THE TAKE

Alba Berlin will try to keep its playoff hopes alive when it hosts Regal FC Barcelona on Thursday for a Top 16 Group F clash at the state-of-the-art O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany. Alba will likely need to win all of its remaining games and wait for other scores to have a chance to advance to the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Meanwhile, Barcelona enters the game with a 2-1 Top 16 record and is in a good position to reach the next round, but a loss at the O2 World would almost erase its chances to win Group F. Alba got stronger earlier this week by inking center Blagota Sekulic, who will help the German champs offset the loss of Patrick Femerling, sidelined because of a knee injury. Sekulic is ready to offer rebounding skills and know-how to a frontcourt that already includes power forward Ansu Sesay, blue-collar big man Adam Chubb and versatile forward Aleksandar Nadjfeji. Sekulic and Chubb are ready to share minutes at center against Daniel Santiago and David Andersen. Meanwhile, Sesay will test his shooting skills against Ersan Ilyasova, while Nadjfeji will have the tough mission to guard a natural-born mismatch in Fran Vazquez, whose shot blocking skills and athleticism turn him into a one-of-a-kind player. Barcelona is still without Jaka Lakovic who underwent nasal surgery, so Victor Sada and Andre Barrett will share the point guard duties against Rashad Wright and Steffen Hamann. Of course, Alba will be very concerned with stopping Juan Carlos Navarro, who has been in great shape recently. Despite not having Lakovic, Barcelona can count on Navarro. Lubos Barton and Gianluca Basile to pull the trigger from downtown. Basile and Roger Grimau will be equally focused on stopping Immanuel McElroy, Alba's best one-on-one player due to his versatility and explosiveness. Navarro and Basile will test their unlimited range against Julius Jenkins and Casey Jacobsen. Alba must try to run its offense through McElroy while getting Ilyasova and Andersen into foul trouble. Meanwhile, Barcelona must be its usual self in defense while trying to get its shooters involved in transition. This is a do-or-die game for Alba, so expect thousands of fans at the 02 World ready to push their team to new heights in this year's Top 16.

GAME NOTES

Alba Berlin
  • Guard Casey Jacobsen has made at least 1 three-pointer in eight straight Euroleague games. He is shooting 43.2% from downtown in that stretch.
  • Head coach Luka Pavicevic has used the same starting five – Steffen Hamann, Immanuel McElroy, Casey Jacobsen, Ansu Sesay and Adam Chubb – in 12 out of 13 Euroleague games this season.
  • Big man Blagota Sekulic could make his Alba Berlin debut against Barcelona on Thursday.
Regal FC Barcelona
  • Guard Juan Carlos Navarro is on the verge of joining Euroleague Basketball’s exclusive 2,000-point club. Navarro enters the game at Alba Berlin needing just 8 more points to reach 2,000 – a mark previously attained only by five players, three of whom did so this season, including injured teammate Jaka Lakovic.
  • Navarro has made at least 1 three-pointer in seven straight games.
  • Guard Gianluca Basile has knocked down a three pointer in each of his last eight Euroleague games. He is shooting 58.3% from downtown over that span. Basile leads the Top 16 in three-point accuracy (64.3%) and his 55.6% success rate for the season would be the best of his career.
  • Big man Ersan Ilyasova was the Top 16, Week 3 MVP after dominating Alba Berlin to the tune of a career-high 30 points on 6-for-7 three-point shooting, plus 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. It was his fourth double-double of the season.
  • Big man Fran Vazquez is 2 blocks shy of reaching 100 for his Euroleague career. He would become the seventh player in competition history to reach that plateau.
  • Guard Victor Sada dished at least 2 assists in each of his last eight Euroleague games, but has not score a field goal since Week 8.

Quotes Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"We hurt our chances to go to next round by losing at home against Real Madrid. Now this game against Barcelona for us is a game that we must win to preserve our small chances to move on to the next round. We will give all our best and we hope to have the support of our fans doing so, because we are facing a really tough challenge against one of the best teams in Europe. Against top level Euroleague teams, and especially against the Spanish ones, it is necessary to raise the speed of the game. That means not to run the game, but to raise the speed of thinking and reacting to the point that we can contain the game against a team like Barcelona, which plays very fast on both ends of the floor. Our goal is to stay competitive as long as it is needed and to look for our chances, which, of course, not will be many, but certainly will be throughout the game."
PASCUAL, XAVIER
Regal FC Barcelona
"This will definitely be one of our key games in the Top 16. It can define most of our chances in this phase, so it is a final for us. Alba Berlin's home is where Tau almost lost the game and where Real Madrid was trailing by 17 points during the third quarter, despite being able to take the final win. We now come from difficult days in which we played two straight games and were out of the Spanish Cup early. I hope those factors do not affect us in our important game against Alba."

Players

WRIGHT, RASHAD
Alba Berlin
"After three losses we're standing with our backs to the wall. The one-week break gave us a little rest, which we needed. But now we have to play as hard as we can and try to get this much-needed win. Against such a good team like Barcelona, we have to play the whole 40 minutes at our highest level. In our last two games we learned, that 30 even good minutes are not enough to win a Top 16 game. In Barcelona two weeks ago at a certain point of the game, they made the deciding plays, while we did not make them. We have to learn this lesson and try to stay focused until the very end on Thursday."
SANTIAGO, DANIEL
Regal FC Barcelona
"Alba played good home games against powerful teams like Real Madrid and Tau Ceramica, but I think we can win. However, I think we must be prepared to suffer, and for that, we will have to keep our concentration to the maximum level."
Juan Carlos Navarro - Regal FC BarcelonaRegal FC Barcelona closed to within a victory of reaching the Quarterfinal Playoffs when it disposed of host Alba Berlin 57-75 on Thursday at the o2 Arena, site of the 2009 Euroleague Basketball Final Four. Barcelona dominated with defense and led 19-40 at halftime en route to its third straight Group F win. While putting on a defensive clinic, holding Alba to just 32 points after three quarters, Barcelona also made some offensive history thanks to one of its biggest stars. Shooting guard Juan Carlos Navarro opened the second half with a three-pointer that saw him join the competition’s exclusive 2,000-point club, just the sixth player this decade to reach that mark. Navarro finished by scoring 13 of his 18 in the second half to pace the winners. Barcelona is now 3-1 and will wrap up a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs with a win in either of its remaining games. David Andersen added 10 points as 11 different players scored for the winners, who outrebounded Berlin 21-34. Immanuel McElroy paced Alba with 11 points and Rashad Wright added 10. Berlin, meanwhile, fell to 0-4 and elimination. It will have to watch the playoffs from home and wait for the Final Four to come to town in early May.

Rashad Wright - Alba BerlinDefenses ruled early before Navarro started the scoring by cutting back-door for a one-hand shot. When Santiago assisted Andersen for a dunk, Barcelona led 4-0. McElroy started Alba's scoring column with free throws and Casey Jacobsen's jumper soon drew Alba within 4-6. Andersen banked in a shot from the post, and Navarro hit a fastbreak triple as Barcelona pulled away 4-11, forcing an Alba timeout. McElroy responded with a tough triple for the hosts, then assisted Rashad Wright for another from the corner to suddenly make it 10-11. Andersen answered again, however, while Santiago blocked Aleksandar Nadjfeji and assisted Barton for a corner triple. Then Sada stole and scored to make it, just as suddenly, 10-18, where the scoreboard stayed until the first quarter finished.

Barcelona's run continued into the second quarter as Sada and Fran Vazquez got to the basket early for layups. When Ilyasova busted a triple from the corner, Barcelona had scored 14 unanswered points and owned a 10-25 lead. Wright finally ended Alba's bleeding with a steal and tough layup, but nothing came easy for the hosts. Sada made it look easy with an alley-oop pass dunked by Vazquez. Grimau did the same with an open layup follow by an open triple to make it 14-32. Andersen was silky on another jumper and, after an Alba timeout, added Barcelona's first free throws by drawing Ansu Sesay's third foul to make it 16-36. On the other hand, Alba managed only free throws until Nadjfeji got loose for a fastbreak dunk. Sada's connection with Vazquez worked for another pair of dunks in the half's final minute to punctuate Barcelona's first-half domination at 19-40.

David Andersen - Regal FC BarcelonaNavarro started the third quarter with triple from the top to reach 2,000 points for his Euroleague career, only the sixth player to do so this decade. Now, however, Alba responded with Wright shooting from the corner McElroy getting a pair of layups and newly-signed big man Blagota Sekulic scoring inside to make it 28-46. Navarro was not in the mood for a comeback, however, and buried another triple. By the time he and Sada hit pairs of free throws, it was 30-53, and though Alba got the matching baskets now, by Wright and Adam Chubb, Barton got the last one of the third quarter for a 32-55 score.

Andre Barrett got into the Barcelona scoring fun with a triple to open the final quarter, and when Navarro canned his fourth, the visitors reached their high lead of 34-61. Alba started polishing up the score, with some baskets and a three-pointer by Jacobsen. Barcelona was content to trade points even at the expense of a Top 16 defensive record try. The visitors rested their big guns down the stretch, but even their replacements put on a show for Alba's 10,000-plus fans, who had to be wondering if a masterful Barcelona might return to o2 Arena at Final Four time.

Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"Barcelona's aim today was to pass to the next round and that's how they approached the game with very serious and throughout-the-whole-game aggressive defense. They appeared physically and mentally strong against us and we did not really answer the physical and mental presence of Barcelona today. We did not play weak or bad, but we could not find our advantages because of Barcelona's defense. The more the game went, the insecurity came even more into my team and with this kind of opponent the confidence grew on the other side. We have a big challenge immediately coming up on the weekend and we have to put this loss behind us very fast."
PASCUAL, XAVIER
Regal FC Barcelona
"We are happy with the win and I think we played a very serious game tonight. Alba plays pretty good basketball, but we played very solid in defense and kept Alba's score low. Our very good defense enabled us to establish our fast break game, which gave us many easy points in the first two quarters. In the third quarter, the level of both teams was pretty much the same, but we held our lead until the end."

Players

HAMANN, STEFFEN
Alba Berlin
"Barcelona put up an impressive game tonight. It showed from the first minute that they were willing to play again here in Berlin in May and I think with this kind of game they showed today, they have good chances to do so. They did not allow any easy points under the basket and stopped our fast breaks. Nevertheless I think, that we could have performed a little better in the first half, but at least after the break we did not give up and were able to avoid a blowout. This was important for us, because we have an important weekend ahead of us with the final four of the German Cup."
ANDERSEN, DAVID
Regal FC Barcelona
"It is not easy to beat Berlin in their gym. I think playing here is very dangerous, because Alba is a team that can put together points very quickly. But we played very good defense tonight, were concentrated from the very beginning and attacked them inside to draw fouls or get easy baskets. That worked out very well. Our defense led the way and in offense we found our rhythm early to build a lead of 20 points, which we held throughout the second half. After this very good work, we have to think about the next game against Real Madrid to get the first position in our group."
