THE TAKE

Air Avellino will look to continue its momentum from its first-ever Euroleague victory last week when it hosts Le Mans Sarthe Basket of France on Thursday. Avellino edged Unicaja 72-70 on a last-second Eric Williams basket to improve to 1-2 in Group A. Chris Warren recorded 24 points and 9 rebounds to carry Avellino. Meanwhile Le Mans suffered a heart-breaking 82-80 overtime loss in Tel Aviv. David Bluthenthal was on fire with 23 points from 5-for-8 three-point shooting and Brian Chase played a big role late with 14 points and 5 assists. Le Mans will target what would be a crucial road win in Italy a stretch of four games at home in its next five contests. On paper these teams match up remarkably well, with almost identical numbers in all the major team statistical categories. One major difference between them is where the scoring comes from. Warren is Avellino’s top gun with 20.7 points per game – the second most in the Euroleague this season and more than double Avellino’s next top scorer, Travis Best. Le Mans has three dangerous scorers with Bluthenthal. Chase and J.P. Batista all averaging between 12 and 16 points per game. The key duel in the game seems to be at small forward, where Warren and Bluthenthal will go head to head. However much of Le Mans’s hopes could rest on the shoulders of young swingman Antoine Diot, who may be needed for his defensive toughness against Warren. In the backcourt, Best will team with Drake Diener and reserve playmaker Antonio Porta to help generate more scoring for the hosts. Le Mans counters with Chase, Diot and Dee Spencer, who has yet to shine this year, but cannot be ignored after he averaged the second most points in the Euroleague regular season last year (18.1 ppg.). In the paint, Avellino is led by Williams and Andrea Crosariol in the paint, with forwards Marko Tusek, Tamar Slay and Nikola Radulovic giving head coach Zare Markovski many different options on the frontline. Le Mans will need its versatile big men, Pape Badiane, Alain Koffi, Batista and Maleye Ndoye to stand tall on both ends of the floor. The game could be a turning point for both teams, as a win for the hosts would make them 2-2 and give them hope of reaching the Top 16, while for Le Mans, it would be a first win that creates momentum going ahead. All eyes will be on Warren and Bluthenthal to lead their teams, but there are many others that could also step up and make the difference in this interesting and important showdown.

Quotes Head Coaches

MARKOVSKI, ZARE
Air Avellino
"Having won last week against Unicaja Malaga, we would like to add another victory to our ranking. I can’t say it will be an easier game than Malaga, because Le Mans has a good roster and it is a very important game for both teams. A victory will give us a fighting chance for a spot in the Top 16. As I said last week, we have to be aggressive on defense and we should play an easy basketball. Only in this way Air Avellino can keep on dreaming."
JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"The last two games have been really frustrating for us. We had the last possessions for the win both games and could not make the winning shot. Hopefully we can continue to play well and find a way to win at money time. Avellino is a talented team but also a team we need to beat if we want to stay in the race. It will be hard but we believe we can do it."

Players

RADULOVIC, NIKOLA
Air Avellino
"It’s a very tough game for both teams. The group is balanced, Le Mans has lost three games in the Euroleague, but in my opinion it could still get the fourth place. But we are a good team and we hope to get the second victory in a row. I’m not afraid of challenging Le Mans, because we have showed we can compete against team stronger than us, like Olympiacos, Maccabi and Malaga. We are improving day after day and our goal is to advance to the Top 16."
KOFFI, ALAIN
Le Mans
"No need to repeat that our first victory is awaited this week in order to stay in the race for the Top 16. We had the win in our hands in Tel Aviv last week but we failed in the end. We can't do the same in Avelllino. Do our best, stay in the game and be more efficient at the end of the game!"
Eric Williams - Air AvellinoAir Avellino registered its second consecutive win in Group A by downing Le Mans 78-73 at home on Thursday night. Avellino won its second consecutive game to improve to 2-2 in the Group A standings, joining Unicaja and Maccabi Electra in a three-way tie for third place. Meanwhile, Le Mans went down to 0-4 and needs to start winning right away to keep its Top 16 options alive. Eric Williams led the winners with 16 points on 5-for-6 two-pointers and 8 rebounds. Chris Warren added 13 points, Tamar Slay added 11 - all in the second half - while Daniele Cinciarini got 10 for Avellino. Dewarick Spencer led Le Mans with 26 points. Joao Batista added 12 while Brian Chase got 10 for the guests, that led 18-19 after 10 minutes. Cinciarini and Drake Diener stepped up late in the first half to give Avellino a 40-35 edge at the break. Slay had 9 points in the third quarter to keep the hosts ahead, 63-57, after 30 minutes. Travis Best became Avellino's go-to guy to lead the hosts to a well-deserved win, as Le Mans only rallied once the outcome was clear.

Spencer got Le Mans going with consecutive baskets for a 0-4 lead. Best fed Williams for a power layup but Alain Koffi took over with a turnaround jumper that kept the guests ahead, 2-6. Williams scored again but Batista answered with a jumper that touched the rim, went up and fell down. Avellino kept running its offense through Williams, who followed Marko Tusek's triple with a dunk for a 10-10 tie. Spencer stayed unstoppable with another layup that Warren matched with a fast break basket - and the free throw that came with it for a 14-12 edge. Le Mans kept attacking the basket and Maleye Ndoye sank free throws, but Warren simply took over with an outstanding dunk in traffic. Badiane made a free throw that David Bluthenthal followed with a put-back layup to put the guests back ahead, 16-17. Another big basket by Warren and free throws by Antoine Diot fixed the score at 18-19 after 10 minutes.

Dewarick Spencer - Le MansNikola Radulovic took over with a three-point play right at the start of the second quarter but Chase answered from downtown for a 21-22 Le Mans edge. Radulovic scored again while Cinciarini sank a triple to provide another lead change, 26-22. Spencer sank a catch-and-shoot three-pointer off a timeout but free throws by Warren kept Avellino ahead, 28-25. Batista found space for an easy layup that Cinciarini matched with a huge jumper. Batista insisted with an incredible turnaround jumper but Tusek answered with a follow-up layup. Avellino had improved its defense, while Diener scored for a 34-29 edge. Cinciarini made free throws but Badiane nailed a turnaround jumper for a 36-31 Le Mans deficit. Diener and Ndoye traded free throws while Chase sank a five-meter jumper to get Le Mans within 38-35. Best scored in penetration to restore a 40-35 Avellino edge at halftime.

Koffi dunked it immediately after the break that Slay matched with a big basket. Batista stayed on fire with another layup but Slay answered with an outstanding driving basket. Chase sank free throws while Spencer buried a jumper but a red hot Slay answered from downtown for a 49-43 Avellino lead. Spencer and Bluthenthal took over with consecutive triples to tie it at 49-49, in an outstanding run-and-gun show. Diener joined the three-point shootout while Koffi beat the shot clock buzzer with a layup, making Avellino call timeout at 52-51. The hosts improved their defense while Warren and Williams made free throws. Batista scored around the basket but Slay - who else? - answered with a layup. Ndoye sank a four-meter shot but Williams kept fighting in the paint - but missing free throws, too. Chase rescued its team with a layup that Cinciarini bettered with a three-point play for a 63-57 Avellino edge after 30 minutes.

Williams got the crowd involved with a dunk early in the fourth quarter while Slay also slammed it for a steal to make it a double-digit game, 67-57. Chase tried to ignit the guests' comeback with a three-pointer while Spencer added free throws for a 67-62 Le Mans deficit. Best struck from downtown off a screen and soon added a four-meter jumper to restore a 72-62 Avellino margin. Bluthenthal sank a wide open triple but Avellino called timeout to readjust its defense. Le Mans stopped finding easy shots while Best scored again for a 74-65 Avellino lead with 4 minutes remaining. Time was running out for Le Mans and the guests kept struggling to find the way to the basket. Best fed Williams for an easy basket and Warren added a put-back layup that sealed the outcome, 78-65, with 2 minutes to go, allowing all Avellino fans to celebrate yet another Euroleague win!

Head Coaches

MARKOVSKI, ZARE
Air Avellino
“I’m very happy because we won a difficult game against a good team. We had an excellent approach and we were able to lead this game for all 40 minutes. In my opinion we deserved to win. Now we can get a week’s rest and after we can think about the next game in Cibona. Best was wonderful during the last minutes, but Cinciarini played a good game too."
JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
“We have lost only by 5 points. This is the only good news for us. Avellino could kill the game in such situations, but we resisted and recovered and that’s good. Offensively we didn’t play well, actually we missed different open shots. While Avellino played hard and for us it has been a very difficult game."

Players

BEST, TRAVIS
Air Avellino
"We have to play together to get these wins. We have been playing well, practicing hard, and we are a really good team, with a deep bench. I think coach did the right thing by not starting me in the second half, because I have been battling injuries. I had enough energy to come back in the fourth quarter and attack a little bit. It worked out. We definitely have an option to get to the next round. This win at home is very important one, because we had two tough losses early on. We found different ways of winning even though we are still trying to learn what kind of team we are. We have a really good chance to go further."
SPENCER, DEWARICK
Le Mans
"It was a very tough game for us. Le Mans just didn’t play good enough to win the game. We had to win to keep on going, but we lost. Now we should hope to win the next game and try to get to the Top 16."
