THE TAKE

A historic sports rivalry is ready for its 38th showdown in Europe's top competition when Real Madrid hosts Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv in Top 16 Group F on Thursday night. The two teams faced each other most recently in last year's Top 16, when Maccabi beat Madrid twice to win the group, get the home court advantage in the Quarterfinal Playoffs and eventually reach the Euroleague final. Madrid leads Group F with a 2-0 record and would put one feet in the playoffs with a win against Maccabi, second at 1-1. Meanwhile, Maccabi must bounce back from its 20-point loss against Regal FCB last week right away. Madrid has problems at point guard, as Raul Lopez is questionable for this game. If Lopez stays sidelined, experienced pass-first playmaker Pepe Sanchez and up-and-coming talent Sergio Llull are ready to share the point guard duties. Llull will use his explosiveness and athleticism against Carlos Arroyo in a key matchup for the outcome of this game. Maccabi has struggled when Arroyo has been stopped, just like last week in Barcelona. Dee Brown, however, is ready to come off the bench and contribute right away. Maccabi is really deep and experienced at the wings, with Marcus Brown and Omri Casspi playing major roles. Derrick Sharp and Tal Burstein provide clutch play and know-how off the bench. Brown is ready for a big scoring fight against Louis Bullock, as they rank first and 11th, respectively, in the Euroleague's all-time scoring charts. In fact, Brown needs just 35 points to become the first player to reach 2,500 in competition history. Casspi will have a tough matchup against experienced shooter Alex Mumbru and athletic forward Quinton Hosley. Marko Tomas is ready to help Madrid with deep range and driving skills. Maccabi's main concern will be stopping Felipe Reyes, an incredible rebounder with solid post skills and a soft touch. Reyes is the true leader of a star-studded frontcourt that features versatile big man Axel Hervelle, two-time Euroleague winner Tomas Van den Spiegel and athletic forward Jeremiah Massey. Reyes will be involved in a big matchup against Lior Eliyahu, even though Maccabi rebounding ace Charles Gaines may see extra playing time against him. Van den Spiegel and Hervelle have the tough mission to go against D'or Fischer, the Euroleague's index ranking leader this season. Yaniv Green and Gaines will offer intensity, defense and power off the guests' bench. Maccabi must play up-tempo and get Arroyo and Brown involved to swing the game in its favor on the road. Madrid must power the offensive boards, stop Fischer and not allow Arroyo to display his creativity. It should bea fantastic game at Palacio Vistalegre on Thursday, perhaps just like last season when Maccabi needed overtime to win a 100-103 classic.

GAME NOTES

Real Madrid
  • Guard Louis Bullock scored a season-high 19 points last week against Alba Berlin. It was the second week in a row that he has improved his season high.
  • Big man Felipe Reyes needs 3 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Center Tomas Van den Spiegel has twice won the Euroleague. His team beat Maccabi in the final both times.
  • Forward Axel Hervelle recorded the only double-double of his Euroleague career against Maccabi last season in Madrid. Hervelle had 20 points and 11 rebounds in his team’s 100-103 overtime loss. Hervelle also had a career-best 32 index that night.
  • Real Madrid leads the all-time series against Maccabi 21-16, although Maccabi has won the last three meetings.
Maccabi Electra
  • Guard Tal Burstein is closing in on 1,000 points for his Euroleague Basketball career. He enters this week’s game against Real Madrid with 991 points in 136 career games. He also needs just 2 more three-pointers to reach 100 for his Euroleague career.
  • Guard Marcus Brown needs 35 more points to become the first player in Euroleague Basketball history to reach the 2,500-point mark for his career.
  • Guard Derrick Sharp came off the bench to shoot 6 for 6 from the line in the final 23 seconds of overtime to help Maccabi beat Madrid 100-103 on the road in the Top 16 last season. Aside from Sharp 6 points, current Maccabi players only combined for 6 more points in that game.

Quotes Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"Having won the first two games of the Top 16 doesn't guarantee anything. We have to keep working and be ready to play a tough and balanced game against a Maccabi team who goes for everything in this Euroleague, and will be coming to Vistalegre biting after their last loss. They are getting to their best level little by little. They had some changes during the season and they are close to showing their full potental. For us it is a key game and that's why we ask aour fans to come to Vistalegre to support us and we hope they have a great behavior like in the last game against Barcelona."
GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"I hope this visit to Spain will be different than the two previous ones. Real won several of their last games after being down by a big margin and came back in the last minutes. I hope it will help us realize how important is every possession and that nothing is over until the buzzer against this team. We are ahead of two games in a row against Real, and after them we'll know in what situation we are. Real against Maccabi is one of the greatest and longest traditions in European basketball, so every game is special. Maccabi has good memories from the games against Real last year, and I hope it will stay this way this year as well."

Players

MASSEY, JEREMIAH
Real Madrid
"For us it is the game of the season so far. Despite having a 2-0 in the Top 16 we have a lot at stake with this game in order to make the playoffs. Against Barcelona we suffered a lot, but the mental strength of this team and the support of the crowd in the stands were the keys to our win. We hope to see our arena packed again and supporting us in the same way for this game, as we will be facing one of the best teams in Europe. Maccabi has great individuals and they are experienced in this kind of games. We have to defend as a team and be tough since minute one trying to control the defensive rebounds."
SHARP, DERRICK
Maccabi Electra
"The game in Barcelona is over, so we have a new game ahead of us and we'll need to win this one. Every game is the most important of the year that we must win, nothing is new. It's a road game, but we have to believe in ourselves. Real knows we are a good team not only because of this season but also because we have tradition. They'd probably like to revenge for the game in Madrid last year, but I hope the bigger pressure will be on them. Anything can still happen in this group. We could finish first or last, so we have to think about each game seperetly, try our best to win and see what's the bottom line."
Louis Bullock - Real MadridReal Madrid stayed undefeated in Top 16 Group F and got closer to the Quarterfinal Playoffs by downing Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv 98-79 in front of 11,800 fans at Palacio Vistalegre in the Spanish capital on Thursday night. Madrid improved to 3-0 and will clinch a playoff spot if it beats Maccabi in Tel Aviv in Week 4 and Barcelona downs Alba in Berlin. Meanwhile, Maccabi dropped to 1-2, is third in Group F and needs to bounce back from this road loss right away to keep its playoff hopes alive. Louis Bullock paced the winners with 24 points, the most he had in a Euroleague game since January 2006. Alex Mumbru and Sergio Llull each added 13, Felipe Reyes had 12 while Tomas Van den Spiegel contributed 10 for Madrid. Carlos Arroyo led Maccabi with 21 points, Lior Eliyahu added 20 on 10-for-11 two-pointers while D'or Fischer had 12 for the guests. Maccabi overcame an early deficit, as an outstanding Arroyo gave the guests a 11-16 margin. Bullock brought Madrid within 18-20 after 10 minutes while a dunk by Van den Spiegel gave the hosts a 28-26 edge. Reyes, Marko Tomas and a wild triple by Hervelle boosted Madrid's lead to 42-36 at halftime. An unstoppable Bullock simply took over late in the third quarter to improve the hosts' lead to 70-61 after 30 minutes and Maccabi was not able to change things in the fourth quarter.

Carlos Arroyo - Maccabi ElectraMaccabi coach Pini Gershon shocked everyone by placing Charles Gaines in the starting lineup. He got Maccabi going with a tip-in but a jumper by Bullock tied it at 2-2. Reyes took over with a fast break layup while Mumbru struck from downtown for a 7-2 Madrid lead. Omri Casspi shined with a fast break dunk that Fischer followed with an alleyoop layup to get Maccabi within 7-6. Reyes sank free throws but Casspi answered from downtown and Arroyo added a driving layup to make Maccabi regain a 9-11 edge. Arroyo capped a 2-11 run with a jumper, as Mumbru stepped up with a put-back layup. Madrid improved its ball circulation with Pepe Sanchez on court but free throws by an unstoppable Arroyo made it a five-point game, 11-16. Bullock buried a catch-and-shoot triple but Fischer silenced the crowd with an alleyoop dunk. Bullock made 4-for-4 foul shots but an off-balance basket by Eliyahu restored a 18-20 Maccabi lead at the end of the first quarter.

Quinton Hosley simply took over with a wild alleyoop dunk early in the second quarter while Van den Spiegel added a jump hook, but Eliyahu scored around the basket and dunked it to keep Maccabi ahead, 22-24. Bullock shined with a layup but Eliyahu banked in a close jumper. Van den Spiegel kept pacing Madrid with free throws and a two-handed dunk, good for a 28-26 edge. Madrid called timeout and improved its defense right away. Meanwhile, Eliyahu scored in transition but Marcus Brown picked his third foul. Reyes hit his trademark jumper from the top of the key but an alleyoop dunk by Gaines kept Maccabi as close as 31-30. Tomas buried a corner triple while an alleyoop dunk by Hervelle boost the hosts' lead to 36-30. Eliyahu and Llull traded jumpers but free throws by Arroyo kept Maccabi within 38-34. Free throws by Sanchez and Arroyo, as well as a buzzer-beating triple by Hervelle fixed the halftime score at 42-36.

Felipe Reyes - Real MadridFischer and Mumbru traded easy layups immediately after the break. Arroyo nailed a three-pointer off the dribble but Jeremiah Massey beat the guests' matchup defense with a power layup. Fischer made free throws but Bullock answered from downtown for a 49-43 Madrid lead. Fischer kept pacing Maccabi with a dunk that Massey copied in the other end. Felipe hit foul shots that Arroyo bettered with a layup-plus-foul to keep the guests within 53-48. Maccabi had entered the foul bonus and Bullock made the most out of it with free throws. Derrick Sharp nailed his trademark corner triple that Mumbru matched with an unbelievable three-point play. Bullock took over with a fast break layup but Fischer answered from downtown to bring Maccabi back to life, 60-54. Van den Spiegel hit a hook shot while Mumbru added a seven-meter bomb to break the game open, 65-54. Sharp and Bullock traded triples - with some trash talking along the way - while Arroyo got Maccabi within 68-59. Reyes made foul shots while Eliyahu beat the buzzer with a big basket for a 70-61 score after three quarters.

Bullock - who else? - struck from downtown over Fischer to break the game open, 73-61, early in the fourth quarter. Eliyahu tried to ignite the guests' comeback with a layup, as Madrid now tired to run the game clock down. Gaines scored in transition to give Maccabi some jope, 73-65. Hosley dunked it, however, as the hosts kept following their game plan. Van den Spiegel sank free throws that Sharp bettered with his third three-pointer to keep Maccabi in the game midway through the fourth quarter. Hosley made foul shots while Llull added an eight-meter bomb that sealed the outcome, 82-71, with 4 minutes to go. Eliyahu scored again in transition but Llull answered from downtown to send the crowd to their feet, 85-73. Arroyo took over with a driving layup, as both teams fought for points differential now. Reyes sank a turnaround jumper before Tomas buried a circus shot from downtown. Llull buried his third triple in this period, allowing Madrid to get a big home win that sent the Whites closer to the playoffs.

Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"I am happy with this win and the final outcome. Nothing is decided yet despite our 3-0 record. I am satisfied with the work the team did as a whole. We showed character to fulfill the goals we set in the beginning of the season. We are beginning to see the results now. We managed to keep a high rhythm against a tough Maccabi Electra. That opened a door for us and we managed to break the game when it happened. Pepe Sanchez showed he can help the team. This was an important game for him."
GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"We were in the game for three quarters, but Madrid scored 3 three-pointers and we committed two mistakes that sealed the outcome. Madrid deserved to win this game, and the key was the 3 three-pointers by Sergio Llull, that did not allow us to return to the game. We did not perform well in defense, allowing too many easy shots. The real difference in this game should have been 8 points. The next game in Tel Aviv is a do-or-die one for us. It is very difficult, but we will try to win the game and get the tie-break advantage."

Players

BULLOCK, LOUIS
Real Madrid
"I am very happy. We managed to beat a great team that we were looking forward to beating since last season. I am scoring a lot of points, but that is not my main thought right now. I am focused on defense and in helping the team win games. I am playing more aggressive in defense. We still have a lot of work to do, especially after what happened last season. A 3-0 record doesn't mean anything, we cannot say anything until we play all six games."
TOMAS, MARKO
Real Madrid
"Our goal before the game was winning, of course. And we managed to do it by a very good margin. I didn't play well in the beginning, missing some shots, but then I think I managed to help the team with important things in the final minute. I am happy with the game I played and with the game Madrid played tonight."
ARROYO, CARLOS
Maccabi Electra
"It was a very complicated game for us. We played well until the third quarter, but then we lost control. We are now facing an uncomfortable situation in this group right now, but we still have some key games to play. We lost by a large number of points and that is very important: Madrid is in good momentum. It is a very physical team, like all Spanish teams. They play really well at home, we respect them a lot, but we hope to have our chance in Tel Aviv."
