THE TAKE

Lietuvos Rytas hopes to continue its amazing run in Group B when it hosts Prokom Trefl Sopot at the Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania on Wednesday. Lietuvos Rytas (4-2) has shown it is not just any Euroleague newcomer during a four-game winning streak in which it has registered consecutive road wins against Winterthur FCB, Efes Pilsen and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Prokom Trefl (2-4), meanwhile, hopes to break its three-game losing streak as soon as possible. L. Rytas counts on a dynamic frontcourt in which any player can assume the scoring duties at any time. Haris Mujezinovic (11.8 ppg, 55.5% 3FG) shared MVP honors last week, leading his team to a big win in Tel Aviv, while Robertas Javtokas (9.2 ppg, 6.6 rpg.) is one of the best defensive centers around. Matt Nielsen (8.1 ppg., 4.8 rpg.), Andrius Slezas (3.4 ppg.) and even youngster Povilas Cukinas (2 rpg.) can come off the bench and contribute at both ends. The mission will not be easy, as Prokom has one of the toughest frontcourts around. Adam Wojcik (12.3 ppg.) in its prime offensive threat near the basket, but blue-collar center Michael Andersen (8.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg.) has given a new dimension to this team, allowing Wojcik to face the basket and take the occasional jumper. Prokom can count on two valuable players near the basket, aggressive forward Filip Dylewicz (5.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg.) and do-it-all big man Tomas Masiulis (6 ppg., 72% 2FG, 5.6 rpg., 2.6 apg.). L. Rytas will be concerned about slowing small forward Goran Jagodnik (15.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg), a great shooter and a mismatch for any defense due to his combination of size and shooting range. On the other hand, Prokom will be concerned about the hosts' star backcourt, featuring talented playmaker Roberts Stelmahers (10.1 ppg., 4.3 apg.), all-around threat Fred House (13 ppg.) and rising star Simas Jasaitis (9.8 ppg., 4.6 rpg). The matchup between House and Prokom's Christian Dalmau (11.1 ppg., 65.3% 2FG) will be one of the most interesting ones of the night. Stelmahers will go against Istvan Nemeth (9.1 ppg., 3 apg.) in a high-profile battle between two of the best pass-first playmakers in the competition. Above all, the team which controls the game tempo will have more chances to win the game, as L. Rytas feels more comfortable with an up-tempo style, while Prokom prefers to slow down the pace, looking for Dalmau, Jagodnik and Wojcik at its main offensive weapons.

Lietuvos Rytas stretched its Group B winning streak to five games when as it downed visiting Prokom Trefl Sopot by a clear 82-69 on Wednesday. The winners, who started the season with a 0-2, guaranteed themselves at least second place in the group with a 5-2 record halfway through the regular season. On the other hand, Prokom drops to 2-5 and must do better to repeat its Top 16 appearance of a year ago. L. Rytas forged early double-digit leads and guarded them comfortably all the way until the final buzzer. Roberts Stelmahers put on a great performance for the hosts with 17 points. Simas Jasaitis added 15, Fred House had 13 and Mindaugas Lukauskis finshed with 12. For Prokom, Goran Jagodnik led three players in double digits with 15 points plus 11 rebounds. Adam Wojcik contributed 14 points and Istvan Nemeth posted 12.

Stelmahers opened the first quarter with a layup that Robertas Javtokas followed with a two-handed dunk. Prokom answered with 3 quick points by Jagodnik and a jump hook by Michael Andersen, good for a 4-5 edge. The visitors' advantage didn't last long, however, as L. Rytas instantly improved its offense as Stelmahers made free throws and fed House for a layup in a 7-0 run that Javtokas capped with a free throws, forcing Prokom to call timeout at 11-5. It got worse for Prokom as House took over with consecutive three-pointers that came off back-to-back steals by Simas Jasaitis, giving the hosts a 13-0 run and a 17-5 margin. House stayed on fire with another layup while Stelmahers added a five-meter jumper before Adam Wojcik scored inside to bring Prokom within 22-11 after 10 minutes.

L.Rytas used its strong man-to-man defense early in the second quarter to hold Prokom scoreless for 2 minutes until Tomas Masiulis hit free throws. The teams exchanged turnovers until Haris Mujezinovic scored inside, but then Wojcik dunked to cut the difference to 24-15. Mindaugas Lukauskis tried to widen the gap again with a three-pointer, but Istvan Nemeth fed Masiulis for a fastbreak dunk to get Prokom within 7 points, 27-20. A put-back basket by Jagodnik forced L.Rytas coach Neven Spahija to bring defensive anchor Javtokas back on court. Stelmahers then followed free throws off a technical foul on Jeff Noordgard with a triple to boost the L.Rytas lead to 34-24. Free throws by Wojcik and Jagodnik got Prokom within 37-31, but Stelmahers made foul shots again while Lukauskis dunked to help restore a double-digit lead, 41-31, at the half.

The third quarter started with a three-point festival as House, Wojcik, Nemeth, Lukauskis and Stelmahers each scored from downtown to fix the score at 50-40. L.Rytas switched to zone defense and Prokom started to struggle on offense. When Jagodnik picked up his fourth foul, the guests were left without another weapon. L.Rytas found many open shots along the way, as Lukauskis and Jasaitis fired in jumpers. Jasaitis soon added a basket-plus-free throw to make it a 19-point game, 58-39. Prokom finally found the way to the basket once Ali Bouziane and Filip Dylewicz combined for all points in a 0-7 run, but Jasaitis and Mujezinovic nailed back-to-back triples to keep the hosts safely ahead, 67-48 after 30 minutes.

In the final quarter, L. Rytas kept on going as Jasaitis scored from inside and Matthew Nielsen joined him. Prokom's attempt to run back into the game didn't paid off as Nielsen dominated on defense and on the boards. Javtokas detonated a dunk that showed how the Prokom defense had little energy left. Indivdual effort by Nemeth produced a four-point play that got Prokom within 73-56. Soon, Filip Dylewitcz dunked, Andersen added points and Jagodnik scored a basket, but it was way too late for a comback. Euroleague newcomers Lietuvos Rytas recorded another blowout home victory 82-69 and extended their winning streak to five games.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Lietuvos Rytas
"We deserved this victory. We had good and bad moments for the first 35 minutes of the match, but the final 5 minutes were catastrophic. Our bench players didn't contribute as much as they could. Two important games against Zalgiris Kaunas and Cibona are waiting for us in five or six days. That is why I used so many rotations tonight. I think we showed good basketball during the first half of the group stage, but a long season is waiting for us. We are in a really good shape now and nobody could actually stop us right now."
KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"I want to congratulate our opponents for a great victory. Our game was built on individual efforts while Lietuvos Rytas played like a team. We made a lot of turnovers and it was the key factor in our loss."

Players

HOUSE, FRED
Lietuvos Rytas
"Collective play was a key to the victory tonight. The first two quarters went really well and despite some let owns in the second half we've won the game. It is just another Christmas present for our fans. I hope that next week we will have a good game against Cibona as well. I didn't have a good game in Zagreb, so I definitely want revenge in Vilnius."
MUJEZINOVIC, HARIS
Lietuvos Rytas
"I think this victory is really important for us. We won three big road games and we kept going well at home tonight. The most important thing that led us to the victory was team play. My own game was just a piece of the puzzle. Everyone played equally good. Prokom didn't come up with surprises, because we have fully analyzed their system of play. After this game we are just two victories away from the spot in the Top 16."
PACESAS, TOMAS
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We didn't follow our coach's instructions strictly. He told us to play in one way, but certainly we played in another one. We had such an unsuccessful game that it's hard to believe we could play so poor. They killed us with fast movement and rebounding. Everyone on the opposing team played really well. The starting lineup and players that came off the bench were really good. We made too many mistakes though. As a result these mistakes did not allow us to reduce the deficit."
MASIULIS, TOMAS
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We saw two absolutely different teams on court tonight. I totally agree that our opponents were much stronger than our team. The hosts revealed our weaknesses in all positions. Lietuvos Rytas won against Prokom Trefl due to fastbreaks and open shots. I must say that Lietuvos Rytas is in a good shape at the moment. Of course, I am not satisfied with my personal performance when my team loses."
