THE TAKE

Two teams looking to upgrade their position ahead of the Top 16 Draw meet on Thursday at the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain, when Unicaja hosts Efes Pilsen. Despite losing last week to slip to 9-4, Unicaja still has an outside shot to finish second in the group and potentially to become a top seed for the draw. Meanwhile Efes is out to overtake Unicaja for third place, which potentially could result in being in the second seeding level for the draw. Of course the final seeding positions are dependant upon results from other groups. When these teams last met, Efes cruised past Unicaja 91-75 in December in Istanbul as Drew Nicholas led six Efes scorers in double figures with 16 points and 7 assists. Both teams have hit some rough patches since then and are looking to finish the regular season with a sweet taste and a win. Unicaja has lost two of its last three games, although head coach Sergio Scariolo’s side is perfect at home this season. Efes is coming off a surprising home loss to Aris TT Bank, but is 3-3 on the road this season. Both teams possess remarkable depth and enjoy playing uptempo basketball, but will also be in an unfamiliar situation as they are facing opposition with a backcourt as deep as their own. With the likes of Carlos Cabezas, Davor Kus, Jiri Welsch, Berni Rodriguez, Bojan Popovic and Melvin Sanders sharing minutes for Unicaja, while Nicholas, Scoonie Penn, Rashad Wright and Ender Arslan make up the backcourt and Kenny Gregory and Mustafa Abi platoon at small forward. The seemingly unlimited options from the perimeter increase the roles of the coaches in this one, something not uncommon in two of today’s best tacticians, Scariolo and Efes’s David Blatt. The battle inside is also big, with Loren Woods and Andre Hutson leading the charge for Efes and Daniel Santiago and Marcus Hailsip there for Unicaja. With both teams playing for something and two master coaches boasting deep and talented rosters, this game has all the makings of a thriller, that could go down to the wire. In a game between two teams that match up so well, the advantage could go to the hosts, as Unicaja has now won 14 consecutive Euroleague games in Malaga.

Quotes Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We want to end en excellent regular season for us with a good game at home. We are facing a game against a quality team, with a deep roster and many experienced and talented players. They are an organized squad and defeated us clearly in Istanbul. They have also recovered their star, Drew Nicholas, so we will have to look for solutions other than our usual one, which is Berni Rodriguez. We have an added difficulty that we will have to solve with a well-structured team defense and most of all, smart offense against their zone defense."
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
"Looking forward to a good and game against a very good team like Unicaja Malaga. They have been undefeated this year in the Euroleague at home and play their best basketball there. We have been a good team on the road that’s far. We need more competing well every game away. And surely against the strong Malaga team we have to play a top-level game to give ourselves a chance to win."

Players

GABRIEL, GERMAN
Unicaja
"It is very important for us to win this game, mainly to end as high as possible in our group and have a good position to face the Top 16 draw next week. If we win this game we could avoid unpleasant rivals in the Top 16, that's why this game is so important for us. We are always a competitive team in Malaga and the fans make us stronger making Martin Carpena a tough place to play for our rivals. With Berni being sidelines we have lost a key piece in our team and we all have to step up to fill in for him."
HUTSON, ANDRE
Efes Pilsen
"It's going to be one of the hardest games on the road this season so far. We are trying to get a better position in the group and that can only be the third place on the standings. We lost couple of games, which we could win, especially at home. That’s what made this Unicaja game a little bit too dramatic for us. Whatever happens at the end, we will try to win for sure, with all our aim."
Marcus Haislip - Unicaja Unicaja wrapped up third place and a second-level seed for Monday’s Top 16 Draw with an 87-77 win over Efes Pilsen on Thursday at the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain. With the victory, Unicaja finishes the regular season with 10-4 record, the best among the third placed teams in the competition. Meanwhile Efes slipped to 8-6, but finished the season in fourth place and will be a level three seed at the draw. The victory was Unicaja’s 15 consecutive Euroleague home win. Marcus Haislip led Unicaja with a season-high 23 points, Carlos Cabezas added 14 and Boniface NDong had 11. Andre Hutson paced Efes with 17 points, Ermal Kuqo and Kerem Gonlum scored 13 apiece and Kenny Gregory had 10. Efes started strong and Hutson helped the visitors finish the first quarter up 22-24. However the hosts found the answers for Efes’s defense by the second period, outscoring its opponents 32-14 to take control for good. The lead reached 20 early in the fourth quarter and Unicaja coasted the rest of the way. Efes managed to get within 10 late in the game, but Cabezas took charge to ensure the hosts of victory.

Loren dunked on the first attack off a nice assist from Scoonie Penn, but a Daniel Santiago layup gave the first sign of a real good challenge. Carlos Jimenez’s 3 free throws gave the hosts a 7-4 edge only for Gonlum and Kuqo to balance the game for Efes. Haislip pushed the home side forward, eventually pushing his team out to 18-16 with a layup. Efes was trying to surprise Unicaja with the different styles of defense, turning from match-up zone suddenly to man-to-man, but the home team stayed strong inside. Four points from Hutson gave Efes an 18-22 advantage, but Jiri Welsch and Cabezas points ended the first quarter at 22-24

Kerem Gonlum - Efes Pilsen Haislip scored 9 points just in the first 191 seconds of the second period, including a three-pointer, to give Unicaja a 31-27 lead. The Unicaja defense also was getting stronger, while Efes started to make mistakes on offence. Bojan Popovic and Davor Kus joined the game to better the hosts’ offensive production with good organization. Meanwhile foul problems sidelined Kuqo and Efes’s defensive problems were getting bigger. A Kus triple, followed by a NDong layup, made it 41-29 as the host took control. Drew Nicholas and Gregory hit three-pointers showed signs of life from the visitors, but Unicaja still strengthened the lead until the end of the first half. Melvin Sanders’s three pointer made it 51-38 and then German Gabriel hit another from downtown to end the first half with a comfortable lead for Unicaja, 54-38.

Unicaja increased its lead to 20 points early in the third period. Cabezas stole the ball from Penn for a layup and made another one in the same minute to extend the lead to 60-40. Then Efes had 0-7 spurt in the next three minutes to cut the lead to 13 with a Kuqo layup. Hutson made it 61-49 as Efes started using zone pressure and tried to stop Unicaja from scoring more. But small mistakes in offence kept Efes from coming closer. A Kus layup ended the third quarter at 67-53 for Unicaja.

Kus opened the score in the last period to extend the Unicaja lead to 16 points again. The visitors tried hard to get back in the game, but Unicaja used its advantage very well. Gregory got Efes within 75-63, but Gabriel and Cabezas worked well to keep Unicaja in charge. A Gonlum layup made it 77-65, but Cabezas penetrated inside. The Gonlum-Cabezas duel kept going, but it didn’t allow Efes to get any closer. Gonlum had a layup-plus-foul to get Efes to 83-73, but Unicaja stayed resistant on defense the rest of the way to seal the win.

"I am finding my rhythm. I played 15 minutes tonight and felt good, but I still need to improve. This is a very important win for us, because we finished the regular season at a good level and we hope to do also well from now on."
CABEZAS, CARLOS
Unicaja
"We could not finish second in this group or become a top-seeded team, but we played a good game tonight, showing that we can compete with any team. We have to wait for the Top 16 Draw and our goal is to repeat what we did last season: go to the Final Four."
