Paf Bologna suffered its first defeat in the Euroleague against Peristeri after an excellent second half by the Greeks, who employed better tactics. The Italian squad, which tried to stop the home players with a 2-3 zone defence, was unable to stop the Greeks. Peristeri led by 7 (33-26) in minute 13, but seven straight mistakes (Papadatos 2, Papamakarios 2, Dinkins 2 and Ford 1) gave Paf the chance to get within 2 points (41-39). In the beginning of the second half, Alfonso Ford totally destroyed the zone defence of Bologna with 11 points in a row and Peristeri took a 10 point advantage (59-49) in minute 28. But in the next two minutes the players of Peristeri repeated a series of mistakes, just as they had in the first half, and Paf ended the third quarter (59-59) after a 0-10 run. At the beginning of the last quarter, Ford scored 6 and Peristeri took the lead and never lost it again. In the last two minutes, the team from Bologna tried to change the score through repeated fouling, but the home team kept its cool and didn?t miss the free throws. A three-pointer at the buzzer by Pelakanos was the final stroke that made it clear which was the better team on the court tonight.
