THE TAKE

BK Venspils hosts Brose Baskets to start off the regular season action in Group H for both clubs. Ventspils is always tough to beat with its legions of loyal fans cheering their heroes on, but Bamberg comes in knowing it has what it takes to win complicated situations having pulled out a tough Qualifying Round series versus KK Buducnost by a single point. The Latvian champs have young players with great offensive skills who proved as much with an impressive showing before falling in the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds. Ventspils boasts plenty of talent in its backcourt led by rising stars Janis Strelnieks and Dairis Bertans. Recent addition Akeem Scott provides the experience that could be needed against the Brose Baskets guard quartet of Casey Jacobsen, Brian Roberts, Robert Garrett and Anton Gavel. The battle at small forward features two all-around skilled players, Bamberg’s seasoned Predrag Suput against Mareks Jurevicius. In the paint the visitors will turn to Eric Taylor at power forward and center Elton Brown, who was the key man for Bamberg in the first leg of its series against Buducnost was Elton Brown with 20 points. Tibor Pleiss gives Bamberg some important size off the bench. Ventspils has a deep frontline featuring Rolands Zakis and Aaron Pettway, plus the young Lauris Blaus and Ernests Kalve, a foursome that together can give head coach Agris Galvanovskis many different options. All signs point to an exciting Week 1 contest between two teams that are already battle tested and eager to prove themselves in the Eurocup.

Quotes Head Coaches

GALVANOVSKIS, AGRIS
BK Ventspils
"Our rival, Brose Baskets, is a very good and experienced team but we will fight to take this win. However, I understand that wins in the Eurocup do not come easy. We are well prepared and in good condition, and we are surely motivated to get this win!"
FLEMING, CHRIS
Brose Baskets
"They have a young player with very good wing players. They did really well in the Euroleague Qualifying Round, too. I think we have an advantage under the baskets. We need to make our best players get into the game quickly. At the same time, my team needs the right defensive attitude to in on the road, too."

Players

PETTWAY, AARON
BK Ventspils
"I am ready to play these Eurocup games. This will be my second game in this competition, as the first time I played with Strasbourg. In any case, I welcome the chance to be part of this great competition. Our team is performing well and we are ready to play and win. It's also good that our new point guard, Akeem Scott, has finally arrived, he should be of great help. I hope we can present Venstpils well to the entire continent and that the fans in Latvia will come to support us. I hope the house will be packed!"
Predarg Suput - Brose BasketsBrose Baskets Bamberg walked away from the home court of BK Ventspils with a valuable 62-85 victory to open the 2009-10 Eurocup regular season with a huge road win. Predrag Suput was the go-to guy all evening for Bamberg, leading the way with a game-high 18 points while hitting critical baskets anytime that Ventspils made an effort to challenge. Tibor Pleiss seconded Suput with 12, and Anton Gavel added 11. Janis Strelnieks led Ventspils with 16 points while Aaron Pettway notched 12 in the losing effort. After Ventspils got to within 5 points late in the second quarter, Suput hit a three to spark the Bamberg rout. Up by 12 points at half, the visitors put the game away outscoring Ventspils 12-27 in the third quarter.

Casey Jacobsen drew first blood for Bamberg and Gavel added 2 fouls shots before Strelnieks hit a three for the home side. Karsten Tadda punched back with a triple, but Mareks Jurevicus matched him from long range. Ventspils went on a 6-1 spurt till Karsten hit again from beyond the three-point arc, 12-13. Pettway maneuvered inside for a 2-plus-1 to retake the lead for Ventspils, but Suput scored 6 points in a 0-11 run by Bamberg to put his team ahead by 8 points. Robert Garrett scored a field goal to push the Bamberg advantage to 20-28 after 10 minutes. Ventspils opened the second period with a 6-0 run as it turned up the defense and held Bamberg scoreless till Elton Brown finally got a layup to fall. Suput followed with a bucket inside, and Garrett drained a three to give the visitors a double-digit margin at 26-36. Ventspils clawed its way back to get to within 5 points as it went 7-of-8 as a team from the foul line only to see Suput and Brian Roberts hit back-to-back threes to send Bamberg into the locker room up 33-45.

Suput opened the second half with three-pointer. Moments later Jacobsen connected from beyond the three-point arc, but Pettway countered with a layup plus the additional foul shot. Suput, fully in the zone, scored again, and Roberts added a layup to push the lead out to 17. Strelnieks managed to cut in for a layup, but a field goal by Tibor Pleiss put Bamberg up 42-61. Scott tried to get Ventspils to respond by working in for 2 points, but the visitors kept pulling away and broke the 20-point barrier on a field goal by Roberts. Gavel added a triple, Tadda followed with a two-pointer, and Beckham Wyrick drilled a three to put the game definitely out of reach. Bamberg went into the final period up 45-75. After a slow start to the fourth for both teams, Lauris Blaus scored six points in an 8-2 burst by Ventspils. Bamberg called for time, and Brown responded with a layup. Strelnieks made a three, but Brown hit again from inside. Arturs Berzins cut the difference with a pair of layups as Ventspils managed to get the final score down to 62-85.

Head Coaches

GALVANOVSKIS, AGRIS
BK Ventspils
"I think that the majority of players wasn't ready for today's game. Maybe they wanted to make throws instead of passing the ball, in any case, this was a situation where our team showed lack of defense, also many mistakes were made. There was a surprise upper hand from the German team with new players that we did not expect. The only player that pulled his weight today was Janis Strelnieks, the second maybe was Aaron Pettway. Our new player Blaus also needed some time to get in the game, but showed quite good results."
FLEMING, CHRIS
Brose Baskets
"The Ventspils team are good players and are very well coached, but our team is still more experienced, and some moments under the basket gave us a good advantage. The defense of Ventspils in the first half was very good, but the game was set for us in the third quarter, where our defense gave us the upper hand and made it possible to win the game."

Players

STRELNIEKS, JANIS
BK Ventspils
"Our main faults were in the one-on-one moments, where our defense has shown some flaws. The team lacked in passes, everyone probably tried to score points. This caused some confusion."
PLEISS, TIBOR
Brose Baskets
"Our team gave 100 percent from the first minute of the game. Our advantage was that we've taken the lead and managed to keep the point difference during the whole game. Both teams are young and equally good, but we still won in the end."
