THE TAKE

The Turkish champs and the Italian champs will clash in Istanbul with pride on the line when Fenerbahce Ulker hosts Montepaschi Ulker on Wednesday night. Fener will look to end the season on a high note and avoid losing its last game of the season at home to Montepaschi for the second year in a row. Last season Montepaschi eliminated FB Ulker in the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Montepaschi (3-2) will return to the playoffs, where it will face either Panathinaikos of Partizan, but Fener’s Top 16 struggles (1-4) mean that head coach Bogdan Tanjevic's men will watch the next phase from home. The hosts snapped out of a poor run of results by besting rival Efes Pilsen in the Turkish League and hope that momentum will carry over. Montepaschi won the first meeting between these sides last month 87-79 as Terrell McIntyre exploded for 24 points and 6 assists. McIntyre was the star of the show last week too as head coach Simone Pianigiani’s men sealed their quarterfinal place by beating Cibona behind 29 points from the All-Euroleague playmaker. However McIntyre, who leads the Top 16 with 20.2 points per game, will sit out this game, thrusting Morris Finley into the spotlight. He will have to contend with Marques Green and Omer Onan. The hosts' biggest advantage is in the paint, where rebounding king Mirsad Turkcan leads a stacked rotation that also features Oguz Savas, Semih Erden and Gasper Vidmar against Montepaschi short-handed frontline that’s without injured All-Euroleague performer Ksistof Lavrinovic. The likes of Ben Eze, Shaun Stonerook and more than ever Tomas Ress must play big to make up for his absence. Montepaschi may also be without scorer Henry Domercant, who suffers from a sprained ankle, leaving more minutes for Rimas Kaukenas, Romain Sato and Marco Carraretto to share. FB Ulker could also go with a different look, using the 2.06-meter Emir Preldzic at point guard, while Gordan Giricek, Devin Smith or Damir Kaan Mrsic fill the wings. Although the game is for protocol only, neither team will be take it lightly as the home side looks to give its fans a farewell present will many Montepaschi players look to earn more minutes ahead of the playoffs in what could shape up as a tough game.

Quotes Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Unfortunately we had our mission damaged because of the long-term injuries. On the other hand, there’s nothing to be pessimistic about because we have a young team, which has bright future. We take the Montepaschi Siena game as a challenge for honor. We will try to avenge the first game not just for our honor, but also for our fans. We will be happy if we can give a present to our fans by winning our last game of the season in the Euroleague."
PIANIGIANI, SIMONE
Montepaschi Siena
"The game does not matter for qualification, but I think Fenerbahce would like to finish with a success, and we'll probably use more players not getting big minutes previously, testing different options. We have a lot of little injures and the next week without games will be crucial to recover our best shape and team play."

Players

ONAN, OMER
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We are really sad that we couldn’t able to repeat the success of last season by reaching the quarterfinals. Our group was tougher than the past season, but we couldn’t make it anyway. We had a terrible game against Cibona Zagreb at home and broke all the season’s efforts at once. Now we have nothing to do. But this is not a reason to surrender to Montepaschi Siena. We will try to win the game to make our fans happy."
CARRARETTO, MARCO
Montepaschi Siena
"We're already qualified, but this is an away game and we must be focused, because we’re playing against a strong team that played a great regular season and we faced last year in the playoffs. We'll play in Istanbul to prepare to be at our best for the playoffs. Players that have played less minutes previously will get a chance in Istanbul for more minutes and we must be ready any the time the coach calls us to do our best and improve our time on the court."

Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We would have liked to give our fans a victory in the last game at home, but we failed. Actually we came very close to winning. We could have played the last minutes of the game with Mirsad Turkcan and Marques Green. But I decided to keep them at the bench because Mirsad has stitches just over the eyebrow and Green has pain on the back. So I take the responsibility if there’s someone to blame. We started the season with injuries. That was a big trouble for us. But when we started to get our players back from the injury, unexpectedley it become worse. I hope that we recover our game soon and play better in the Turkish League."

Players

MRSIC, DAMIR
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Unfortunately we were not able to satisfy our fans once again in the Euroleague this season. It’s a pity to finish the Top 16 and the season like this. Of course it’s not easy to be motivated when you have no target in the game other than just winning. Now we have nothing to do but get motivated for the Turkish League."
