THE TAKE

Spanish champion Unicaja hosts Croatian champion Cibona Zagreb on Thursday night in Malaga, Spain, in a game that could have major repercussions on the race for spots in the Top 16 from Group B. Unicaja is currently on the outside looking in with a 3-6 record that leaves it tied for sixth place, while Cibona is tied for fourth with a 4-5 mark. Only the top five teams in each group are guaranteed a place in the next round. Cibona held off a wild Unicaja comeback to win 87-83 when these teams met in November. In that game, Cibona led by as many as 20 points in the second half, but was held to just 5 in the last 10 minutes as Unicaja stormed back to tie the game and force overtime, where Jerry McCullough scored 9 straight points to seal the hosts' victory. Davor Kus led Cibona with 20 points, while Berni Rodriguez scored the same amount for the visitors. Unicaja has had its troubles this season on the offensive end, averaging just 71.1 points per game, which matches the second fewest in the league, and committing a league-high 19.2 turnovers per game. The team is not suffering from a lack of talent, with four players averaging double-figures in points, led by Rodriguez (13.1 ppg., 3.1 apg.). Daniel Santiago (10.9 ppg.) is the main man in the paint, but is also a liability at the foul line (54.2%). Point guard Pepe Sanchez is back from injury to help lead the attack and generate opportunities for backcourt mate Carlos Cabezas (11.1 ppg.), swingman Jiri Welsch (10.9 ppg.) and forward Carlos Jiminez (7.9 ppg.). Power forward Florent Pietrus (4.7 rpg.), who comes off the bench to lead the team in rebounding, may see some extra minutes trying to stop Cibona's big gun, Brent Wright (14.4 ppg., 7.9 rpg.). Point guard Kus (13.7 ppg., 94.8% FT), Andrew Wisniewski and swingman Chris Warren (13.4 ppg., 45.7% 3FG) are Cibona's prime perimeter threats with McCullough (9.3 ppg.) always ready off the bench to spell relief. On defense, Marton Bader (5.6 rpg.) leads a three-headed center rotation, which includes Luksa Andric and Jurica Zuzua, that will try to wear Santiago down inside. If Pietrus and maybe even Kostas Vasiliadis can stop Wright, there will be added pressure on Kus and Warren to perform, something that could work in Unicaja's favor at home. A key for Cibona to stopping the hosts will be limiting Santiago's effectiveness and hoping that he has another poor night from the line.

Quotes Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"The game against Cibona is very important. We have to know how to handle the situation of having, starting this week and during the whole month, two different lineups due to the absence of Marcus Faison in Euroleague games, which will mean more responsibility for the rest of our perimeter players and our youngsters. Cibona is a great team that has already shown itself to have a deep roster, with plenty of players who have both skills and athletic talents, and is a direct rival of ours for qualification to the next phase. We have to count not only on everyone's full concentration, but also on the maximum support from our fans, in order to achieve this victory."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona
“Although there were two All-Star games in the past period for my players, we managed to gather seven practices to regain our strength and refresh the team. It was not easy for my players, as they worked really hard, but practices are just one side of the story... Games are what counts. We travel to Malaga to play the team that had an earthquake in Badalona, but they used it to consolidate their team. It is obvious that they have a strong team, but they haven't found themselves yet. Our goal is to get out on the court and give our best. If we want to have our chance for the victory, we must try to control the game for 40 minutes. It is going to be hard, but it can be done.”

Players

SANCHEZ, PEPE
Unicaja
"For us, the game against Cibona is very important in terms of going forward in the competition with options of qualifying for the next phase. Thursday's game is crucial, above all considering that we play at home. If we don't win, our options of reaching the Top 16 will be reduced, while with a victory, they will grow a lot. After losing in Zagreb, which happened in overtime by a small difference - 4 points - we have an opportunity now to beat them and make up the point difference. We'll have to work hard, like in all Euroleague games, but we want to add this victory."
KRASIC, BARISA
Cibona
“The time has come for our first away win in this year's Euroleague. We do not have any special goals for 2007. Our goal is always the same, to win the next game on the schedule, home or away, no matter in which competition. Unicaja has an extremely powerful team, with NBA players at each position, so we have to give our best. We have worked hard in the past few days and I hope it will be seen in the games in front of us.”
Pepe Sanchez - Unicaja Unicaja rejoined the Top 16 race in Group B by beating Cibona 73-67 at home in Malaga, Spain on Thursday. With identical 4-6 records, both teams now join a four-way tie for fourth place in the group with Partizan and Lottomatica Roma. Daniel Santiago led the winners with 14 points, including a game-ending tip-in to secure a tiebreak advantage should Unicaja and Cibona be tied head-to-head at the end of the regular season, too. Berni Rodriguez and Kostas Vasileadis each added 13 points for Unicaja, while Pepe Sanchez dished 7 assists. Andrew Wisniewski led Cibona with 22 points, Jerry McCullough added 16 and Marin Rozic had 10 for the guests. Unicaja used a 13-0 early run to get the lead for good and boosted its margin to 62-43 with 8 minutes to go. Wisniewski and Roxic brought Cibona back to within 71-67 with seconds to go before Santiago scored his key basket at the buzzer.

After Cibona started the game with a jumper by Wizniewsky and an inside shot by Brent Wright, Unicaja responded with a 13-0 blast that marked a distance for almost the rest of the game. Santiago dunked to start it, while Jiri Welsch and Rodriguez scored twice each, the latter with a triple and fastbreak layup to end it and force a Cibona timeout. The visitors lifted their heads with a 2-6 answer highlighted by a dunk from Marton Bader, but after that, Unicaja rolled out the next 7 points. Rodriguez struck again from downtown, while Carlos Cabezas and Carlos Jimenez finished fastbreaks. Rodriguez returned with the last word of the quarter, a backdoor cut assisted by Sanchez that left Unicaja in charge 12-24 after 10 minutes.

Marin Rozic started the second quarter with a three-point basket-plus-free throw for Cibona, but soon Unicaja had another go-to ace in Vasileiadis. He dropped a triple and a jumper nearly as long, assisted Iñaki De Miguel on a basket and then finished an 8-0 Unicaja spurt with a layup of his own to make it 33-15, the biggest lead yet. After McCullough downed a pair of shots for Cibona, Vasileiadis struck again from downtown. His partner in the run was Sanchez, who set up several of those baskets and shortly after passed for his sixth assist already on De Miguel's three-point play to make it 39-23. Wizniewsky, McCullough and Chris Warren worked the rest of the quarter for Cibona to cut the difference to 42-29 before the halftime buzzer sounded.

Andrew Wisniewski - CibonaUnicaja kept shining on defense after the break, while Wright picked up his fourth foul already. Bader followed a free throw with a five-meter jumper to give Cibona some hope at 42-32. Rodriguez rescued Unicaja with his third triple and even when Wisniewski shined with a reverse layup, Welsch answered from downtown to make it a 14-point game, 48-34. Santiago intimidated the whole Cibona frontcourt, but still Wisniewski got through Unicaja's defense for a three-point play. Bader nailed a jumper, too, for the guests, but Santiago bettered it with a layup-plus-free throw. Bader scored again in penetration while Wisniewski buried a jumper to get Cibona within 51-43. Unicaja called timeout and re-ordered its defense, after which Santiago dunked twice and Sanchez scored in the low post to make it a 14-point game, 57-43, after three quarters.

Cibona needed a quick comeback in the final quarter to keep its chances alive, but foul trouble and many turnovers allowed Unicaja to stay ahead. Florent Pietrus scored inside for the hosts while Vasiliadis buried a huge three-pointer for a 62-43 Unicaja lead with 8 minutes to go. Wisniewski and Warren combined for 4 quick points but Sanchez brought the crowd to its feet with his floating layup. McCullough had 4 points and fed Rozic for an easy basket in a 0-6 run that got the guests within 64-53 midway through the fourth quarter. Sanchez scored again but Rozic erased it with a power layup and Wisniewski buried a shot from downtown to cut the deficit even further, to 66-58. A flagrant foul by McCullough allowed Sanchez and Santiago to seal the win, 72-60, with 3 minutes to go. Cibona kept fighting for the point difference in case of a tie at the end of the regular season, but with Santiago's late tip-in, Unicaja got both a well-deserved win and a tiebreak advantage.

Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"My players completed an excellent work tonight. We had limited rotations and the players were tired. During 35 minutes we defended excellently, and we attacked well with the exception of free throws. I think it is a record the many possessions in which Cibona ran out of time. The starting point was to neutralize Brent Wright and Carlos Jimenes managed to shut the rival power forward again. The last basket was important for us. The Top 16 is still our goal, andpossibly the key game will be in Belgrade. I think everything will be solved in the last game for us."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona
"Congratulations to Unicaja for their game. Ours was bad, we didn't have any control in defense, we were not tough enough. In the second half we improved that and with a zone we managed to take control of the rebound and get into the game for the last three minutes. In the end we did not play smart and we didn't defend the last play well. Any team which wants to be serious cannot afford 22 turnovers and that its two best players are almost out of the game."
