The Take

Khimki Moscow Region will try to use a quirk in the schedule that has it playing its first two games of the season at home to its benefit when it hosts Zalgiris Kaunas on Friday. Khimki outlasted Valencia Basket 75-70 in its opener last week behind 19 points from Alexey Shved and 16 points in 15 minutes off the bench from debutant Thomas Robinson. Zalgiris also won a tight game in Round 1 by edging Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade 78-76 with veteran Paulius Jankunas leading the way. The aforementioned players will be among the key factors in this week’s duel. Robinson and Malcolm Thomas will be tasked with stopping Jankunas and Brandon Davies inside, while Zalgiris will turn to Kevin Pangos and Vasilije Micic to contain Shved. Khimki will also rely on scorer James Anderson and defensive ace Charles Jenkins on the wings against Axel Toupane and Edgaras Ulanovas. Zalgiris used fantastic shooting and a deep rotation in its win last week and will look to do the same on Friday. One of these teams will enter the weekend undefeated after what promises to be another close encounter in the Russian capital.

Head Coaches

BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Khimki Moscow Region
"Nothing but a difficult game. They have a bunch of players who have been together for many years; they have chemistry. Their coach knows exactly how to handle them. As I said, I expect a tough matchup, like every EuroLeague game. We need to approach this game and get ready of hustle type of Zalgiris playing, I mean they play with a lot of energy. In this forty-minutes game every possession will be important. They add some athleticism to their team and their plays fit excellent to their system. We played a friendly game [in preseason] and know they are a very strong team. They had a tight game with Crvena Zvezda but basically we don’t analyze specific games but generally the philosophy of the opponents."
JASIKEVICIUS, SARUNAS
Zalgiris Kaunas
"Khimki is one of the most talented teams in the EuroLeague. They are surely a strong Top 8 candidate and in my mind they can make it to the Final Four as well. They have gathered an amazing roster and will only get better in time. Obviously Alexey Shved is their main guy in the offense, so it will be a challenge to defend him. Of course, we can’t forget about other players, because they have a lot of talents. You can see coach Bartzokas' style in selecting the roster – all the players can switch positions as they have tall guards and mobile big guys."

Players

ANDERSON, JAMES
Khimki Moscow Region
"It will be a hard-fought and competitive game. Zalgiris is a team that always competes till the end trying to give their best. They added some pieces to the roster that will help them this year. I know Brandon Davies as we played together in Philly. I think they are going to be a sneaky team in the EuroLeague this year. As always, playing against the guys that I played with is something special. Competing against them and trying to get a win is always fun. We had a tough game last week at new arena but our fans were great, as well as the overall atmosphere. We just gonna continue to take care of home court."
JANKUNAS, PAULIUS
Zalgiris Kaunas
"Khimki is a very good team where every player is strong individually. Anybody can play one on one there. They also have Shved, who is always ready to take a shot and he usually makes it. They like to play fast as their guards are really top level. We will need to get back to defense faster than usual. We need to control the game and limit our turnovers."

These teams have only met four times in the EuroLeague over the years with Khimki. Zalgiris won their first ever duel, but Khimki has won the last three and is 2-0 versus Zalgiris at home.

James Anderson made his EuroLeague debut with Khimki back in the 2014-15 season. He helped the team win the Lithuanian League and Cup double. Paulius Jankunas, Arturas Milaknis and Edgaras Ulanovas are the only players on the current Zalgiris roster from Anderson’s tenure with the club.

Paulius Jankunas has played his entire senior career with Zalgiris spare the 2009-10 campaign, which he spent with Khimki.

Khimki big man Marko Todorovic was a teammate of Zalgiris head coach Sarunas Jasikevicius at FC Barcelona in the 2012-13 season. They helped Barcelona reach the EuroLeague Final Four.

Khimki guard Stefan Markovic and Zalgiris forward Aaron White were teammates last season at Zenit St. Petersburg.

Markovic and his Zalgirs counterpart Vasilije Micic have played together on the Serbian national team.

Khimki set club records for scoring (111 points), free throws made (27) and performance index rating (150) in EuroLeague play against Zalgiris on January 29, 2016.
