THE TAKE

Unics Kazan hosts Besiktas ColaTurka to start the action in Group D. Unics brings back almost the entire roster that raised the Russian Cup last season and has its sights set on going deep in the Eurocup. Besiktas, however, does have the advantage of the added confidence “the Black Eagles gained by eliminating WBC Raiffeisen Wels in the Eurocup Qualification Round. Guard Mire Chatman’s 34 points were key to overcoming a 5-point deficit in the second leg of the series and Besiktas will surely look to get him involved early and often in Tuesday’s contest. Chatman and his backcourt companions, Muratcan Guler and Engin Atsur, are charged with the tough task of putting the clamps on Unics’s deadly backcourt. Marko Popovic, one of the most explosive scorers in Europe for years running, combined with Terrell Lyday for 25 points a contest in Unics’s 2008-09 Eurocup campaign. Former Euroleague champ Saulius Stombergas returns from retirement to anchor the forward spot for Unics with a bottomless well of winning knowledge. Big man Vladimir Veremeenko provides offensive punch and second-year players Artem Kuzyakin and Igor Zamanskiy round out a deep rotation at forward. Facing them will shooter Brad Newley and power forwards Cevher Ozer, who had a breakout season last year. Unics’s Kresimir Loncar and Besiktas’s Lonny Baxter will go head-to-head at the center spot. It should prove to be a most interesting duel between Loncar’s finesse and Baxter’s power. Baxter can count on proven backup Kevin Fletcher to come off the bench to keep the pressure on Unics in the blocks. All signs point to a tough 40 minutes between two teams that have already come together and are looking to shine in the Eurocup.

"The game against Besiktas is at a hand, though we didn't take some special preparations towards it. We have got a very tight schedule of games, and therefore we have to concentrate on each game at a time. After the Russian League game against BC Triumph we will have three days to devote to preparations for the game against Besiktas, to analyze our opponents' game and their tactics. This season our club takes part in a number of tournaments. All of them are equally important to us and we will try to do our best to show maximum results in each of the tournaments we take part."

"We're looking forward to the start of Eurocup. As a matter of fact, we have been watching closely our opponents and their results, and the way they played against the strongest teams of Turkey, and we realize that Besiktas is in good shape. We believe that Besiktas presents itself as a well-built team, having many American players in their line-up. However, we will try our best to show a spectacular game and to please our fans with the victory."
Marko Popovic - Unics KazanUnics Kazan started off the 2009-10 Eurocup regular season as a record-setter by blasting Besiktas ColaTurka out of the building 101-76 with historic long-range shooting to grab a piece of first place in Group D. After Besiktas pulled to within 34-31 midway through the second quarter, Unics broke the game open on a 15-2 run composed entirely of three-pointers to close out the half with a 16-point lead that it only continued to extend in the third quarter behind Popovic's smoking hand as the entire team caught fire.

Baxter got the scoring going for Besiktas with a basket inside, while Igor Zamanskiy quickly answered for the hosts by draining a triple. Cevher Ozer and Vladimir Veremeenko traded field goals in a hot-shooting opening sequence befor Popovic appeared with 4 straight points on a free throw and triple to put Unics ahead 9-4. Out of a Unics timeout, Saulius Stombergas hit two threes and Popovic added a third to claim a 12-point lead for Unics. Guler tried to stop the bleeding with 2 foul shots, but Zvarykin and Veremeenko dropped two more bombs from behind the arc to give Unics a 49-33 lead at the break.

The third quarter got under way with a free throw by Baxter. Petr Samoylenko scored for Unics, and Guler answered for the visitors. Popovic picked up where he left off with his sixth three-pointer, and Loncar added a dunk-plus-foul shot to push the lead out to 57-36. Baxter, once again, stepped up with a dunk, but Zamanskiy bookended a score by Kerem Ozkan with 2 layups. Unics went up by 26 on yet another three by Popovic and a dunk by Veremeenko. Besiktas called for time but could not stop Popovic who connected again from long distance. Stombergas hit a triple to break to 30-point barrier, 72-40. Guler responded with one of his own only to see Stombergas drain another three the next time down. After a brief 2-6 spurt from Besiktas, Stombergas scored for the fifth time from behind the arc as Unics went into the final period up 80-52. Ozer hit a three and Baxter added a dunk to begin the fourth quarter. Samoylenko and Loncar answered with two scores, but Chatman scored from behind the arc, 84-60. After a dry spell for both teams, Ozer dunked and Loncar made a layup. Zvarykin made his teams record setting 19th three-pointer at 89-62. Besiktas rolled off an 0-8 run capped with 4 points by Chatman till Popovic hit back-to-back layups. A layup and foul shot by Loncar and a dunk by Igor Tkatchenko gave the final score of 101-76.

Head Coaches

CHOMICIUS, VALDEMARAS
Unics
"I will not speak much to comment on this game. We have won, and I'm pretty satisfied with it. Although Besiktas lost, I would like to say that I like their manner and the style they are playing."
BIYIKTAY, BURAK
Besiktas ColaTurka
"First, I’d like to congratulate my opponents on their victory. As a matter of fact, the hosts were the favorites this evening, since they have such a good roster, while we lacked two injured players in our line-up. Marco Popovic was almost perfect with his many three-points shots. In the first quarter we tried to keep up, while in the second we didn't manage to have the defense we wanted to have and thus we let Unics acquire a good advantage, which helped them win the whole game. The final margin was a very big surprise for us."
