Benetton Basket 81-59 at home to improve to 2-3. Head coach Aco Petrovic's Russian team allowed just 9 points in the third quarter and 24 points in the second half. Kazan held Benetton to 46% shooting from near range, forced 19 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 36-25. Forward Vladimir Veremeenko led the way with 18 points and 8 rebounds while guard Terrell Lyday had 14 points and center Dmitry Sokolov added 13 and guard Marko Popovic chipped in 11 points. With little riding on this game, Petrovic may look to give his bench players more minutes in a top-level competition with the Russian playoffs nearing.

Dmitry Sokolov - UnicsUnics Kazan drained 4 three-pointers in a 2-17 run to start the fourth quarter in pulling away for a comfortable 66-86 victory at Turk Telekom to finish its Eurocup Last 16 Group J campaign on a high note. The victory gives Unics a 3-3 record in the group while Turk Telekom dropped to 1-5. Both teams were already eliminated from contention for the Final Eight coming into the game in the Turkish capital. The contest was a back-and-forth affair for three quarters with neither team able to pull ahead by more than 5 points. And the game was knotted at 54-54 going into the fourth. Kazan's Marc Jackson converted a three-point play and grabbed a steal to start a layup and then hit one of four triples in the decisive 2-17 surge to wrest control of the game. Dmitry Sokolov led Unics with 21 points while Jackson had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Tariq Kirksay added 12 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists and Igor Zamansky scored 10 points. Rod Blakney scored a game-high 24 points for Turk Telekom though he was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. Kris Lang was the only other player in double figures for Telekom, which was playing without Michael Wright.

Erwin Dudley started the game with the first basket for the hosts and Kazan jumped ahead 4-8 thanks to 5 points from Sokolov. Mutlu Akpinar drained a three-pointer and Blakney gave Telekom back the lead 9-8. Sokolov answered with three baskets and Jackson scored twice as Kazan led 16-18 after one period. Lang knotted the game to start the second quarter, but 2 Sokolov foul shots and a Petr Samoylenko basket had Kazan ahead 18-22. Blakney and Samoylenko swapped triples and Blakney’s next three-ball pushed the hosts back into the lead, 26-25. Blakney knocked down 4 free throws and Lang hit three straight baskets to keep Turk ahead. And Blakney hit just before the break for a 37-34 Telekom cushion at intermission.

Sokolov's score opened the second half, but Blakney and Asim Pars hit as the lead grew to 5 points. Jackson knocked down a three and then converted a three-point play to bring Unics within 45-44. Zamansky's long ball knotted the affair at 49-49. Kirksay's three-pointer had Unics ahead 52-54 before Baris Ermis made it 54-54 after three periods. Jackson converted a three-point play to start the fourth and then his steal ended in a Zamansky layup for a 54-59 lead. Akpinar made 2 foul shots to get Turk Telekom on the board. But then Unics heated up from long range with Samoylenko, Kirksay, Jackson and Zamansky hitting consecutive three-balls to complete the 2-17 surge for a 56-71 advantage midway through the fourth. Ermis dunked to stop the run and Akpinar drained a three-ball to make it 61-71. But Jackson hit again and then Kresimir Loncar made three baskets in a final 3-13 push for the run-away win.
