THE TAKE

A big Group C showdown is set in Thessaloniki, Greece when Aris TT Bank hosts Benetton Treviso with the chance for the guests to make it to the Top 16. In fact, Benetton (6-5) will advance to the next round if it wins and both Napoli and Fenerbahce lose. On the other hand, Aris (5-6) can take a crucial step forwards with a victory, but it cannot qualify for the Top 16 this week. Even if it wins while both Fenerbahce and Napoli lose, the Italian side still can tie for the fifth place, including a win against Aris next week to get the tie-break advantage. With Terrell Castle (9.3 ppg., 2.6 apg.) sidelined due to appendicitis surgery, Aris has been running its offense through big men Mike Wilkinson (13.2 ppg., 6 rpg.) and Jeremiah Massey (12.8 ppg., 8.7 rpg.), as well as backcourt ace Alex Scales (15.5 ppg.). Castle is back this week Benetton will have a big part of the job done if it manages to stop Wilkinson and Massey, even when it is currently battling injuries. Marcus Goree (14.6 ppg., 7.3 rpg.) has sat out in the last two Euroleague games. He will travel but is not sure to play. Richie Frahm has been out since October and will not return for at least 20 days. If Goree stays sidelined, Spencer Nelson (10.7 ppg., 7.1 rpg.) will have to battle against Massey while Joey Beard (3.1 rpg.) and Angelo Gigli (7.3 ppg.) go against Wilkinson and Giannis Giannoulis (3.8 rpg.). Meanwhile, Nikos Zisis (12.3 ppg., 5.1 apg.) returns home to Greece to lead Benetton at the playmaker spot. If Castle does not recover in time, slasher Spyros Panteliadis and veteran Giorgos Kalaitzis will share the point guard duties against Zisis and Marco Mordente (11.3 ppg., 60.6% 3FG). Aris has its own specialists in defensive ace Giorgos Sigalas (2.5 rpg.) and dangerous scorer Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (5.9 ppg.), who will be ready to help Scales on offense. Swingman Bryant Smith (3.6 ppg.) will likely go against Scales on defense, while Terrell Lyday (7.9 ppg., 2 spg.) will try to help Zisis and Mordente at both guard spots. Benetton swingman Matteo Soragna (8.5 ppg.), who led all scorers with 19 points in the 64-42 home win against Aris last November, is ready to shine again, probably matched up against Simonas Serapinas (2.9 ppg.). It comes as no surprise that Aris will be backed by a wild sellout crowd that will create a strong basketball atmosphere, so expect a nothing but a thriller in Thessaloniki this week.

Quotes Head Coaches

MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"Undoubtedly, every game against Benetton Treviso looks very tough. Their players know how to compete in crucial and difficult games without losing their balance. However, I am really confident in our potential, especially in Alexandreio, which will be full of our supportive fans again. Every game is important at the end of the regular season and my players are prepared to parlay every chance to pass over Benetton Treviso. In my opinion, we should slow down the tempo of the game and avoid committing turnovers in order to make it to the final buzzer. Fortunately, Terrel Castle will be back after his surgery, even though he is not 100-percent fit."
BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"I think it's going to be a tough game. We will play in a crowded arena and this is a factor for the home team, even if it's always exciting to play in such a place with such enthusiasm from the supporters. But we have to find the right motivations from it. Things have changed from the first game with them in Treviso. First, they are a different team when they play at home, and now they can count on the full roster, maybe even more than 12 players who can give an help. But we are looking forward to this game will try to get the win in the run to the Top 16."

Players

CASTLE, TERREL
Aris TT Bank
"I am back! After the surgery, I worked a lot to be ready for this game against Benetton. I can run and shoot without problems. Besides, I would like to play in this game at any cost. It was hard to watch my teammates from the bench without being able to help them in difficult moments. No team can resist in Alexandreio. We should be fire-eating during the game and show them our potential. I don't care about the deficit because Aris needs just a squeaker to qualify for the Top 16. What is important is to focus on the game and fight for every ball, both defensively and offensively."
ZISIS, NIKOS
Benetton Basket
"I expect a hot arena, but this could be our best chance to show attitude and intensity in that atmosphere. They need a win so they have to put pressure on us. We have to exploit that aspect and lay with patience and concentration, especially on the boards, where Aris has some good offensive rebounders like Massey, Wilkinson and Giannoulis. We must have the right concentration since we need another win to step up to the Top 16."
Terrel Castle - Aris TT Bank Aris moved closer to a Top 16 berth in its first Euroleague season by surviving a battle to the finish, 65-60 over Benetton in Group C at soldout Alexandrio Melathron Arena in Thesaloniki, Greece on Thursday. Aris and Benetton each have 6-5 records now to share third place in Group C with Pau-Orthez. Terrell Castle returned from injury to post 22 points and pull 8 rebounds for the winners. Alex Scales added 17 points, including key ones in the final minutes. Savvas Iliadis came off the bench for 10 points while Mike Wilkinson recorded 11 rebounds to go with 5 steals and 5 points. For Benetton, Angelo Gigli scored 14 points mostly on dunks, while Marco Mordente added 12 and Terrell Lyday 10. Thessaloniki native and Benetton guard Nikos Zisis was given a warm applause before tipoff and scored 10 points, all in the first half. Benetton had control for three quarters, but suffered a crucial scoring black-out in the final period posting just one point in 8 minutes as Aris took advantage to regain the lead and hold it through the final buzzer.

Each team missed its first couple of opportunities before Castle and Zisis openned the scoring with jumpers at 2-2. Soon, Castle nailed a triple from the corner, but then Lyday exploded for 5 consecutive points to put the guests ahead at 5-7. When Benetton head coach David Blatt ordered zone defense, Aris was ready to feed the ball inside to Wilkinson, who connected for a 7-7 tie. Zisis drove to score and then popped a long jumper to make it 7-11 for the guests, as he and Lyday shared all of Benetton's points so far. Aris wasn't much different; when Castle nailed another shot from behind the arc and then connected from the foul line, Aris had a 12-11 lead and he had all but 2 of the points for the hosts. Benetton was now finding its way to the free throw line and soon Aris did so, too, until Savvas Iliadis came off the bench to chip in a fadeaway jumper and seconds hit the buzzer-beater that shot the hosts ahead 20-15 at the end of the first quarter.

Marco Mordente - Benetton TrevisoLyday nailed Benetton's first three-pointer in five tries to open the second quarter. Giannis Giannoulis connected inside for Aris, but soon the scoring slowed. Benetton used offensive rebounds - five so far- to get close and the tie it up, 22-22. Aris was nursing just one basket through 5 minutes of the second quarter before Massey connected with a nice reverse layup. Joey Beard grabbed another offensive board to give Benetton the lead at 24-25, so when Marco Mordente nailed a jumper and Angelo Gigli dunked, the guests were up 24-29. Lyday, from the line, boosted Benetton's run to 8-0 before Scales stepped up to change the momentum by connecting twice in the row from behind the arc for Aris, tying it up again at 30-30. Wilkinson blocked Gigli, who reacted with a monster dunk on the next possession, and Zisis nailed the last shot of the half to let the guests go to the lockers ahead by 30-34.

Mordente and Castle exchanged triples to start the third quarter. Marcus Goree found a difficult jumper to make it 34-39 as Benetton seemed to have control of the game tempo. Gigli kept on dunking with force as Aris went more than 2 minutes without scoring. Finally, Castle popped from the line at 41-35 and Giorgos Sigalas helped the Airs defense force Benetton iinto mistakes. Still, the guests again found offensive boards, with Spencer Nelson now making it 35-43. The hosts did not give up, though. Castle fired in his fourth triple and then dished the ball to Massey for an impressive dunk-plus-free throw that cut the difference to 41-43. Mordente reacted with an easy layup in the paint for Benetton, but Scales fired in another three-pointer to make it 44-45. Gigli found room for his fourth dunk in the game and later on added a hook as Benetton managed to hold onto a 46-49 edge after 30 minutes.

Iliadis took a good back-door pass from Sigalas to get Aris started right in the final quarter. Indeed, when Iliadis added another layup, the hosts regained the lead at 50-49 and forced a Benetton time out. Both teams fought for every single possession as things got tougher and tougher on court. Lyday tied it 50-50 with a free throw, but seconds later had to go to the bench after fouling out with his fifth personal. Iliadis stole the ball twice now, while Castle poured in yet another triple to make it 53-50. Scales drove for a basket and made the free throw that came with it, making the Aris fans go crazy in the stands as the lead reached 56-50 with less than 3 minutes still to play. The hosts kept on pressuring the perimeter as Benetton struggled to create opportunities. Finally, Gigli dunked to record Benetton's first basket after 8 minutes in the final quarter, however, Scales again took charge with a steal and a fastbreak layup to make it 59-52. When Castle was accurate twice from, from the line, Benetton had no time left to turn things around.

Head Coaches

MAZZON, ANDREA
Aris TT Bank
"I would like to dedicate this win to our fans that always support us in an incredible way and pack Alexandreio every week. We knew that the last five minutes would be the crucial part of the game and that’s why we put all our energy in the court at the end. Today, we were not concentrated in the pick and roll defense. We tried to face it with a double team but Benetton created many open shots from the weak side. Fortunately, we improved ourselves in the second part of the game and celebrated the most important win until the next one. To be honest, we have to work a lot more to mend our offensive game but I am very proud for my players because they won this game against a defensive-oriented team like Benetton. Now, what is necessary is to focus on the next game in Kaunas. Aris is very close to qualify for the Top 16 and we should win at least one of the two remaining games to make our dream come true."
BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"It was a pitched battle! Both teams tried a lot in the court but Aris was very strong and decisive in the final quarter. The story of the game is simple. We were almost perfect for three quarters but Aris netted the big shots at the end and made it. On the contrary, we couldn’t find the way to the basket and only Greek archers could help us to score early in the last part of the game. The hosts took advantage of our turnovers and gained this win. I have to admit that Aris plays better among its fans, which push their team for every minute towards the victory. The team owes them a lot! I still believe that we ourselves have the chance to determine our destiny in the next two games to qualify for the next level."

Players

PANTELIADIS, SPYRIDON
Aris TT Bank
"Benetton is a very solid and creative team. The game was really tough with low quality. Despite our passable first half, we managed to set up our defense and win this game. In such games, you should keep only the win and work a lot to improve your performance. Our next goal is to win back to back games in the end of the regular season and hit a higher spot as possible."
ZISIS, NIKOS
Benetton Basket
"It was a very tough game as everyone expected. Despite our great performance during the first three quarters, Aris deserved this win at the end. The hosts forced us to commit crucial turnovers in the final quarter. I myself took wrong decisions because of Panteliadis's pressure and gave the chance to Castle to score the big shots. It's very difficult to stand up and resist in Alexandreio. I felt nervous before the game, but the yellow fans welcomed me like they did with Papaloukas. I feel that they didn't watch a premium game but every meeting here is a promotion for the Euroleague and basketball."
