THE TAKE

A last fight to make it to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague regular season begins in France, as Le Mans Sarthe Basket hosts BC Khimki Moscow region in Game 1 of the final two-way Qualifying Round series on Tuesday. The winners of this series will seal its ticket to the Euroleague regular season and the loser will play the 2010-11 Eurocup. Khimki is the only undefeated team in the 2010-11 Qualifying Rounds - and the only one that swept its Round 2 series last week. Le Mans has registered consecutive double-digits wins in its two Qualifying Rounds home games against Banvit and Asvel. Khimki will have to be ready to stop Antoine Diot, in great shape recently. Diot has stepped up in crunch time, using his size and talent to make the difference. He is set to share the point guard duties with pass-first playmaker Marc-Antoine Pellin - even when both players may share playing time on court. Diot faces a tall point guard like Zoran Planinic, who likes to take his opponents to the low post. Planinic also offers deep range and know-how. His backup will be Raul Lopez, always offering ball circulation, court sense and unlimited range. Le Mans needs to stop Keith Langford to have chances to advance. Langford has been Khimki's leader so far, scoring in many ways with great determination. Khimki has more options at both wings with three-point threat Thomas Kelati, slasher Vitaliy Fridzon or versatile forward Sergey Monya. Alex Acker seems the right player to guard Langford due to his experience and athleticism. Ben Dewar and Charles Kahudi will share playing time at both wings. Dewar offer explosiveness and deep range while Kahud is a tremendous athlete ready to put Kelati or Monya into trouble. JP Batista leads Le Mans' frontcourt with his post skills and mid-range shots. Le Mans has other options around the baskets such as blue-collar center Ryvon Covile, rebounding ace Thierry Rupert or physical big man Alain Koffi, who has played with great consistency so far. Batista faces an interesting matchup against Kreso Loncar, who has been unstoppable lately despite seeing limited playing time. Aleksey Savrasenko may see extended playing time if Benjamin Eze - who missed last Friday's game - is still sidelined with an injury. Fedor Dmiriev can break any game with his long jumpers and mobility. Expect nothing but an intense, interesting game at Antares on Tuesday.

Thomas Kelati - BC Khimki (photo bckhimki.ru)BC Khimki Moscow Region is a step closer to a spot in the 2010-11 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season after besting Le Mans 56-70 in France on Tuesday. The series switches to Russia on Friday where Khimki can affors to lose by as much as 13 and still reach the Euroleague for the second season in a row. Keith Langford and Thomas Kelati scored 19 points apiece Tuesday to lift Khimki. Le Mans scored the opening basket, tied the score at 18-18 early in the second quarter and trailed by just 2 at halftime, but the Khimki defense held the hosts to just 8 third-quarter points as the visitors marched to victory. Zoran Planinic added 14 for the winners. Charles Kahudi, Antoine Diot and Alain Koffi paced Le Mans with 10 points each.

Kahudi broke the ice for the home team, but Khimki was waiting to pounce as Planinic and Langford sandwiched baskets around a Sergey Monya three to make it 2-7. J.P. Batista scored inside to narrow the Le Mans’s deficit to a single point, but again Khimki answered, this time with threes from Planinic and Kelati to go ahead 10-16. Marc-Antoine Pellin set up Ryvon Covile for a slam that narrowed the gap to 12-16 after 10 minutes. Diot was sharp early in the second quarter, tying the game at 18-18 with a three-pointer. Vadim Panin answered back from downtown and Planinic scored too, but Le Mans stayed close thanks to Kahudi. Another Kelati three stretched the lead to 22-28 before Batista and Koffi – both from the line – carried Le Mans back within 2. Planinic and Covile swapped a free throw each to make it 30-32 at the break.

Planinic went to work at the start of the second half by rebounding his own missed shot and turning it into a basket-plus-foul. Triples from Langford and Kelati put the visitors ahead 34-43. Kelati added another basket and a three to stretch the Khimki lead to 15 points, silencing the Le Mans faithful. Baskets by Covile and Thierry Rupert only minimized the damage at 38-49 at the end of the third quarter. Free throws and then a basket from Langford followed by an Aleksey Savrasenko bucket in the paint took the Khimki lead to 17. Rupert scored Le Mans’s first points of the quarter after nearly three minutes and then Ben Dewar followed with a jumper. However Langford bettered him with a triple to ensure a comfortable cushion for Khimki. Diot ignited a late Le Mans charge that cut the deficit from 16 to 11, but baskets from Langford and Planinic kept the hosts from getting within single digits. Langford and Ben Eze finally sealed a 14-point victory in the closing minute that makes Khimki a favorite to return to the Euroleague this season.

Head Coaches

JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans Sarthe
"Khimki managed to physically dominate us in the second half. We didn’t have the patience and teamwork to keep the ball moving and punish their aggressive defense. Eventually we started playing with quality, but the difference was made. In Moscow we will need to play with more rhythm and quality if we want to have any chance to qualify."
SCARIOLO, SERGIO
BC Khimki
"We are just at the halfway point of the series. We have to correct some mistakes for Friday. At times we lost focus, but in the third quarter we were pretty good, especially on defense. We could have finished better, but we made mistakes, we relaxed, we thought the game was won. We have still a lot of work to do. Today the case is different compared to the other games. The score is much closer."
