THE TAKE

Maccabi Electra will try to keep its share of first place in Group C when it hosts fifth place Maroussi BC on Thursday at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv. Maccabi knocked off previously undefeated Lottomatica Roma on the road in overtime in Week 4 to improve to 3-1 and earn a share of the group lead. Now head coach Pini Gershon’s men will try to remain perfect at home. Meanwhile Maroussi, which is 0-3 at home, will play its second road game. Head coach Georgios Bartzokas’s squad won its only previous road game at Union Olimpija in Week 2. Maroussi will unveil Stevan Nadfeji this week, adding the veteran forward to the mix as the club tries to overcome a slew of injuries that have cut into the rotation. Only seven players have played in all four games so far for Maroussi and one of them, Levon Kendall, is out for the rest of the regular season with an ankle injury. Maroussi will needs its depth to tackle a Maccabi squad that goes 12 deep. Maroussi will send Billy Keys, who knows Tel Aviv well from his season at Maccabi’s crosstown rival Hapoel, and Marios Batis to challenge the home teams point guard tandem of Andrew Wisniewski and Doron Perkins. The main duel at shooting guard pits Jamon Lucas against Maccabi’s top scorer, Alan Anderson. Defensive ace Michalis Pelekanos could also get the call to guard Anderson, while Nadfeji and Maroussi’s No. 1 scorer Kostas Kaimakoglou battle small forwards Chuck Eidson and Guy Pnini. In the paint, Maccabi can rotate Stephane Lasme, Maciej Lampe, D’Or Fischer and Yaniv Green, while Maroussi relies on Jared Homan and Dimitrios Mavroeidis. Both teams have a sweet-shooting forward that can play inside or out, David Bluthenthal for Maccabi and Pat Calathes for Maroussi. The key to this game could be on the glass as Maccabi, with a deeper frontcourt, is second in the league in rebounding with 34.8 rebounds per game and Maroussi is last with just 27.5 boards per outing. Another crucial element could be how Maroussi handles the ball against a Maccabi defense that leads the Euroleague in steals. Maroussi showed in Ljubljana that it can handle the pressure on the road, so now the task will be to slow the tempo and neutralize the hosts’ advantages to keep the game close and have a shot in the fourth quarter.

Quotes Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"We picked up good momentum with the win in Roma, so I hope the one-week break won't stop it. We want to finish the first leg with a win to sum up a very good start of the season, but in order to do that we'll need to be focused for 40 minutes. I don't see Maroussi as a team with just one win so far, because I look also on the qualifying round results and see that they knocked out two Euroleague clubs such as Aris and Alba, and for me it shows how dangerous they can be. They have size and guards who can be dangerous. I just hope the fact that they got their only win in their only road game doesn't say anything about what will happen on Thursday."
BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Maroussi BC
“What you can say about Maccabi? It is one of the greatest legends in basketball history, a club with glorious history, big tradition and an outstanding mark. Regarding the current team, I think that they are improved compared to last season, because they have more athletic skill and alternatives. It’s going to be exciting for our team to play at Nokia Arena and our target is to stay competitive and earn as much as we can from that game. In such a game you can try and create your character.”

Players

PNINI, GUY
Maccabi Electra
"We can't under-estimate any team we face in the Euroleague. Maroussi proved to be the best team in Greece other than the two giants, and it says how dangerous they can be. We need to focus on ourselves and give our fans what they have got used to seeing from us so far - tough and aggressive defense but also a lot of points as we scored in most games so far. The win in Roma gave us a lot of confidence, and week by week things start to look better for us. I hope we'll bring that to the court and get another key win in the group in front of our fans."
MAVROEIDIS, DIMITRIOS
Maroussi BC
“Apart from its history and basketball tradition, Maccabi is a team with a lot of talent, experience, quality and speed. No doubt, it is expected to be one of the most difficult games we have ever played. We are going there to play the best we can and we’ll see. The key is not to let them run and play with their enthusiasm.”
Maciej Lampe - Maccabi ElectraMaccabi Electra secured at least a share of first place in Group C at the midway point of the regular season after beating Maroussi BC 75-67 in front of a packed house at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv. Andrew Wisniewski scored 20 and Maciej Lampe had a career-high 19 points plus 9 rebounds for the Israeli champs, who improved to 4-1. Maccabi next visits Union Olimpija. Maroussi fell to 1-4 and heads to face CSKA Moscow next week. Maroussi looked strong in the second quarter before the hosts relied on David Bluthenthal and Lampe for a 9-0 charge that gave Maccabi a 41-40 halftime lead. Maccabi slowly grew its lead throughout the second half and although Maroussi never went away, it could not mount a serious charge down the stretch. Maroussi’s biggest weapon was its 21 offensive rebounds, but that would prove to be not enough to register a road win in Tel Aviv. Billy Keys paced the visitors with 14 points and Jamon Lucas and Dimitrios Mavroeidis added 12 each in defeat.

Maroussi won the opening tip, but it was Maccabi that struck first, as Alan Anderson fed Lampe in the paint. Keys put Maroussi ahead with a three-pointer, but Lampe could not be stopped inside and kept the hosts going. Lucas showed his skills with a pair of quick baskets as Maroussi increased its lead to 7-10. Lampe went from scorer to provider, grabbing a Wisniewski miss and dishing to Anderson for a slam. Wisniewski followed with a steal and layup as Maccabi went back ahead. Maccabi’s defense produced another steal and layup, this time by Stephane Lasme, and the home crowd started rocking. Jared Homan quieted them with a score inside to tie the game and soon after he stripped Chuck Eidson, leading to a Lucas basket and a Maroussi lead. Doron Perkins assisted to Lasme to knot the game at 15-15. Both teams failed to convert in the last minute of the quarter, leaving the score deadlocked after 10 minutes.

Dimitrios Mavroeidis - Maroussi BCD’Or Fischer came off the bench to start the second quarter and immediately made an impact, taking a pass from Eidson and sinking a baseline jumper. Keys shined with an acrobatic drive and a three-pointer to keep Maroussi level. Perkins and Mavroeidis traded baskets and then Eidson and Igor Milosevits swapped layups as the scoreboard showed 24-24 midway through the quarter. The visitors went ahead on a Mavroeidis basket, but Perkins responded for Maccabi. Mavroeidis sayed hot with a basket-plus-foul and then Kucas went through the Maccabi defense to increase the Maroussi lead to 6. Wisniewski hit back for Maccabi only to see Stevan Nadjfeji score his first points for Maroussi from downtown to make it 28-35. Pat Calathes also hit from behind the arc to stretch the lead to 8 before Lampe scored inside. Maccabi further trimmed the deficit on free throws by Wisniewski and Lampe and then David Bluthenthal made it a 1-point game with a triple from the corner. Lampe beat the buzzer for a tip-in to cap a 9-0 run and give Maccabi a 41-40 halftime edge.

Michalis Pelekanos put Maroussi on top again with a triple to open the second half. Wisniewski took charge with a drive through the Maroussi defense and then a steal and dish to Lampe for an alley-oop. Lampe then fed a cutting Bluthenthal for a basket-plus-foul, though the shooter did miss the resulting free throw for the first time this season. Kostas Kaimakoglou narrowed the gap before Wisniewski produced a steal and easy layup. Lampe fired in a three to establish a career high in points already, 19, and Guy Pnini sank a fadeaway jumper to stretch the lead to 8. Homan scored inside and Nadjfej sank a pair of free throws to keep it close. Keys fed Lucas to cut the gap to 2, but Eidson wowed the crowed with a circus shot-plus-foul. Pnini finished a fast break with a layup and Perkins rejected Keys on the final play as Maccabi took a 61-54 lead into the fourth quarter.

The two teams traded miscues early in the deciding period before Milosevits drilled a long jumper to give Maroussi hope. Wisniewski responded with a three that kept Maccabi in control. Lucas added to Maroussi’s offensive rebound tally with a second-chance basket. Pnini picked up a loose ball underneath, drew a foul and sank 2 free throws and then Wisniewski stole the ball, drew a foul and sank 2 free throws as the Maccabi lead hit 9. Maroussi would not quit as Mavroeidis scored another second-chance basket in the paint. Wisniewski darted through the Maroussi defense for a basket, but Keys bettered him with a three that made it 70-64. However Maroussi would not get any closer. Milosevits fouled out and Anderson sank the resulting free throws. Lasme also fouled out for Maccabi, but Maroussi was unable to capitalize as Maccabi hung on in the final minute to secure the win.

Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"You can't finish the game without turnovers and without allowing offensive rebounds to your opponent, but we allowed too many of both of them. We also had bad shooting day from the three-point and free throw lines. We needed to play with more patience today. Many of our turnovers we shouldn't have made. The win of CSKA today in Vitoria shows how difficult this group can be for everyone, and everything can happen between these two teams and us. The zone defense we played was to stop their slashing to the rim, but it hurt our rebounding. We used Derrick [Sharp] to wake up the team and the fans, and it helped make a difference. We had two-and-a-half players in good shape today and we won the game, so it’s a good thing."
BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Maroussi BC
"Congratulations to Maccabi for this win. I want to congratulate my players as well, who made a great effort today. The game developed as we expected. We wanted to control the tempo, play long possessions and tough defense and we managed to do that, but down the stretch we had some difficulties. Maccabi allowed us a lot of open shots from the behind arc, but we didn't make them. We also missed too many free throws. If we had made those, I believe we could have put Maccabi under pressure. We took many rebounds, especially on offense, as a result of our good fight. We tried hard and maybe we can also learn a lesson from this game, hopefully not to miss those open shots in the future."

Players

LAMPE, MACIEJ
Maccabi Electra
"We made too many mistakes and it dragged us to a close game. We made too many mistakes on defense, but a win is a win, and I'm just happy we earned this victory. We could still improve in a lot of fields. We committed too many turnovers and maybe we just need to play more simple."
BLU, DAVID
Maccabi Electra
"The bottom line is that we won and that's all that matters now. They took a lot of shots from long distance and the rebounds fell far, so it allowed them a lot of rebounds, but the important thing is that we won. We'll need to play better in the next game in order to win. Start the game better and not allow so many three pointers."
KEYS, BILLY
Maroussi BC
"They are a tough team, but we had a chance to win the game, so it's a bit disappointing we didn't make it. Now we need to forget about this game, take a shower and move on to the next game, because I think we can still do good things in the Euroleague."
