THE TAKE

A direct battle to advance to the Eurocup Quarterfinals in Group J is set to take place in Valencia, Spain, where Power Electronics welcomes Unics on Tuesday at 20:30 CET. Valencia will be first and advance if it wins or loses by 3 points, regardless of other scores. It will not reach the Quarterfinals, however, if it loses by more than 5 points and Hapoel Jerusalem beats already eliminated Galatasaray Cafe Crown. Unics needs to win to stay alive in the competition if Hapoel loses. It will need at least a six-point win to reach the Quarterfinals if Hapoel downs Galatasaray. As such, it comes as no surprise to say that every single point will count in this battle to make it to the next round. It will be a very special game for Unics superstar Marko Popovic, that returns to Valencia to play his former team. Popovic will see most minutes at off-guard to make the most out his one-on-one and shooting skills, with Terrell Lyday and Petr Samoylenko sharing the point guard duties. Popovic faces a critical matchup against Valencia shooting guard Rafa Martinez. Lyday will have to use his athleticism and experience against Nando de Colo, while Samoylenko must play very aggressive against Marko Marinovic. Power VLC is deeper at both wings, as only Popovic, three-point threat Igor Zamanskiy and veteran shooter Saulius Stombergas see quality playing time at shooting guard or small forward. Stombergas will hahave to use his defense and experience against Valencia's franchise player Victor Claver. Valencia relies on streak shooter Thomas Kelati to make the difference against Popovic and Zamanskiy. Both teams have very deep, versatile frontcourts and the battle in the paint will arguably be the key to this exciting game. Unics can open the floor with power forward Vladimir Veremeenko due to his soft touch, versatility and know-how. It can get an advantage in the low post with Kresimir Loncar or use Maciej Lampe to get a little bit of everything - deep range, post skills and rebounds at both ends. Lampe and Loncar have a critical matchup against Kosta Perovic and Serhiy Lishchul. Perovic provides post skills and instant offense while Lishchuk is a rock-solid defender with size, athleticism and winning mentality. Veremeenko will test his all-around game against Matt Nielsen, a hard-nosed defender with talent, size and ballhandling. Florent Pietrus offers defense, fighting attitude and intensity off the bench. Unics must play up-tempo, get its big men involved and expect a good game from Popovic. Valencia has to run its offense through Nielsen and Lishchuk and expect Claver to make the difference at small forward. Expect nothing but action, drama, intensity and good basketball in Valencia on Tuesday.

Power Electronics
"We know and we have said it: this is a very important game. Someone has even said that it is the game of the year. We will prepare this game really focused because we know that, after this game, nothing will be the same for us in the season. We won't be looking at the Istanbul score, the important thing for us is our game and win together with our fans."

Popovic fed Kresimir Loncar for a reverse layup that got Unics going and Saulius Stombergas soon added a baseline jumper for a 0-4 lead. Martinez followed a mid-range jumper with a backdoor layup but Lyday struck from downtown to put Unics back ahead, 4-7. Perovic scored in the low post and added free throws in a 6-0 Valencia run that Serhiy Lishchuk capped with a fast break dunk. Kuzyakin shined with a layup-plus-foul and Loncar added an up-and-under move but an unbelievable buzzer-beating running triple by Claver gave Valencia a 24-19 edge after 10 minutes. Lishchuk followed a driving basket with a triple to boost Valencia's led to double digits, 29-19, early in the second quarter. Veremeenko answered with a long jumper that Kelati matched with foul shots. Lampe hit a jump hook and Veremeenko struck from downtown to bring Unics back to life, 31-26. Nielsen banked in a turnaround jumper and Kelati added an uncontested layup to keep Valencia out of trouble, 35-26. Lishchuk dunked it again and soon added a layup in transition to make it a 14-point game, 40-26. Unics called a much-needed timeout and Lyday sank foul shots but Jose Simeon and Kelati buried back-to-back triples. Lyday kept trying to change things with a jumper that Popovic followed with foul shots to get Unics within 46-34 at halftime.

Loncar took over with a big basket in the low post immediately after the break and soon added a three-pointer to get Unics within single digits, 48-39. Nielsen stepped up with a layup in transition and fed Perovic for a dunk that gave Valencia a 52-39 lead. Kuzyakin nailed a triple and added free throws in a 0-8 run that Lampe capped with his own shot from downtown, making Valencia call timeout at 52-47. Kuzyakin scored again and a layup-plus-foul by Lampe made it a one-point game, 53-52. Nielsen took over with a three-point play and De Colo downed a big triple to give Valencia some fresh air at 60-54. Kelati joined the three-point shootout to force Unics to call timeout at 63-54. Lishchuk followed a put-back layup with a backdoor drunk to break the game open at 67-55. Valencia kept excelling in defense and three-pointers by De Colo and Martinez boosted the hosts' lead to 73-55 after 30 minutes. Lishchuk sank free throws early in the fourth quarter to cap a mamooth 22-3 run. Popovic tried to ignite the guests' comeback with free throws and Lyday added a mid-range jumper for a 15-point Unics deficit, 75-60. Claver and Lampe traded layups but Kelati did better with a triple that sealed the outcome, 80-62. Unics kept trying but everything was said and done already. All Power Electronics fans were celebrating that their team will keep fighting for Eurocup glory. Meanwhile, Unics fell short in the very last game, losing all chances to reach the Quarterfinals.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Power Electronics
“We have to congratulate our players for this big effort. Our team is tired and has little injuries and now we are going to rest a little bit. We had to win five games to go on and that is difficult, but I feel happy. We have to enjoy this moment and then keep working."
CHOMICIUS, VALDEMARAS
Unics
“We can’t beat a big team with so many turnovers. We controlled the rebounds, but we could not win. We have to play faster. We’re unhappy, but they were better."

Players

CLAVER, VICTOR

“We are very proud of ourselves and all our fans. It was a tough game, but we knew to survive. Now we have to play against Aris, and we will fight to get into the final four in Vitoria"
