THE TAKE

Two giants of the Euroleague clash in a much-anticipated Group C matchup on Thursday when Panathinaikos hosts Real Madrid at the Athens Indoor Olympic Hall (OAKA). Undefeated through six games, Panathinaikos is the exclusive group leader, while Madrid, which is 5-1, looks to knock the Greens from that spot. Both teams are considered serious Final Four contenders this season and this game could prove to be a preview of bigger ones down the line. Many players on both teams are familiar with the opposition. Madrid center Lazaros Papadopoulos, for instance, spent two seasons at Panathinaikos under head coach Zeljko Obradovic earlier in his career, winning the 2002 Euroleague there. The team's have played much different styles this season, with Panathinaikos proving to be one of the Euroleague's best attacking teams, aceraging 88 points per game, while Madrid boasts one of the best defenses, allowing only 69 points per game. On the other hand, the Greek champs have won this season by scoring as few as 66 and Madrid showed it can run up the score last week when it posted 104 against Roanne. The Greens have their full lineup back after injuries and illness limited them in recent weeks, restoring a deep backcourt with several big-time players, including Dimitrios Diamantidis, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Vassilis Spanoulis and Sani Becirovic, while Kenendy Winston adds athleticism at the small forward spot. Madrid counters with the likes Louis Bullock, Raul Lopez, Kerem Tunceri and young Serio Llull, with dynamic scorer Charles Smith and Michalis Pelekanos at small forward. Together these teams may have the deepest sets of perimeter players in Europe. The battles inside see matchups of skill and strength at forward, where Madrid's Axel Hervelle, Alex Mumbu and Felipe Reyes will pit themselves against Demos Dikoudis and Mike Batiste. However the pivotal matchup could be against the massive Papadopoulos, with Andrija Zizic, Kostas Tsartsaris and Dejan Tomasevic trading off in an effort to find the recipe for success. A game like this is very difficult to foresee, as the roster depth and knowledge of the coaches makes anything possible. However the coaches may also use this game as a sparring session, leaving more ammunition in their bags for games with even bigger stakes down the line. That being said, both sides will give everything for the win, as Madrid knows that it can create headlines by ending Panathinaikos's current 10-game winning streak dating back to last season – the Greens have also won nine in a row at OAKA – and the hosts can make noise by remaining undefeated and knocking of another contender. What's certain is that the viewers of this heavyweight matchup are the true winners.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
“We are facing a very good team with an inclination towards the pick and roll and great ability in open court. They like to run the fast breaks and generally their philosophy demands quickness and many substitutions. Real Madrid, a club where I worked for three years and I personally respect very much, uses all 12 players and if someone watched their last win over Chorale Roanne, he could have easily realized that their coach counts on all his players. A team with such a roster and rotation is always appreciable and definitely we need to work hard to stay unbeaten. Panathinaikos is a big club, our fans give us great help in OAKA and I am sure we will give our best effort.”
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"We play against the European champion, a team which is still undefeated in the Euroleague and they also play at home, which will make it an everything but easy game. It is a good test for us to see our real level, playing against a powerful squad and in their home. Our goal against Panathinaikos is to play a solid game, in which we try to improve the things we failed on in the last games, and work our hardest to be happy at the end of the game about our effort. We want to be at Panathinaikos' level and reach the end of the game with options to win. It won't be easy, but playing in Malaga 48 hours later won't be either as December comes stuffed with hard games. But we have to be satisfied with our work so far since we are here with only one defeat in the Euroleague."

Players

ZIZIC, ANDRIJA
Panathinaikos
“We know it is a very big game against a team that we do respect. I believe Real Madrid is the best team in Spain and one of the top in Europe, with great history and many good players on the current roster. We are talking here about a battle between two European giants with so many titles, but there is no doubt that the home-court advantage is very important for our team. It is a big plus, which is enough to take us to another victory with a serious performance in front of our crowd. We are getting better and better every week and the biggest weapon of Panathinaikos is the ability to bring out new protagonists every night.”
PELEKANOS, MICHALIS
Real Madrid
"I never like to narrow it down to individuals when talking about rivals. Even less with Panathinaikos, because I think they reflect, probably better than anybody, the concept of team. Any player can contribute to the collective and any player can hurt you but their strongest weapon is collective play. Their coach has been doing a great job for a long time and he knows what he wants from each and every player, as he demands the maximum from each individual to obtain good results. Each player has a well-defined role and they all accept it without problems. They have great quality and they are a team tough to beat in any situation, but especially when they play at home.
Mike Batiste - Panathinaikos Defending champion Panathinaikos reached the end of the regular season's first half as the Euroleague's sole undefeated team by rallying to defeat its closest Group C challenger, Real Madrid, by 92-85 at home in Athens, Greece in a thriller on Thursday. Down 71-77 with 5 minutes to play, the Greens buttoned down their defense and scored at will in a 21-8 finishing run to raise the roof again at OAKA arena. Panathinaikos is now 7-0 and has the Euroleague's biggest first-place lead, two victories more than Madrid and AXA F.C. Barcelona, both 5-2. Mike Batiste led the winners on the inside, with a team-high 25 points. Sarunas Jasikevicius controlled the show with 21 points and 6 assists, while Sani Becirovic added 10 points for Panathinaikos. Madrid, which lead sporadically throughout the game, got 19 points from Louis Bullock, 14 from Kerem Tunceri and 12 from Michalis Pelekanos. Down 71-77 in the final quarter, Panathinaikos got his only points of the night on a triple from Dimitris Diamantidis, who otherwise did it all with 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.

Both teams came out shooting blanks, but it wasn't long before they got into rhythm. Jasikevicius knocked down a jumper to get the hosts on the board first, only to be see Bullock's three-pointer put Madrid up 4-5. Demos Dikoudis answered for the Greens with a pair of baskets, but Lazaros Papadopoulos scored and Bullock combined to keep Madrid ahead. With Jasikevicius pushing the tempo to frantic levels, Panathinaikos exploded for an 9-0 run in which Batiste and Kennedy Winston had 6 points, giving momentum to the home side. Finally, Madrid ended a three-minute dry spell with a Tunceri triple and soon Bullock unleashed another bomb from downtown to pull the guests within 21-19. The Greens kept their composure though, and Becirovic came off the bench to convert a three-point play and fix the score of the opening quarter at 26-20.

Kerem Tunceri - Real MadridThe second quarter opened with Madrid making a huge statement by scoring almost at will against the usually swarming Panathinaikos defense. A drive by Raul Lopez ignited a 1-10 run in which he and Charles Smith contributed 8 points. Panathinaikos took a timeout, after which Vassilis Spanoulis connected from downtown, but Lopez copied him to tie the game at 35-35. Madrid was controlling the game's rhythm now, as a layup by Blagota Sekulic allowed the guests to burst in front 37-39. The Greens regained the advantage thanks to Jasikevicius, who first found Batiste for a reverse two-handed dunk and then scored himself. But on defense, Panathinaikos failed to stop the guests. Behind triples by Bullock and Axel Hervelle, Madrid held a gutsy 46-47 lead at intermission.

The second half commenced with Papadopoulos scoring on an impressive spin move against Batiste. Panathinaikos faced trouble offensively against the very energetic Madrid defense, for whome Smith made 4 steals in just 90 seconds. Madrid failed to convert the extra possessions, however, and instead an emphatic rejection by Diamantidis of a layup try by Smith brought the massive OAKA arena crowd to its feet and charged up the Greens. Soon enough, Spanoulis capped a 6-0 run for a 52-52 tie, and moments later, Winston buried a corner triple that vaulted Panathinaikos in front, 57-54. Instead of folding, Madrid counter-punched with a 0-8 run behind a pair of huge three-point shots by Tunceri. Free throws by Fragiskos Alvertis and Jasikevicius kept the Greens close on Madrid's heels, but a pair of baskets by the visitors' own Greek ace, Pelekanos, helped then retain a 65-68 edge with one quarter left to play.

Jacikevicius signalled his team's intentions with a game-tying triple to open that final quarter. Soon, Alvertis copied him, gunning from downtown to seize a new Panathinaikos advantage, 71-68, right after Bullock's own triple was discounted when he was whistled for kicking out while shooting. Madrid was hardly giving up, and before the OAKA crowd knew it, had clawed back into the lead behind a stone-wall defense. Bullock hit 4 foul shots and then Hervelle capped a 0-10 run that made it 71-77 for Madrid with 5 minutes left. Diamantidis turned the tide for Panathinaikos with a much-needed triple and Batiste hit free throws that made it 76-77. With the quarter ticking away, it was Euroleague action at its finest, with two teams fighting like warriors to grab the win. When Tunceri nailed a triple, Becirovic matched it. Then, with 2:15 remaining, Jacikevicius hit a jumper that put the Greens in front, 81-80. Following a Madrid timeout, Batiste muscled his way inside for a basket and Jacikevicius extended the lead with a pair of free throws. After Lopez misfired from downtown for Madrid, Spanoulis punished the guests with a three-pointer that provided the decisive 88-81 margin with 30 seconds to go. With the OAKA fans going wild, Madrid came up short of any late heroics and failed to stun the Euroleague Champions in what was a breathtaking match.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"It was a very hard, physical match. Real is a very good team with a lot of quality and it proved it tonight. The first problem we faced was defensive rebounding. In the early minutes of the match, they grabbed too many offensive rebounds. Also, our defense was not terrible. In the second half we made a lot of unforced errors and as a result they scored many points in the fast break. So, all in all, I'm very satisfied with the result. And the truth is that in the final four minutes – from the time Real was in front 71-77 – we played very smartly in the offensive end. Finally, I want to praise the fans for the atmosphere they created. Their contribution was invaluable."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"Congratulations to Panathinaikos. It was a great, very competitive match. Real Madrid showed here that we are determined to play better and be more successful this season. As a matter of fact, right now we are a better team than we were two hours ago. I think that this match against Panathinaikos was a great lesson for us. I am very proud of my players and our performance has boosted our confidence and is a clear indication that we are going to play even better in the future."

Players

BATISTE, MIKE
Panathinaikos
"It was a tight game, but in the end we showed why we are the champions of Europe. We played hard and made some key plays on offense and defense. However, I’ve got to give a lot of credit to Real Madrid. They are a very good team and, for me, they are one of the favorites to make it to the Final Four. Regarding my performance, as I've said in the past, we have talent on this team. Any player can have a good game. Today it was my luck. Some of my early shots went in and I got into rhythm. I'm happy not only for my performance, but also for my team."
SMITH, CHARLES
Real Madrid
"We played really well in both ends of the floor. We came up big. Unfortunately we lost, but I think that we should be proud of ourselves. We'll see them again in Madrid. It's going to be interesting. Yeah, I stripped the ball six times tonight. I was just trying to make some things happen. I wish I could have gotten a couple of calls, but I don't want to take anything from them. They played a great game. Besides, that is why they are the champions. We'll have another opportunity to beat them in Madrid and we'll try to make the most of it. If we play aggressively, I think that we can beat anybody. I believe in my teammates and my coach. We are a very good team."
REYES, FELIPE
Real Madrid
"It was a very good game, but in the end we failed to win it. They have a great team, but I'm sure that if we play like that in Madrid, we'll beat them for sure. Our performance definitely makes us more confident, as now we think that there isn't any team that we cannot beat. We should be proud of our performance."
