THE TAKE

Fenerbahce Ulker hosts Cibona Zagreb on Wednesday in a crucial Group H match at Istanbul’s Abdi Ipekci Arena. The two teams enter the contest tied for third at 1-2, but with the two teams they trail – CSKA Moscow and Montepaschi Siena – also set for duty Wednesday, the winner is assured of a tie for second place. However the loser will drop to 1-3 and face an uphill battle to remain in contention for the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Fener picked up its first win of the Top 16 two weeks ago by besting Cibona 55-65 in the Croatian capital as Mirsad Turkcan stood tall with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The Turkish champs will now look to double their Top 16 win total. Head coach Bogdan Tanjevic’s team has gotten deeper as the season progressed with several players coming back after long injuries and he now has an 11-man rotation to choose from. Turkcan is the team’s most experienced player and he leads a frontcourt that also features Semih Erden, Gasper Vidmar and Oguz Savas inside, plus forward Emir Preldzic. They’ll take on Cibona’s foursome of Niksa Prkacin, Bruno Sundov, Jared Homan and Luksa Andric. Fener’s star swingman Gordan Giricek, a former Cibona star, has become a big scoring threat for Tanjevic, adding punch to the perimeter attack alongside shooter Damir Kaan Mrsic, defensive ace Omer Onan and the athletic Devin Smith. The diminutive Marques Green handles playmaking duties for Fener. Cibona starts Davor Kus and Earl Calloway at guard and Allan Anderson at small forward. Vedran Vukusic and Marin Rozic offer head coach Velimir Perasovic options off the bench. Despite the loss, Cibona will come to Turkey in good spirits after lifting the Croatian Cup over the weekend thanks to a strong effort from Anderson. Fenerbahce, meanwhile, is smarting from losing in the Turkish Cup semifinals to rival Efes Pilsen. Moreover, Onan, Preldzic and Smith all missed practice time due to injuries or illness, though all three are expected to play on Wednesday. The stakes will be high in this game, with no turning back for the loser. Look for the veterans– Kus and Prkacin for Cibona and Turkcan, Onan and Mrsic for Fener – to play the biggest roles in the second half when the game and the season could be on the line and the young stars on both teams may not have what it takes to produce with the season hanging in the balance.

GAME NOTES

Fenerbahce Ulker
  • Playmaker Marques Green has recorded a steal in all 13 games in which he has appeared this season. He was tied for fifth in the regular season with 2.1 steals per game.
  • Swingman Gordan Giricek has scored in double figures in 16 consecutive Euroleague games, dating back to December 2001 when he was with CSKA. Giricek has scored at least 20 in 12 of those games.
  • Giricek’s professional career took off during five season he spent at Cibona from 1996 through 2001. During that period, he won five Croatian League championships and one Croatian Cup. Among the current Cibona players that Giricek played with at Cibona are Niksa Prkacin, Davor Kus and Branimir Longin.
  • Rebounding king Mirsad Turkcan produced his 46th career Euroleague double-double last week, more than any other player. All of them have been point-rebound double doubles.
  • Guard Omer Onan is just 2 steals shy of reaching 100 for Euroleague Basketball career.
Cibona
  • Cibona has lost five straight road games and is 2-18 away from home over the past three Euroleague seasons.
  • Swingman Alan Anderson has scored in double figures and grabbed a steal in seven straight Euroleague games going back to last season.

Quotes Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"This will be a difficult game for us. Our morale dropped after the Turkish Cup when we failed to make it to the final by losing to Efes Pilsen. We have to forget that and prepare for this game with full motivation. We already had two practices since that game against Efes. We have great respect for Cibona Zagreb and I believe that they can play better than they did in Zagreb. I don't like to think about winning the game before it starts, because Europe is small and the exit is just beyond the game. The only thing I can say is that we will keep fighting to win every game we play as well as against Cibona."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"We are going to Istanbul to win, to keep our quarterfinal hopes alive as long as possible. We have the Croatian Cup behind us and I think we showed that we can still play pretty good defense, so, with some improvements with our offensive game we can still be someone to count on. The schedule is dense, and we did not have time to celebrate the Cup, but all of the other clubs have the same situation, so there is no point in talking about that. Fener is a really strong team which had some problems at the beginning of Top 16 but now they have the same goal as us – to remain alive in the competition as long as possible."

Players

CETIN, SERHAT
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We have to take another step forward to strengthen our chances of qualifying to the Quarterfinal Playoffs. We played really great in Zagreb, but that game is already over. Cibona Zagreb will want to win more than they desired in Zagreb for sure. They have a very good and experienced roster and we have to be very carefully. At the same time, we need to see our fans behind us. And we also need to play better than we did in the game in Zagreb."
PRKACIN, NIKOLA
Cibona
"Although we have already succeeded in reaching our goal in the Euroleague, which was entering Top 16, we are not going to Istanbul to surrender. We have played some great games during the season and I think we can stay in the game by winning against Fenerbahce Ulker."
Davor Kus - CibonaCibona Zagreb re-opened a pathway to the playoffs on Wednesday by smashing hosts Fenerbahce Ulker 64-86 on the road in Istanbul to more than avenge its loss in the first game between the two teams in Croatia. Cibona improved its Group H record to 2-2, tying Montepaschi Siena for second place. Cibona can secure a playoff berth should it defeat Montepaschi in Siena next Thursday. Fenerbahce fell to 1-3 and is all but mathematically out of the playoff race: even victories in both remaining Top 16 games against CSKA and Montepaschi do not guarantee its survival. Fresh off its Croatian Cup victory on the weekend, Cibona was sharper all game, taking big leads early and defending them whenever Fenerbahce tried to rally. Backcourt scorers Davor Kus and Alan Anderson dominated for Cibona with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Big man Jared Homan was an almost perfect 8-for-10 from the field on his way to 16 points, while fellow big man Nikola Prkacin muscled in 10 points. For Fenerbahce, Oguz Savas was the top scorer with 13 points and Mirsad Turkcan notched 12 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Fenerbahce never got focused, shooting a disastrous 2-for-14 on three-pointers and 3-for-12 on free throws in the 27-49 first half, after which Cibona kept control until the final buzzer.

Mirsad Turkcan - Fenerbahce UlkerKus shot a jumper off the dribble to open the scoring and Rozic made it 0-4 with free throws before Savas dribbled through Cibona's full-court press to slam for Fenerbahce. That unglued the hosts' offense, and they proceeded to score layups on three consecutive possessions, two of them made by Gasper Vidmar, for their first lead, 8-6. Cibona answered with more free throws from Rozic and the game's first three-pointer, by Anderson at 8-11. Turkcan, the hero of Fenerbahce's Week 3 win in Zagreb, stepped on court for the first time at 10-13 but couldn't prevent Cibona from reeling off 7 unanswered points on Anderson's free throws, a Kus triple and Vedran Vukusic's first basket. At 10-20, Turkcan came through with his first make, but Fenerbahce couldn't buy a single free throw, missing all 6 of its first-quarter attempts from the line. Cibona punished that fault with a new 0-8 run capped by layup from Homan that, all of a sudden, let the visitors double Fenerbahce on the scoreboard, 14-28, after 10 minutes.

Turkcan opened the second quarter by showing his teammates how to shoot free throws, but Fenerbahce also left Kus open for a corner triple. Next, Early Calloway flew past Fenerbahce's defense for an acrobatic layup as Cibona took full control at 18-35. Emir Preldzic finally made a three-pointer for the hosts - their first after six misses - but Rozic answered with a smooth shot from way behind the arc and Anderson fed Prkacin for a dunk that made it 23-40. Fenerbahce kept releasing it from downtown and kept missing, giving Cibona fastbreak opportunities after the long rebounds as when Prkacin threw full-court to Rozic for a layup. Anderson kept Cibona rolling with a tough three-pointer over Marques Greene, and when Homan matched Fenerbahce's 4 points down the stretch, the visitors held a shocking 27-49 halftime lead.

Alan Anderson - CibonaOmer Oman opened the second half with a fastbreak layup for Fenerbahce, but Kus erased it with another jumper. Though the hosts were much more aggressive on defense now, Cibona stayed cool. Kus found Homan open underneath and soon was fouled as his own tough left-handed shot fell. He it the additional free throw to make it 29-56. Preldzic stepped up then for Fenerbahce, igniting an 8-0 run with 5 points and an assist to Gordan Giricek, whose triple cut the difference to 39-58. Cibona did what it often does on crucial possessions, getting the ball inside to Prkacin for a lefty hook. After Calloway followed with a triple, Prkacin another hook and Anderson a two-handed jam off a steal, Cibona was up 42-67 with 10 minutes to go.

Prkacin kept torturing Fenerbahce with his left hook at the start of the final quarter. Turkcan drilled a triple, Savas added a long two-pointer and Giricek a fastbreak layup to trim the lead to 50-69. Some of the home fans kept singing, even after Anderson drove for another layup, but they did so despite seeing where the game was headed. Though a three-pointer by Greene cut it to 54-71, Fenerbahce's closest distance in awhile, Homan made another layup look easy and Kus hit a two-pointer at 56-75. With only 4 minutes left on the clock, the spectators started to leave the Abdi Ipekci Sports Hall as Cibona calmly cruised to its biggest Euroleague win of the season.

Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"If you let your opponent to score 84 points on your own court, it's really hard to win, especially in the Euroleague. When we won the first game in Zagreb against Cibona, we kept them at 55 points. But at home, we played extremly bad both in offence and defence. Now we have to consider our performance on defence and our aggressiveness in a serious way. We have to make a suitable plan to overcome this problem. Before we consider our situation in the Euroleague at the moment, we have to pay attention to the Turkish League game against Besiktas Cola Turka at the weekend. Then we can make our plans against CSKA Moscow next."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"We never expected to win this game against Fenerbahce Ulker that easily. But honest to say, we played the best game of the season. We got what we planned both on offense and defense. We found easy shots and made those to extend our lead in the game. When we locked the game over the twenty-point barrier in the second half, we defended it well all through the rest of the game. We lost against Fenerbahce Ulker two weeks ago at home. But in that game, we played very bad on offense. We won the Croatian Cup at home to earn our self-confidence again, and that’s what also helped us tonight."

Players

SAVAS, OGUZ
Fenerbahce Ulker
"There's nothing much to say about this game. We played really badly and lost in an unexpected way. The worst part is that we weren’t even able to challenge. Now we have to think about the Besiktas Cola Turka game this weekend. We will try to win on the road to maintain our morale."
PRKACIN, NIKOLA
Cibona
"First of all, it's really nice to come and play here in Istanbul, where I spent many years with Efes Pilsen. It was a game which we never expected to win so easy. I think Fenerbahce Ulker was in a bad day that they couldn't perform well. We played the way we planned and under discipline for all 40 minutes. And we did things better in all levels. It’s good to go back to Zagreb with a kind of big win."
