THE TAKE

One of the newest Euroleague teams will look for its first win in Group C against a classic European basketball powerhouse when Eldo Napoli hosts Aris TT Bank in Naples, Italy on Wednesday at 20:45 CET. Napoli (0-2) has taken back-to-back losses against CSKA Moscow and Zalgiris Kaunas, while Aris (1-1) beat Fenerbahce in its home opener in Thessaloniki before losing against CSKA in Moscow. Above all, a defensive game is expected in Naples, since Napoli and Aris rank 21st and 23th in scoring, respectively, in the Euroleague so far this season. Center Giannis Giannoulis will not be able to help Aris in this game, so Jeremiah Massey, Mike Wilkinson and Kevin Fletcher are expected to see extended playing time. Massey will have the tough mission to go against Ansu Sesay, one of the most versatile power forwards in the competition, while Wilkinson, by far the most solid Aris player so far, will test his rebounding skills against Mason Rocca and Alessandro Cittadini. The point guard battle will be interesting, too, as Napoli features Tierre Brown, the third top scorer in the Euroleague so far at 22.5 points per game. Aris has its own floor general in Terrell Castle, who shares playmaking duties with Spyros Panteliadis, a slasher ready to change any game. Napoli has two electric swingmen in Michel Morandais and Jeff Trepganier, who is one of the best defenders in the competition and must be ready to show it against scoring machine Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. Aris needs its frontcourt to stay out of trouble in order to win the game, as well as solid contributions from perimeter threats Simonas Serapinas, Savvas Iliadis and Abdul-Rauf, who are expected to see extended playing time since Alex Scales has just recovered from a minor injury. Meanwhile, Brown, Trepagnier and three-point threat Jay Larranaga will try to speed up the game tempo to get Napoli more chances to win. Expect nothing but a intense Euroleague games as both teams try to take another step towards reaching the Top 16.

Quotes Head Coaches

BUCCHI, PIERO
Eldo Napoli
"I'm sure our fans will push us to our first European victory. We're growing up and we have all the tools to do it. The team is charged up, and the push from our fans will allow us to fight until the final second to reach our goal."
MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"I have no special feelings returning back to Napoli. It has been two years since I left the team and now I am dedicated to Aris. Napoli has incredible talent and unbelievable players as everybody can really score and lead the team offensively. It will be a tough game because of their home advantage. Undoubtedly, Napoli has bigger potential than us, but we have to work in defense and improve our ability to select shots to take this win on the road. This game looks like a chance for us! We have found our chemistry over the last two weeks and we are doing extremely well even without some key players. Both Scales and Kalaitzis will be back but they are not 100% ready to play because they are not in a good physical condition. The team has worked really hard to be ready for this game and be sure that Aris will fight for 40 minutes to get this crucial win."

Players

MALAVENTURA, MATTEO
Eldo Napoli
"This will be a crucial match for us. We are ready and we want get our first win in the Euroleague. We want to show to everybody that we are a team that can play its cards to go ahead, and are not here just for an appearence. We are doing the right things to improve our play, and I'm sure that we'll fight until the final buzzer with a push from our fans."
ILIADIS, SAVVAS
Aris TT Bank
"It is a very difficult game for us! We won against Napoli in the preseason but this Euroleague game is much more serious. I strongly believe that Aris has the ability to beat Napoli on the road. It's true that we are playing really well these days and I hope that we can prove it on Wednesday. In such games, the team should be focused on every ball during the game and reduce its turnovers. Despite our improvement on defense, we need to work a lot on offense to cover our offensive gaps. To be honest, our team seems fully prepared to win this game both physically and psychologically."
Alessandro Cittadini - Eldo Napoli celebrates Eldo Napoli gave its fans a thrilling way to remember the club's first-ever Euroleague victory by downing Aris TT Bank 71-69 in Group C on Wednesday. Valerio Spinelli buried a pair of free throws with 4.9 seconds left to seal Napoli's glory after 40 minutes of a back-and-forth scoreboard. Both teams are now 1-2 in the group standings. Alessandro Cittadini led the winners with 12 points while making 5 of 5 two-pointers. Jeff Trepagnier added 11 points, Spinelli 10, while Mason Rocca ruled the boards with 14 rebounds. Alex Scales paced Aris with 17 points and Mike Wilkinson posted a double-double of 12 and 11 rebounds. Napoli led by as many as 13 points before a 5-23 Aris blast bridged the halves and set the stage for a back and forth struggle that only ended when Spinelli was cool as ice with the game on the line.

Aris jumped out to a 0-4 lead as Castle and Sigalas downed their first jump shots each. Wilkinson and Dmitris Tsaldaris with a three-pointer boosted the lead to 4-9 before Cittadini started getting hot. The Napoli forward hit a pair of his own jump shots and then returned after some back-and-forth scoring to land a shot that tied it up, 12-12. However, as Cittadini got whistled for a third foul, Wilkinson kept the guests close enough to allow Alex Scales, on a basket-plus-free throw to send Aris ahead again, 14-17. A steal by Brown forged another tie, 17-17, before free throws by Morandais and a fastbreak basket by Rocca comopleted a 7-0 Napoli run to a 21-17 lead. Brown returned with a bank shot and Rocca closed the quarter with a layup to give the hosts a 25-21 advantage after 10 minutes.

Mike Wilkinson - Aris TT BankJeff Trapagnier extended Napoli's lead to begin the second quarter, and the hosts relied on Rocca and Matteo Malaventura to anchor the defense. Both teams suffered from poor shooting at long distance now, but Aris got in trouble when a tecnhical gave Sigalas his fourth foul. Malaventura's free throws meant a 30-21 advantage for Napoli. Aris was not able to reply as Trapagnier's triple gave the hosts their first double-digit advantage, 34-21. Aris head coach Andrea Mazzon called a timeout and soon the visitors were mounting a rally. Rocca had a shot blocked by Massey that sent Tsaldaris for another a triple that got Aris within 34-30. Rocca found a low-post basket to stop Napoli's slide, but Abul-Rauf's bomb ended the second quarter with a 36-33 scoreboard.

Almost a minute passed before Simonas Serapinas opened the second-half scoring with free throws for Aris. Morandais soon answered with a layup and Napoli switched to a zone defense as a 39-39 tie stood for 3 minutes. Aris woke up first, as a penetration by Scales made it 39-43. After a Napoli timeout, Spinelli came in and scored a layup, and after Wilkinson was whistled for an offensive foul, Trepagnier drilled the triple that gave Napoli a lead back at 44-43. Savvas Iliadis took it back for Aris with his basket, but Spinelli used his quickness to drive and tie again, 49-49, to set up an exciting last quarter.

The first points of the last quarter were an omen of sorts, as Spinelli's free throws put Napoli up 51-49. Eldo's defense was now more intense and Abdul-Rauf's offensive foul gave Simone Flamini a chance to make it 54-49 from downtown. Aris called timeout, after which Scales made free throws by drawing Rocca's fourth foul. Rocca soon aswered, however, with a layup and free throw that boosted the lead to 57-51 score. Although Rocca would hit again from the line and Malaventura from the arc, Wilkinson kept Aris close enough that when Scales landed a triple and a two-pointer, it was all tied up again, 60-60. Rocca left after his fifth foul, but Flamini rebounded to start a fastbreack that Malaventura ended with a three-pointer for a 64-60 Napoli lead. But Scales answered with a bomb, also, promising a thriller to the end as the lead went back and forth. Castle gave it to Aris and Flamini took it back with 4 free throws that made it 69-65 with just a minute to go. Iliadis missed 2 key free throws then, but got the rebound and scored just before a fastbreak by Abdul-Rauf gave Aris a seemingly miraculous 69-69 tie. But with just 4 seconds to go, Spinelli was sent to the foul line where he didn't miss the chance to give Napoli its first victory ever in the Euroleague, 71-69.

Head Coaches

BUCCHI, PIERO
Eldo Napoli
“My players were too nervous tonight. The two defeats against Siena and Bologna damaged our self confidence. I knew it wouldn't be a spectacular game because it is always difficult to be spectacular against Greek teams. They played tough and well-focused, but we were able to build around our defense. I also wants to underline the good games played by our Italian players like Malaventura, Flamini and Spinelli. It was difficult but we are now happy to have gained our first Euroleague victory ever.”
MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"First of all I'd like to say thanks to Napoli's fans. I was here for three years and they welcomed me in a great way. We knew this match would be difficult and we tried to shuffle the cards in some way, to change the way we play in certain situations. We wanted to control Napoli and we did it in the second quarter and at the end of the third quarter as well. But a game can be lost if you miss four free throws at the very end, and that is what happened today unfortunately."

Players

SPINELLI, VALERIO
Eldo Napoli
"It was a great win, because the whole team played with the heart. I was coming off a period where I didn't make free throws, but tonight I scored the last two and I'm happy. Coach Bucchi made a brave decision, he has great American players, but he used the Italian guys in the clutch. I think because they have more heart and they know the Euroleague better because they watch it on TV. The Euroleague is a fantastic experience because I'm doing it with my hometown team and I hope it'll continue like this."
FLAMINI, SIMONE
Eldo Napoli
"I'm very happy with my performance and for my first victory in a great competition like the Euroleague. I did my job, which is setting in the game from the bench and trying to change something, to leave a mark. I had a great feeling tonight and I'm happy about my contribution to this victory."
PANTELIADIS, SPYRIDON
Aris TT Bank
"I had the ball for the last shot... I looked at the basket, but the ball works that way. It can go in or out. We are disappointed because we deserved this victory, but we look forward to our next games."
