THE TAKE

A showdown of undefeated 2-0 teams, host Asefa Estudiantes and Benetton Bwin, comes to Madrid's Palacio Vistalegre on Tuesday to determine which of them will remain atop Group F by the end of Week 3. Estudiantes hopes that its home-court advantage will help it prevail against the talent and strong defense of Benetton. Estudiantes beat Chorale Roanne on the road in Week 2 thanks to 21 points by power player Nik Caner-Medley, who came through in the clutch with a key triple, and 18 by small forward Pancho Jasen. They will face a tough test from Stefan Markovic, Benetton’s talented floor general, who will look to establish young center Donatas Motiejunas early and spread the defense by setting up shooter Ryan Toolson on the perimeter. Veteran Massimo Bulleri and teenager Alessandro Gentile can also hit the long ball, while Devin Smith’s all-around game and Sandro Nicevic's experience are more assets that Benetton head coach Jasmin Repesa can fall back on. The visitors main weapon so far, however, is defense, as they allowed no more than 62 points in their first two victories. Their 17-point averages make Caner-Medley and Jasen one of the Eurocup's highest-scoring tandems and great targets for playmaker Jayson Granger, who ranks third in the competition with 6.5 steals per game. Josh Asselin and German Gabriel provide Estudiantes with frontcourt size and depth, while talented young big man Daniel Clark can also help his team in different ways. On the perimeter, Tyrone Ellis hit 5 three-pointers last week, so he's a streak shooter Benetton must keep tabs on, while Jiri Welsch brings experience and defense to Estudiantes. With first place in Group F goint to the winner, this game has all the makings of an early-season classic.

REPESA, JASMIN
Benetton Bwin
"We must keep the rhythm of the last two weeks. We have two crucial games ahead of us, in Madrid and Bologna. Estudiantes is a dangerous team, we cannot underestimate anyone. I am convinced that we will have a higher-level duel than the one last weekend in the Italian League. In Europe no one is allowed to take false steps and every game is fundamental to get to the next round. I am curious to see how we will play this one. I think these next couple of games will help me grasp our true potential."

Players

Devin Smith - Benetton Basket BwinA battle for exclusive hold on first place in Group F was all about the visitors on Tuesday, as Benetton Bwin turned back Asefa Estudiantes 71-80 on the road in Madrid to break what was a tie of undefeated teams entering the game. Benetton improved to 3-1 and is in striking distance of a Last 16 qualification, while Estudiantes fell to 2-1 prior to the same two teams meeting next week in Treviso, Italy. Better shooting and a huge 38-18 rebounding edge was the difference for Benetton, which got 5 three-pointers and 22 points from Devin Smith. Alessandro Gentile followed with 10 points, while Donatas Motiejunas and Greg Brunner had 9 each, the latter doubling up with 10 of those rebounds. Estudiantes saw Tyrone Ellis score 11 of his 12 points in the first quarter, including 3 three-pointers, but his team hit just 1 more shot from downtown after that. German Gabriel came off the bench to lead the hosts with 14 points while Nik Caner-Medley had 10, but not even a 17-point edge in free throws could save Estudiantes from its huge rebounding disadvantage.

A three-point shootout broke open on the game's first basket, from Ellis, who was quickly matched by Devin Smith, whose subsequent two-pointer forged a quick 7-7 tie. Ellis broke that with his next triple, and when Hrvoje Peric tied it up at 11-11 for Benetton, buried his third in 6 minutes to answer. Smith was just as ready, however, and on a fourth-chance possession, hit his own triple to spark an 0-8 burst that Massimo Bulleri ended from the arc with Benetton up 14-19. Ellis teed up again, but got "just" 2 free throws out of it, while Bulleri got his long-range shot off - and landed it, of course - as Benetton won a wild first quarter, 18-26. Jakub Wojciechowski's 3 baskets to open the second quarter meant a double-digit lead, 22-32, for Benetton. Gabriel and Daniel Clark revived Estudiantes with 7 points between them, cutting the difference to 29-34. Brunner's dunk and a three-point play by Smith let Benetton get away to 31-40, but Gabriel and Sergio Sanchez, with a triple, narrowed the gap again before Clark and Jayson Granger pulled Estudiantes to within 39-42 at halftime.

Jiri Welsch's jumper and a Josh Asselin's three-point play off a dunk catapulted Estudiantes to a 44-43 advantage soon after halftime. Sandro Nicevic, Smith and Donatas Motiejunas answered for Benetton with the next 9 points, however, to take control again. By the time Peric rejoined the scoring, Benetton had withstood the hosts' surge on its way to a 52-60 lead after 30 minutes. Gentile from downtown and Peric inside kept the Benetton run going to the game's biggest lead, 52-65, early in the final quarter. Welsch, Sanchez and Caner-Medley reacted, getting Estudiantes closer at 59-67. By the time Caner-Medley made back-to-back baskets on either side of the five-minute mark, Estudiantes was in striking distance of the lead at 65-69. That's when Smith reappeared with a triple, followed by Gentile hitting a layup and a dunk to make it a safe 67-76 advantage for the visitors, who were well on their way to the top of Group F by then.

Head Coaches

PALOMO, LUIS CASIMIRO
Asefa Estudiantes
"It is easy to recap this game - we have been doing things well and you have to give my team credit for competing all game long despite being heavily outrebounded tonight. It was one of the keys to win the game, because Benetton is a great team when it comes to offensive rebounds. Our team effort was very good at many times but they have way more possessions and chances to score than us. Even with that, if we hadn't make three punctual mistakes in crunch time, we would have been able to compete for the win despite the difference under the boards."
REPESA, JASMIN
Benetton Bwin
"We played a great game, which is important because now we have a big advantage over rivals with two games at home. It would be a crime to waste it after this point. We did well on attack, with good movement and many extra passes. We controlled the boards, 38 to 18, and on defense, even with some mistakes, we were solid. It's a victory and victories are good. We are young and we know it, and this can be risky, but today the young guys did very well. Donatas and Gentile in the second half did great things. Wojciechowski did very well at the beginning. The victories are the best way to improve and play with confidence. Now, we see our potential, but both our young players and veterans should keep their feet on the ground after a win and not get depressed after a loss. This season, the mental strength of the team will be very important."
GENTILE, ALESSANDRO
Benetton Bwin
"More important than my contribution is the way we played as a team. We played and had fun, even on defense, and that is important for us. We have won five games in a row including the Eurocup and Italian League, so we must continue. Of course, with victories it is easier to work and look ahead to the next games."
